This image is a cross section down the center of a smoke ring vortex. Created using a focused light slit to section the ring.
Plasma vortex or one of the insane spectacles in "The House on the Rock"?
This was a 15 second exposure, 100 ISO, and f/16. I wish I had some science for why I chose those settings, but it was pretty much a gut feeling and it worked on the first try. I think I'm getting a better feel for the math of photography. And yes, we had to stand very still.
A new joint operation - called Operation Vortex - has gotten underway today (Wednesday 19 January 2022) in Oldham to crack down on vehicle crime and traffic offences in the district.
The Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit, along with officers from GMP's Safer Transport Team and officers across the Oldham District, worked along the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency at a static base in Chadderton, stopping a number of vehicles either committing traffic offences, or vehicle crime.
Two men arrested, one on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs, and one for driving while disqualified and remain in custody for questioning, ten vehicles have been seized for being driven with no insurance, and one stolen vehicle has been recovered.
In addition, officers also reported 35 traffic offences for a range of driving offences.
Chief Superintendent Mark Dexter from GMP's Specialist Operations said: "This will become a regular operation across Greater Manchester, where we will strive to make our communities and roads safer, tackling illegal vehicles which we know that are all too often used in crime and cause harm and misery on the roads.
"I hope this sends a strong message to anyone thinking of breaking the law on our roads, that we are watching, and we won't hesitate to take action to remove you and your vehicle from the road."
You should call 101, the national non-emergency number, to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response.
Always call 999 in an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, violence is being used or threatened or where there is danger to life.
You can also call anonymously with information about crime to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity who will not want your name, just your information. Your call will not be traced or recorded and you do not have to go to court or give a statement.

Soooo, I had to go pickup some dog food for Luca today and realized that with school starting, I hadn't gone light painting in far too long.
This drain just so happens to be right beside that Petsmart and I knew what I had to do.
One of my first popular shots was in this drain and I had been waiting to get back down there and use my wonderful fisheye lens there.
For this shot I set my f/stop to 5.6 for the blue glow stick to do the little vortex's and then stopped it all the way to f/16 for the steel wool.
This is a sterogrphic projection from my recent upload but its the opposite way (sky in).
Thought it looked pretty groovy :) Name was inspired by Mickfellwalker1 :D

Vortex during May 2006 flood. Looks great on largest size. The water was trying to rush through the culvert under the road. The result was this wicked vortex...it made a creepy sound.
Vortex Island (Antartica, Prince Gustav Channel) sits surrounded by ice and cloud, waiting for sun to awaken it once more... we were supposed to visit the island this day, but it remained solidly locked behind a wall of ice.
A wall hanging piece that has both presence and dynamism. Multiple tapered and hammer beaten bars have been folded around the eye.

I've been caught in this photo editing vortex. Adobe has just released Lightroom 4 and also CS6 beta. I've been fool enough to fall into their trap and try the free trials and downloads. All of this happening about the same time Sassy and I spent a weekend with my old friend Milo and his wife Pam in Leavenworth Washington. There we took lots of pictures for sure. What a beautiful area. Then last weekend I spent Saturday morning with my oldest son driving around looking for photo ops. Seemed like more driving around than getting out and shooting. Sure loved the company though. Bless his heart he had been up since 4 AM that morning to take his wife Anna to the airport and was really struggling to stay awake. So I had plenty of new images to work on in editing and plenty of new editing software to learn and put to work. I'm excited about Photoshop CS6. Some of the features really look worth spending the money on for the upgrade. The free beta CS6 that I downloaded had some very coveted features that I couldn't get to work. Well after much time invested in trying to figure out why, I finally figured out that I need to upgrade my video/graphics card. My new video card should be delivered to my door tomorrow. Love Amazon.com online shopping. It was Adobe that made me invest in a new computer last time they came out with something new. I'll be pleased if I can get by with a new video card this time.
This is a shot taken last weekend with my son when we were driving by Commencement Bay in Tacoma. Seven bracketed shots ran through photomatix. Still doing much of my editing in CS4. I've got so many actions and plug-ins that I need to work into CS6 that I haven't had time to do yet. And most of all let's not forget I need to spend time with Sassy too. :)
Happy Hump Day!!!
Just playing around with camera and lights... Have a wonderful day ahead.....

The polar vortex is here. I never really knew what that meant before but its here and its cold. In the arctic, right now, at Arctic Bay, which is 2,153 miles due north of me, the temp is -27F so this arctic air warmed up by 11 degrees before hitting our doorstep. Our current temp is -16F and the wind chill is -41F.
Im about ready to leave for work but Im sitting here procrastinating in a big way. The building I live in is making all sorts of BIG creeking sounds. Never heard before but I suppose its just due to the cold. My car is parked in the lower level garage so I don't anticipate any problems with it starting. I park in the garage at work so I pretty much don't have to deal with the wind chill temps out there at all. Thank goodness.
The shot above is in Geneva, Illinois along the Fox River and taken just before Christmas but its the coldest looking shot I have in my archives at the moment. Stay warm out there if you have to go out.
Happy Polar Vortex Monday :-)
