This is a shot I took on a recent trip to a local carnival with my friend Ian RZ68. If you have not seen his shot of the Viper, make sure to check it out. It is pretty insane!

I don't think it is possible for him and I to drive by a carnival without stopping. I guess we are suckers for all of the lights. Although we arrived just about closing time, we were able to get in some good shots. I like how they strategically placed the trash can at the exit. I guess some people could not handle the spinning madness.

Following on from Mike's post Nine Ladies And A Black Santa this is the creator of a new board game entitled "Vortex Chess"

Totally random!

this picture sort of goes with the last two, but this one is by far my favorite of the bunch. not sure if this is my favorite picture I have ever taken, but it certainly is my favorite I have taken for a long time.

This was taken late last year when I was at Little Yosemite in one evening. I had this waterfalls all to myself as it was getting late. I was the last one out of the park. It got pretty spooky too when critters started to make noise all over the place.

Someone drew a character of that polar vortex and I wanted in

Vortex was a steel roller coaster at Kings Island in Ohio. It opened on April 11, 1987.

Vortex debuted as the tallest, full-circuit roller coaster in the world with a height of 148 feet. It was also the first coaster to feature six inversions.

Vortex closed permanently on October 27, 2019.

Porque una circumpolar puede ser distinta....

1-9 January 2014. The full-disk images every 3 hours from GOES-WEST capture the sweep of a polar vortex that emerged from the arctic at the beginning of the new year, pushing a blizzard into the northeastern USA on January 3, followed by extensive bitter cold (-20 F, windchill -50 F) around the Great Lakes, and single digit temperatures as far south as Atlanta, Georgia. This western viewpoint displays the persistent flow of arctic air from northern Alaska and Yukon into North America.

Among the string of Christmas light action shots I promised is this Christmas vortex. Oops, there go all the kiddies presents down with the flush. Even the trees are on their way! I hope that you will do experiments while the lights are still up. This is from the other night. It was a good night in Logtown at a couple spots. This Christmas zoom-spin is curious with twilight sky still visible. It's hard to beat lighted figures in the frame but two layers allow me to try.

I scanned my lights directory and found over two hundred files but that is JPG and RAW files; of course, JPGs are not usable. I was looking for the very best of the snaps and immediately found this new one and worked on a fitting title. This take is another shaky spin-zoom that took 1.6 seconds on my tele 70-200 zoom. I wonder what a 3 second exposure would look like? The zoom was started at 200mm and I subsequently pressed the shutter. It's good to grow a metronome (or a loud pocket watch) in your head if you plan extraordinary action!

The zoom increases at the perimeter of the frame and the jiggles are usually interesting most of the time. The jiggles are mostly due to using the long lens without the viewfinder during the exposure. Jiggles are often the best effect when hand holding the exposure. The zoom begets unavoidable as well as intentional jiggles which really add to the action. These are just Christmas lights which usually prove to be the best and most controllable action subjects. I have abandoned trying action on tripod or even monopod views of the Christmas lights. Strap your seat belt on, I am going to post several. Reality is highly overrated.

I just had to jump at another opportunity to try out the tricks before next summer's fireworks and the fair rides. I am still not out of snaps of the other subjects but I hope my breadth has expanded. I did vewwy, vewwy wittle warping and editing this scene except to better fill the frame, for me at least, to present it the way I wanted. I have learned to slow the camera down even further to three seconds but I sometimes boost the lens setting to f:/22 to control glares and flares. Three seconds is about enough to accomplish a wide array of tricks if prepared and prepanned so to speak. Of course this digital experimentation is cheap. I have set the camera to a shutter delay of one second and less and it's a help to practice preparing for the action. I will continue with that. I had fun shooting all of these and they were a breeze to edit! I get mostly muted colors in the ag settings I have shot, so I revel in JUST COLORS.

A Canadian Pacific WB manifest train at the onset of the "Polar Vortex" at Roselle, IL on January 5, 2014. I booked out of the house with only a fleece jacket waiting for this train, while fighting off a very bad cold that was starting. I probably have never been as cold photographing trains. Litterally shivering and trying to keep warm and dry in the blowing snow and wind.

The Vortex Estina is a very rare sight in Western Europe. It was built in Russia by TagAZ from 2008 until 2012. It's a badge engineered version of the Chery A5. The Vortex brand was stopped in 2013.
