My wife and I made plans for one year to make sure we could take a vacation planned around The Venardos Circus in Asheville, NC. We planned to stay for ten days! The first day of prep two days before take-off, our slide out on our RV broke. This was our third of three slide outs to break in some manor to hinder our plans. Fortunately, I found the Mobile RV Doctor Gary Castor. $611.00 later and an entire day of wrenching we were ready and determined to catch the sold-out show. We thought we might catch a hotel. But booking a Hotel in Asheville during leaf blowing season is a $300.00 per night adventure for a room. I was thinking the entire time having flashbacks of 30 years on the road as an entertainer, thinking, imagine my problem times 20 other entertainers! These entertainers had deadlines to meet and have to make the show come hell or broken slide outs! On our way, we blocked traffic for a while as Asheville makes these skinny turns to the interstate too small for trucks or large RV’s. I narrowly missed a median sign and but for the kindness of a stranger might still be there trying to avoid scratches on my fifth wheel.
In my thirty years on the road as a professional Frisbee Flying Disc player I ran into the best and worst acts on the road in many different venues. I learned first-hand how hard it is to market and sell an act. I had learned the hard way from town to town and had an understanding at the marvel I was about to witness.
I pulled into the Venardos Circus on the last leg of their US tour in the middle of their two-week showing in Asheville. I was awed by the neatness, cleanliness and visual appeal of the set up. They kept their lot squeaky clean. I was amazed by the signage, the generators, the vendor trucks and the way the entertainers all had many different hats to wear.
Every single entertainer was seasoned often many generations of life-long Circus and stage performers. This was a rare treat for any town. Every single entertainer came from larger shows that swap talent. They swab the decks and wash the floors. The owner of the Circus takes the garbage out at the end of each show. Behind the glitz and glamour of being famous in their own specialty arts, they each swabbed the stage, set up the tents, sold the concessions, worked the ticket booths and worked this show 24/7! You could tell it. Each act could carry an audience on their own for hours at a time. However, Venardos produced a show that was nothing short of a Broadway or Vegas show with incredible timing and professionalism! There is no wonder that he is booked for FORTY-FIVE MORE dates all over the United States for the 2020 season. They had to easily work 16 hour days full blast all day!
His hospitality was amazing. He extended an invitation for me to live with his team for the rest of his duration in Asheville. I had to think of the love I have for my wife and had to leave because of her schedule. I did not want to leave!
I understand Kevin is looking for a good sound and light person! His last stop is at my favorite town in St Augustine, Florida to kick off his 45 town 2020 season! He will be performing on the same stage as many of the most popular musicians of all times have performed at The St Augustine Amphitheatre! When I lived in St Augustine, I could barely feed myself and my favorite ex-girlfriend! Kevin has twenty teams to feed and their families!
Circus families are the greatest entertainers and athletes of our time. You have to see it to believe it!

Il percorso di ricerca di Associazione Mirada in questi anni si è spesso intersecato con le vicende palestinesi e la cultura di questo popolo: proprio nell’ultima edizione di Komikazen Mirada ha ospitato il disegnatore palestinese Samir Harb e ha inoltre coordinato per alcuni anni la mostra Kufia – Matite per la Palestina. Quanto sta accadendo in questi giorni a Gaza dovrebbe scuotere le coscienze dei popoli e dei loro governanti, ma in una forma di latente sonnolenza del muscolo “indignazione”, la popolazione civile è falcidiata per una operazione chiamata “di polizia”. Ritenendo che il disegno, le forme di espressione artistica, la ricerca visiva in genere, abbiano un grande dovere nei confronti del pensiero e delle scelte individuali, lo spazio della galleria Mirada sarà dedicato da venerdì 16 gennaio 2009 fino al 14 febbraio 2009 al disegnatore Naji Al Ali, creatore del personaggio Handala, il piccolo bambino palestinese con le spalle voltate allo spettatore che in moltissimi paesi arabi è una sorta di mascotte venduta in ogni spaccio. Naji Al Ali (Palestina 1937 – Londra 1987) ha creato più di 40.000 vignette, pubblicate in moltissimi paesi arabi, rappresentando per la prima volta il ruolo del disegnatore non solo audace critico dei costumi sociali e privati, ma anche rivelatore dell’ipocrisia politica, impegnato poeta della matita per una soluzione politicamente giusta della causa del proprio popolo. Naji fu misteriosamente ucciso nell’estate del 1987 a Londra, dove si era rifugiato in esilio, ma la sua opera è ancora cultura per tutto il mondo arabo laico e critico. La mostra esporrà una selezione di vignette, tradotte appositamente da Tahar Lamri, intellettuale e scrittore algerino che vive da anni nella nostra città. Inoltre le stampe in mostra saranno messe in vendita e il ricavato sarà devoluto interamente agli ospedali diretti da Mustafa Barghouti “The Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees” (http://www.pmrs.ps) in Cisgiordania e nella Striscia di Gaza. La mostra sarà inoltre a disposizione di chi ne faccia richiesta per gli stessi fini.
In occasione dell’inaugurazione saranno presenti, oltre a Lamri che racconterà dell’importanza del disegnatore palestinese e delle sue peculiarità, Alessandro Taddei, del gruppo Ponte Radio, il quale è impegnato proprio in questi mesi in un laboratorio teatrale con i bambini palestinesi, laboratorio il cui esito sarà presentato alla Biennale di Venezia, ed Elettra Stamboulis, Assessore alla Pace del Comune di Ravenna.
Saranno proiettate anche le foto della fotografa Virginia Paradinas.

“Wake” uses Liz’s family photos digitally combined with her own photography to retell lost moments experienced over five generations. The installation probes how memories are forgotten, passed down, and retold in the wake of passing time.

Trish Brownlee, About Face, mixed media installation.
Through personal experience and research, Trish Brownlee explores post-9/11 military life in the mixed media artwork exhibited in About Face. This work was created through collaboration between artist and subject and suggests that art is capable of serving as a tool to bridge the gap between military and civilian communities. The exhibit offers a space for open communication and welcomes all who are willing to bear witness. This work serves as a voice for those who too often remain silent.

A collaborative, visual project which encourages you to sign out a Visual Library Book and ‘Leave Your Mark’.
A Visual Library Book is whatever you want it to be, a sketchbook, a journal, a diary, a notepad.
You can ‘Leave Your Mark’ in whatever way you want, ranging from drawing, writing, sewing, adding photographs, markings, printing and sticking. How you make your marks is entirely up to you. All we ask is that you have fun with the different themes. Just borrow it on your library card with other books and materials. If you are not already a member, just ask the staff to help you.
45 Visual Library Books have been placed in Portsmouth Central Library and each has its own theme ranging from; Portsmouth, My City, When I Open My Eyes, Whilst I Was Waiting, Love, What’s in My Pocket and Memories. The intention is for you to feel free to explore the Visual Library Books and choose a theme that you like.

The Monochoirium
A performance for The Monochronium exhibition by Hazel Evans, Visual Artist in Residence at Lighthouse Poole, October 2011.
The Monochoiruim performance was inspired by the poem by Hazel Evans 'The Monochroinium', written specifically for the exhibition. The performance was co-created and directed by Ali Sharpe Voice Coach and Choir Master.
The piece takes you on a surreal journey into a monochromatic world of words, images and music juxtaposing the art of play with the world of work and conformity.

Sashimee in collaborazione con l'associazione culturale "Rondine", presenta un grande progetto di video arte in una delle piazze più belle d'Italia, Piazza 4 Novembre a Perugia.

«La pace non è assenza di conflitto. Il conflitto è un fatto inevitabile della vita quotidiana: conflitti interiori, interpersonali, tra gruppi e internazionali. La pace consiste nell’affrontare in modo creativo i conflitti. Pace è il modo di procedere per risolvere i conflitti in modo tale che entrambe le parti vincano [...]».
Così scrive J. e K. McGinnis, con parole che ben si prestano ad interpretare questo evento e chi ne è promotore: l’associazione “Rondine cittadella della Pace”.
Accettare il conflitto senza rimuoverlo; superarlo attraverso il dialogo e il confronto, affinché le parti coinvolte ne escano arricchite, vincitrici appunto.
È qui racchiuso, infatti, il senso ultimo dell’idea ispiratrice che da anni sostiene l’esperienza e i progetti dell’associazione Rondine. Nell’omonimo borgo medievale, in provincia di Arezzo, giovani provenienti dai Paesi in conflitto dei Balcani, del Caucaso, del Medio Oriente e dell’Africa, diversi per identità culturale e politica, spesso nemici di confine, hanno qui, a Rondine, la possibilità di sperimentare invece una vita di convivenza, di formazione e di studio, altrimenti impossibile nelle loro terre di origine.
L’obiettivo è quello di creare le condizioni affinché le reciproche diffidenze e diversità possano essere superate attraverso un’esperienza culturale di scambio.
E’ a partire da tali premesse, dunque, che si sviluppa anche la performance Le Armi della Pace.
Si tratta infatti di uno spettacolo Multimediale (Audio/Visual) che ricerca un dialogo tra realtà normalmente lontane e spesso “in conflitto”, quale la musica antica, vocale e rinascimentale di Palestrina, ad esempio, e le tendenze invece della musica contemporanea odierna, inclini all’uso delle nuove tecnologie e dei nuovi media. Ancora, la convivenza di stili e di linguaggi diversi si realizza nell’incontro tra la video arte e l’architettura.
La cattedrale di Perugia, già artisticamente rilevante, diverrà con la sua mole imponente una superficie che il video artista Philiph Geist userà al pari di una tela. Giocando con la struttura, con le linee, e sempre tendendo da conto il significato storico e simbolico dell’edificio, il video artista proietterà sulla facciata immagini in movimento, sincronizzate con la musica, alternando l’uso di colori, di linee spezzate, di forme astratte, a figure invece reali: fotografie degli interni, immagini di Perugia, ma anche rappresentazioni di momenti di fratellanza, di gioia e di condivisione tra le persone.
Nelle intenzioni dell’ideatore – il compositore Fabrizio Nocci – antico e moderno, classico e contemporaneo, dovranno dunque confrontarsi per superare il divario che normalmente li separa e ritrovare, proprio nel connubio tra linguaggi e stili differenti, un nuovo significato possibile.
L’idea è quella di suggerire, in termini artistici, le potenzialità insite in un progetto come quello dell’associazione Rondine, ricordandone le linee guida: accettare il conflitto, sapersi confrontare con il proprio passato, superarlo, trarre beneficio dall’incontro con il diverso.
