This is called the droste effect and it's something I have wanted to do since... well, forever! I finally managed to create one tonight as I couldn't go to my usual camera club due to the weather outside. I'm very excited what other objects etc might work with this!!

I think there's a gas leak in the sewage tunnel...
Background is one static photo with the energy vortex, flying papers, and camera shakes composited on top in AfterEffects(sorta like layers in Photoshop).
Best viewed full screen, the play track's kinda in the way on the smaller version.
Making mountains out of foam and dirt for the Power Rangers Megazord transformation from season 1 to season 2. The toy Zord is there for comparison since we used actual toys to create the in-camera puppets/models. Such is life on a low-budget kids show.
Here's the Mega Thunderzord scene that puppet ended up in.

Watching it again, I see now that we were attempting to match directly to Japanese footage. Not bad for a bunch of kids.

Actual model shoot with the Sabertooth Tiger Megazord. The wires we're manipulating allowed the head and legs to move. From left, a guy whose name I don't recall (part of the model team or an intern, I forget), Rick Shick, and me.

sigma 4.5 fisheye
i use a Nikon d300, which is not a full frame DSLR, this converts to about 6.75mm lens. about 180 degree view.
in a rush, i can get a complete spherical panorama in 2 angles but i prefer more coverage.

Actual model shoot with the Megazord (hanging by a rod about upper-midframe) combining with that thing on the ground. Lights flash from the bottom Zord and during another set-up, fire shoots out of its mouth via flash paper which was then enhanced in visual effects. We did all the work to make the toys camera-ready. From left, Rick Shick and me.
Note the painted line on the ground next to me. Yes, that's a parking space. We had a couple of parking spaces in our underground lot that could be converted into a blue or greenscreen stage in minutes. We shot many elements there for Power Rangers as well as the sitcom, Home Improvement.
This strange visual / atmospheric effect was going on that early May evening above the Manitou Islands -- like a double reflection at a certain height above the water. That's the South Manitou Lighthouse.
It turns out this is a Fata Morgana -- "an atmospheric mirage, commonly seen in frigid Polar regions, caused by complexly arranged thermal gradients, within a temperature inversion. The word, from Italian, means 'Fairy Morgan', and alludes to Morgan LeFay, King Arthur's sorceress half sister, who legendarily had the power to create crystal palaces in the air." See here for more details.
This was taken standing on the shore at Sleeping Bear Point. In this photo, noise was reduced and the color enhanced, but otherwise it's unaltered. Here are two more photos taken the same night: one and two.

This video is made from 24 photos taken on the 1st Light Painting Workshop by Oddball Graphics
I would like to thank light painters Maarten Takens, Ina Ellpunkt and Anika Möllenbeck from the Noctis Lux team for being the first attending my workshops and for allowing me to use their photos to make this video.
A very big thank you to Rutger Verberkmoes for the excellent sound track. You can read my thoughts man! ;) I’ve also used his track to control one of the layers.

macbeth color chip chart. i think big one is about 9 x 11"-ish. small one is 2 x 3".
shoot a few seconds of this at the beginning of the day on the first roll, when you change lighting setups, or when you switch film stocks.
