A Canadian Pacific WB manifest train at the onset of the "Polar Vortex" at Roselle, IL on January 5, 2014. I booked out of the house with only a fleece jacket waiting for this train, while fighting off a very bad cold that was starting. I probably have never been as cold photographing trains. Litterally shivering and trying to keep warm and dry in the blowing snow and wind.

The Vortex Estina is a very rare sight in Western Europe. It was built in Russia by TagAZ from 2008 until 2012. It's a badge engineered version of the Chery A5. The Vortex brand was stopped in 2013.

A spiraling arrangement of fern fronds in Northern California redwood forest.

We did not get back to the Redwood National and State Parks this past year — the time we would have gone coincided with that period when we were all locking down in response to the pandemic. In retrospect, it was perhaps starting to look like camping might have worked, but things were still in too much of a state of flux at that point. So this photograph comes from the previous season, back in June of 2019.

Late in the day we decided to head to a spot where I knew from experience the tit might be possible to find rhododendron blossoms growing among the redwood trees, a place where the normally dark forest tends to pick up a bit more light from the west in the late afternoon. We wandered a trail and eventually descended into an area full of ferns. Here I turned my attention away from the huge trees and looked downwards to find compositions among the ferns.

This is dedicated to all those crazy cameratoss folks, because no one can toss just once...

Over the weekend I took a break from college and went up to my friends cabin up on Mormon Lake, AZ. I wasn't really planning on taking any photos because the moon was out.

I just left my camera out to capture some star trails. The original photos were really lame however with all the compositing through LR>After Effects>Starstax>After Effects, it turned out very interesting.

Obviously the foreground is silly however the stars warping around the north star make for a trippy image.

I've been trying to get this right for a few years, but never obtained the result I was looking for. Road flares, grinders, torches, candles, and a handful of flammable accelerants ... fun, but not quite right.

Last night ... Ba-ZAM! We made a some mistakes, learned a few tricks, adjusted a some settings, suffered a few injuries (ouch) ... and ended up with exciting results.

Stay tuned for more.

Adjective 101: Complicated

Back to the Vortex. Big waves last night and had to get out of there after getting pretty wet. A little scary but great view.

The Vortex in Lower Antelope Canyon near Page Arizona.

This formation is found about half-way through the canyon, to your right as you walk in. The best place to photograph this area appears to me to be accessed by getting yourself as far back as possible on the left-hand side of the canyon (your left as you when moving forward through the canyon) and setting up in a small recess (you can tell where others have set up here before), where you can take in the maximal amount of the dominant flowing formation on the right and top of this composition.

One of the fine trees that line the beautiful Helford river. The spiral shape really appealed.

I have been building transformers lego models for two decades now, constantly growing my collection, there were always one thing left do figure out.

How to build a combiner ?

We all know the limitations through weight on our models versus what we would want from certain bricks and their clutchpowers.

Bruticus and the combaticons were on my wishlist for a long time, so i have been working on those models over the past months, first working out each individual character and then the combine mode.

It needs still a support stand, which also serves as display stand, just to keep the weight up, he is very heavy, standing tall around 60cm.

Instructions available soon.

This is taken above a busy car park in Hong Kong's famous harbour city. The non-stop traffic flow creates a vortex of lights, color and urban living.

I managed to guess the celestial pole (the center of the spin) from one the previous shots at this same location here. It was a bit of a wild guess.

Kane has some awesome tips on finding the pole here. Also while you are there, check out his star trail shots, some of them are amazing.

Amazingly, the design of my Vortex motorcycle came together very quickly and with very few revisions! In fact, the only major change to the structure was early on when I decided to flip the front assembly upside-down so that the gas tank would have a stud on top instead of a cavity shape. This also allowed the exhaust/kickstand to be attached underneath.

These are just some WIP images of some minor things that I tried to add to the bikes, but ultimately did not end up using on the final versions.

1 - This was the first time i added a front "fairing" piece to the bike. It is some oddly-shaped mini-fig helmet visor. It was incredibly hard to mount in that location because it kept breaking. i later discovered that it fits better when flipped around. This first version shows the visor piece pinched upright in a more angular sort of way. It looked good, but was not strong enough to consider a reasonable connection. Flipping the visor over later allowed for a more visible "air scoop" behind the front wheel.

2 - Obviously I could not find a way to connect it, but I feel like a clear cheese plate would've made a great addition for a front windscreen. This really made the bike look like it was from the eighties!

3 - Another experimental headlight using a gem piece. It was just comically large so I tossed the idea away. I also tried mounting a tooth/fang piece in the front clip to make a front fender, but it looked kinda overly futuristic and ugly in my opinion.

4 - Simply used 1x1 plates with holes in them for wheels. These actually looked amazing in my opinion. i only decided not to use them becasue I already was using yellow wheels on the red bike and I wanted to have a bit more variety. Sadly I do not have these plates in any other color. I preferred the red bike to use technic bushings for wheels so they did not end up there either.
