This hand drawn sketch is one of a collection of my visual thinking artifacts.

Which, alas, I'm not using much.

Increasingly, I find that I think of my chalk board in terms of multiple layers of information. The center part is me writing a paragraph answering the question at the top, and the right hand side is the framework or rubric that I'm using to write this paragraph. The left (out of sight) is the special schedule for tomorrow), and above it is the date in Mayan, Chinese, and English.

Visual Thinking: visual practices by Claudio

To explain what are the different visual techniques used by a visual thinker, I illustrated them in this digital drawing.

I use Graphic Facilitation and Graphic Co-creation as thinking tools for better discussions due to a different meeting setup. Both help people to find solutions, to innovate, to brainstorm, to reach consensus, to make decisions. Compared to the following techniques, the level of involvement of participants is high in these two techniques, and very high in graphic co-creation.

I use Graphic Recording or Sketchnotes to visually capture live the main messages of your conference, meeting, or training. This helps participants to “see” their thoughts, to consider the topic being presented and discussed from another angle, and to better retain information and learning. Depending on the circumstances, I work on a large mural or on a sketchbook.

I use Visual Communication with hand-drawn illustrations to attract people's attention incredibly. It gives more impact to your message, which is better understood and memorised by your audience. This is the technique with the lowest involvement level of the participants.
