A family of Pink-eared Ducks took advantage of the lovely and quiet morning to practice vortexing with their only remaining offspring. These ducks often feed by creating a water vortex to concentrate plankton.

Il faisait -26 au petit matin sur les berges du St-Laurent. Avec les bourrasques de vent à 40 km/h, le service de météo parle d'une sensation de -40. Le fleuve était à peine visible tant il était enveloppé de brumes. Mon déclencheur à distance a rapidement cessé de fonctionner. Au bout de trois-quarts d'heure, malgré les chauffe-mains dans mes gants et mes bottes Sorel, je ne sentais presque plus mes extrémités. C'est mon cinquantième hiver québécois, mais jamais je n'ai connu de froid aussi intense que ce matin.

I can see no other way of bridging this gulf than expressing publicly our opinion.

Ce titre est un jeu de mots sur « Vernon Subitex », personnage qui donne son nom à la trilogie romanesque de Virginie Despentes. Un vortex est « une masse de quelque chose, en particulier de l'air ou un liquide, qui tourne très rapidement et attire la matière vers son centre ».

The title is a pun on “Vernon Subitex”, the character who lends his name to Virginie Despentes' novel trilogy. A vortex is "a mass of something, especially air or liquid, that spins very quickly and pulls matter towards its centre".

Along the cliff edge is a natural vortex feature filled with water from recent rains. It is like an eye looking towards the heavens.
A vortex feature is formed as wind blows up and over the edge of the cliff face causing a vortex to emerge in the air. Sand particles get caught up in the vortex, slowly eroding a depression in the rock which grows ever deeper.
I entered this photo in a photography show and a local poet, Barbara J. Funke, wrote a poem. Thank you, Barbara! The title and poem follows:
Desert Look Out

Blind sentry,
what news?
You are silent.
What ferocious wind
augured these deep
cycloptic layers of sand
that shadow the margins
down to your hollowed eye?
Your reservoir of green tears seems envious of all-seeing sky,
its blue and white-swirled
depths of light.
Without vision or insight,
your emerald iris can express
only what the sky says:
