Yesterday was such a lovely day so I spent most of it outside with Fara taking photographs and time lapses. It really feels like we have turned a corner and that Spring is almost here, when you are sheltered from the wind, which is still biting! The good weather held out just long enough to create a colourful sunset and fortunately, I was able to find a composition that brought out the best of it. Taken at Portknockie in Morayshire, Scotland.

The day had been spent enjoying the sun on Armadale beach, shell hunting and paddling with the family. A few days before I had enjoyed a grand morning adventure on The Cuillin Ridge and this evening I was given a green light to go and have another bit of fun in The Black Cuillin.

Having an evening to play with, I chose a shorter route and headed round to Loch Slapin to head up Bla Bheinn. To my dismay , the sunshine that we had baked on in Armadale for most of the day had disappeared and as I rounded the corner at Torrin,Bla Bheinn and the surrounding hills were all clagged in – ah well, not to worry, I ‘d still get some exercise , if not any views!

Being only a few weeks after the summer solstice, I had lots of day light ahead of me and I started as slowly as I could, heading up the hill. The reason for my snails pace was the slim hope that the longer I took, the higher the chances the cloud may dissipate from the summits!! Meeting lots of people on their way off the mountain, it didn’t look or sound promising! Wet hair and cloths suggested a thick mist was hanging around the Blue mountain.

I eventually reached the corrie and the cloud was spilling over the bealach to my west and filling the bowl, it was really atmospheric, but not what I was after!! I took a right turn and started to head slowly up Bla Bheinns SE ridge , taking frequent breaks and hugging the top of the cliffs.

Then it started to happen… at about 800m metres I turned around and started to notice the Red Cuillin behind me were now clear of cloud. To add to my excitement, I was now above the clouds that were floating in from the sea and up Loch Slapin, excitement rose and my pace quickened! It just got better and better! As I approached the summit my shadow was cast behind me and my Brocken Spectre followed me to the summit with a crown of Glories! Amazing! Then the crowning glory as I stepped up onto the summit – the whole of the black and Red Cuillin at my feet! The cloud had dropped as had the wind and I spent a good hour in solitude on the fine mountains. An evening I wouldn’t forget in a hurry… Hope you enjoy the video 

End of October and the clocks were going back… Bliss , an extra hour in bed…

However the first significant snows had hit Scotland’s Mountains and the forecast for Sunday was looking rather good…. Bags packed the night before and the alarm was set for 5.30am (well 6.30 body clock time!).

Feeling rather good when woken by the alarm (mainly due to the extra hour factor) I sprung out of bed and set about defrosting the car whilst making some porridge and getting set to go.

-3 degrees and the skies were clear as I headed north on the A9 aiming to meet Gerry at Choire Collie at a leisurely 0830 am. Arriving in unison we discovered out first problem of the day – finding a parking spot!! The place was heaving and it seemed a few cars had been there overnight judging by the frost on the windscreens. Subsequently we met a few people coming back down form the bothy after an adventurous evening.

Winter gear on for the first time this season and we were soon saying our hellos to the Wee Minister and not long after started heading up the slopes of Stob Coire Gaibhre. The snow line was reached and the landscape turned white with the monochrome landscape contrasting the bright blue skies. What a day it was turning out to be. After stopping for a small time on Gaibhre, we were soon heading up the 15th highest mountain in Scotland. The snow was laying a few inches deep and the rime was plastering the boulders. From our viewpoint the Grey Corries lay before us with The Aonachs and Ben Nevis providing a suitable back drop.

The slight breeze that had greeted us on Claurigh was now disappearing and the sun was beating down. I had to delayer and was soon striding along the ridge in my base layer, felt more like the Alps than Scotland! Days like these live long in the memory and we just took our time enjoying the views as we made our way along the ridge. To the south the great mountains of The Mamores, Glencoe and beyond were all instantly recognisable. Eventually we reached our final peak of the day – Stob Coire Easein and decided to leave Choinnich Mor for another day, a great excuse to return!

The day wasn’t over yet though as we still had a fair bit of walking to do. We had managed to park at the parking spots nearer the gate so decided to take the old tram line back to the car.

A nice route although one of the burn cross resulted in me slipping and face planting the rocks – I was thirst anyway so took the opportunity to have a wee drink 

Winter weather windows can be short lived, but can also show off Scotland’s mountains at their best (no better place in the world !). High pressure was visiting, but only for the morning so I set the alarm for 3am. I needn’t have bothered as I was wide awake before 1 am and by the time 2 am came round I decided just to get up and go!

A moonlit night greeted me as I headed off and the frost glistened at the side of the road. Crieff, Comrie, Lochearnhead, Tyndrum all came and went with no sign of life at all. Driving through the night and I pulled up in Glencoe at around 4.15am. I was excited as the weather was cold but it was still and patches of mists had given some variation on the drive , this was going to be good, as long as those mist patches weren’t lingering on any summits!

My initial plan was to head up one of the easier gullies in SCNL, however the avalanche forecast had made me alter my plans, and I decided I wanted to enjoy a sunset from Stob Dubh. Setting off about 4.45 and the moon shone brightly in the sky to the west. I probably didn’t need my head torch but kept it on until the bealach, spotting the hundreds of eyes watching my progress up the hill! The bealach between the two Munros was reached and I stopped here to get the crampons and axe out for the last section. Over The Big Buachaille, a faint band of blue was starting to silhouette Stob Dearg, I had about an hour to get to the top.

The sound of crampons biting frozen snow now accompanied me and on reaching the spot height 902m a grand view welcomed me. Dawn was now eating away at night and the moon was setting over the Bidean Massif and the sweeping ridge up to Stob Dubh was inviting me on. I followed its crest upwards and the views opened up. Mist lay low in the glens and the howling winds that accompanied me on many trips this winter were only a memory. The blue hues were now taken by high cirrus turning pink as I reached the summit. A short distance later I set up the cameras, just in time to watch the sun rise to the north of Schiehallion between Stob Dearg and Stob na Doire. Not a drop of wind as I sat down to enjoyed breakfast with a grand vista, watching the peaks illuminate as the first rays of sun lit the up one by one. After an hour, I pulled myself way from the top and enjoyed a sublime descent, again following the sweeping ridge back to the bealach and eventually back to the waking world….
