Visually a bowl barrow, but potentially a bell barrow, with an infilled ditch. The main tumulus has the appearance of a 'U' due to historical interference including a 'dig' by Greville Chester in 1850. This is one of 10,000 surviving examples of bowl barrows - mostly in lowland Britain. Many more have been destroyed by farming (source: historicengland.org.uk).

Date: 4400-3500 ybp (Another paper cites barrows in this heaths as middle Bronze Age 3200-3000 BC).

15m apparent diameter.

20m diameter with expected hidden ditch.

2 types of pottery urn were found within, each with cremated remnants. A third broken urn was also found.

Mesolithic stone tools have been found on the general heathland. Neolithic stone tools and pieces of pottery have also been found at different times and on different sites. Many are now at the Norwich museum.

No camera with me today, but just as well... too many visually stimulating distractions at the Powerhouse, I'd have run amok.

Go check it out someday! It's kind of like a trip to the House on the Rock was back when I was a child and it was just an unusual house—on a rock. This is a recreation center—in a coal powerplant. A visually and physically stimulating space to visit.

The Beloit College Powerhouse is open to the public now. Due to staffing, there's been no big "open to public" promo thing. It's like a "soft open." You enter via the door on Pleasant Street and follow the signs. There's a nice gift shop on the ground level.

I don't know what's allowed or even possible, but I can imagine this becoming a great indoor location for portrait photographers. If I were the Beloit College Powerhouse, I'd consider a Rotary or Sinnissippi Gardens license fee structure for professional photographers.

Visually, the Type G van is very similar to the Type H.

Well done to Referee John for his experienced approach to this bout.

Great sportsmanship & wrestling from both."

The Drums of Africa is a visually expressed personal guidance system. Our ancestors have documented the lessons of life into profound proverbs that can be easily remembered and referred to in our approach to everyday life. The series

displays these proverbs as typographic compositions combined with tribal forms found in South Africa’s folk

arts and crafts. In fact, symbolic elements from the intricate beadwork of the Bantu-speaking tribes, the refined basketry of the Zulu, and the highly coloured, bold, geometric forms of the Ndebele, ordain the fragile hand-drawn Helvetica typeface.

The result is a combination of contemporary type,

decorated with traditional silhouettes. Upholding the lessons and motivations of African culture, the compositions serve as daily affirmations and motivations.

The original oil paintings are on display at Kozi’s : Meet ’n Eat, an African inspired restaurant in Athens, Greece. A limited edition of signed prints have been created to accompany the work and are also available online at www.dimitratzanos.com

The Broad is a very cool contemporary art museum in downtown LA. We heard about it on Trip Advisor and decided to check it out. Great decision! We really don't have a clue about modern art but the art in the Broad was fantastic - visually stimulating, thought provoking, and in some cases pretty strange. The Broad is free to visit but you need tickets to get in - but it's a piece of cake. This was the best thing we saw in downtown LA.

Master Butcher

Visually impaired people playing with sighted feel that accessibility kits can be clunky, alter the gameplay for everyone and highlight their impairment. Social interaction between players is different with a visually impaired person present, and the players can tell the difference.

In ‘Master Butcher’ concealment, not seeing and vocalisation of one’s actions is part of the fun, not an action catering only for the visually impaired. All aspects of the game are either tactile or sound, the latter created by the players themselves, conversing. This enables an organic gaming environment despite any visual impairment, pushing towards a middle-ground instead of a false sense of equality.

‘Master Butcher’ is a game of deception where players assume the role of a butcher in medieval Britain, trying to source and sell meat for maximum profit at the farmer’s market. However, good meat is scarce and to make ends meet one might have to resort to selling bad meat instead. Every turn one of the players assumes the role of a customer at the market, buying meat and waging whether the butchers are telling the truth or not. Is the meat in the sales bag actually what they say it is? The butchers have apprentices that can run errands for them and play trickery on other butchers, thus sabotaging their pursuit of success.

Angkor Wat is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking. It is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level. Angkor Wat is the centerpiece of any visit to the temples of Angkor.

At the apex of Khmer political and military dominance in the region, Suryavarman II constructed Angkor Wat in the form of a massive 'temple-mountain' dedicated to the Hindu god, Vishnu. It served as his state temple, though the temple’s uncommon westward orientation has led some to suggest that it was constructed as Suryavarman II’s funerary temple. Other temples of the same style and period include Thommanon, Banteay Samre, Wat Atwea and Beng Melea, which may have served as a prototype to Angkor Wat.

Angkor Wat is surrounded by a moat and an exterior wall measuring 1300 meters x 1500 meters. The temple itself is 1 km square and consists of three levels surmounted by a central tower. The walls of the temple are covered inside and out with bas-reliefs and carvings. Nearly 2000 distinctively rendered apsara carvings adorn the walls throughout the temple and represent some of the finest examples of apsara carvings in Angkorian era art. But it is the exterior walls of the lower level that display the most extraordinary bas-reliefs, depicting stories and characters from Hindu mythology and the historical wars of Suryavarman II. It is in the viewing of the bas-reliefs that a tour guide can be very helpful.

The northern reflecting pool in front is the most popular sunrise location. For sunrise, arrive very early, well before sunrise begins. The sun will rise behind Angkor Wat providing a silhouette of Angkor’s distinctively shaped towers against a colored sunrise sky. Some of the best colors appear just before the sun breaks over the horizon.

The visual impact of Angkor Wat, particularly on one's first visit, is awesome. As you pass through the outer gate and get your first glimpse, its size and architecture make it appear two dimensional, like a giant postcard photo against the sky. After you cross through the gate and approach the temple along the walkway it slowly gains depth and complexity. To maximize this effect you should make your first visit in optimal lighting conditions, i.e. after 2:00PM. Do not make your first visit to Angkor Wat in the morning when the backlighting obscures the view.

The first level of is the most artistically interesting. Most visitors begin their exploration with the bas-reliefs that cover the exterior wall of the first level, following the bas-reliefs counterclockwise around the temple. Bas-relief highlights include the mythological Battle of Kuru on the west wall; the historical march of the army of Suryavarman II, builder of Angkor Wat, against the Cham, followed by scenes from Heaven and Hell on the south wall; and the classic ‘Churning of the Ocean Milk’ on the east wall.

The temple interior is not as densely carved as the first level exterior, but still sports hundreds of fine carvings of apsaras and scenes from Hindu mythology. A guide can be quite helpful in explaining the stories of the various chambers, statues and architectural forms to be found in the interior. At the upper-most of your tour of the temple, the central tower on the third level houses four Buddha images, each facing a different cardinal point, highlighting the fact that though Angkor Wat was constructed as a Hindu temple, it has served as a Buddhist temple since Buddhism became Cambodia’s dominant religion in the 14th century. Some say that it is good luck to pay homage to all four Buddha images before departing Angkor.

A visually appealing course - rich vibrant colours with safe flavour pairings. The cheeries were globes of unctuous deep flavours and absolutelly stunning. The duck, rather light given the rich flavours and textures I would have expected from such a game bird (this could be my own fault of being too used to the glorious deep flavours and meaty texture from smoked duck). The radish bed, refreshing against the flavourful jus, while the spongy steamed bun wrapped around a loose shredded duck (confit? A tad on the drier side) was a great juxtaposition against crisp rich walnuts.

The course was paried with the Sonoma Cutrer "Russian River Valley" Pinot Noir, California. From a small winery, with this particular wine listing at # 8 on last year's wine spectator list, and something the sommolier/wine director of the evening had to import himself across the boarder. Very nice, full of dark cherry notes and licorice. Great for the course.

"During Chris' previous visit to James Beard House in 2006, the duck dish he served proved to be the most popular of the evening. This year, Chris will be serving duck again, but in a different style. Star anise flavour and a Korean-style steam bun wrap highlight the dish. The Asian influence is complimented by Lapin cherries from Kelowna, B.C., which were canned by Chris this past summer."

Long distance traveling can sometimes be boring...

All you need to do is point the camera at the side of the road & the magic happens...

This is a long exposure motion blurred on purpose photograph that creates the feeling of movement within a still image.

The photo tries to represent the experience of motion itself.

It 'stretches the moment' both literally (in the camera shutter is held open) and visually (as the details of the subject blur out horizontally).

What colour is this packet of polymer clay?

There is more than one way to experience colours. One way is to see them. The other way is to feel them. Blind and visually impaired people like to do arts and crafts, too. Beading, polymer clay, knitting, origami and other things all involve colours. Combining the right colours of beads or wool, choosing the right colour of paper or polymer clay is still important even if you can't see. Braille labels can solve this problem very elegantly. Posting a sticker with the description of the colour on a box of beads or on a packet of polymer clay is a great way to feel the colours of the contents.

To answer the question I asked at the beginning: The Braille label on this packet of polymer clay tells me that the colour of the clay is "lemon yellow".

A visually stunning decorative map of the world dating to 1852, by French map publisher Victor Levasseur. Levasseur depicts the world on a Mercator Projection, showing the six known continents as well as traces of Antarctica. The cartographic style of this piece is minimalist, but a few elements do bear special note. These include the extension of Oregon territory well into British Columbia, reflecting the American claims that later led to the 54’ 40” dispute. Also in North America, Texas is identified as an independent nation. Far to the north both the Northwest Passage over America and the Northeast Passage over Europe and Asia, are drawn as open and practically navigable waterways. By far this map's most striking feature is its elaborate allegorical border work. Levasseur composed this map for publication in his magnificent Atlas Nacionale de la France Illustree , one of the most decorative and beautifully produced atlases to appear in the 19th century. This particular map is surrounded by four medallions bearing allegorical representations of the seasons. Spring, in the upper left, is represented by a young unclothed woman modestly covering herself with garlands. Summer, in the lower right, is a powerful bearded man wearing an animal skin and surrounded by the bounty of life. Fall, upper right, is a young man reaping the harvest. And winter, lower left, is a huddled old woman in a barren snow covered setting. Atop the map is an image of the firmament, with shooting starts, clouds, and a symbolic representation of the Zodiac. At center is a curious unclothed women with four breasts who appears to be chained to the earth or to a heavy box which she is holding - Pandora? Adam and Eve appear to her right walking hand in hand through pre-fall Eden. There too is the serpent, slithering just behind the couple. At the base of the map an even more interesting scene unfolds in the form of a curious panorama. Here Jesus sits enthroned, bearing a cross in his left hand and pointing with his right, his head surrounded by a pyramid (a Masonic reference?). To his left are a stoic crowd including Napoleon, Socrates, and other unidentifiable great men bearing signs reading Paix (peace), Liber (freedom), and Egalite (equality). Behind them is a domed building that appears to be a Greek or Roman temple. Opposite this scene, on Jesus' right is a very different scene showing a crowd fleeing in terror - these include a Pharisee holding the Torah and a turbaned Saracen. Behind them are the pyramids of Egypt. They are running towards what appears to be the jungle in the midst of which is a plinth upon which sets a bust of Satan. In this we can only assume that Levasseur is attempting to convey the righteousness of reason and logic over emotion and old world superstition. Published by V. Levasseur as page no. 95 in the 1853 edition of his Atlas National de la France Illustree.
