Stefanie McLaren, a UWM Graphic Design student, who is also dancer, made this grid study of "constructed" letterforms using her body.

This is a detail from a painting (anonymous, around 1700), as seen in the Historisches Museum in Bern on August 18, 2011. It shows a so called Schreibkalender, or a writing calendar (a diary and a calendar in one, full of noteworthy facts about the planets and the weather).

This painting reminded me of a very interesting talk by Drohr Wahrman I heard at Reading University one month earlier, on the trompe-l'oeil paintings by Edward Collier. Collier also depicted a lot of ephemeral printing and manuscript sources, using them as a kind of visual pun. Could this be a similar case?

The cover says (as far as I can make out):

Alter Verbesserter und Newer Schreibkalender Auff das Jahr M.D.CC. nach der heilsamen Geburt Jesu Christi mit dem Lauff der Sonnen Monde und andere [...] Aspecten, sampt den [...] Auff der hoch[...] Durch Jacobum Rosium Mathematicum [printer's mark] Basel in [...]

When trying to find out more about this 'Schreibkalender' - to trace a real copy, that is (if any survived), I suddenly found it mentioned at an auction (I have no intention of buying it).

The 'Schreibkalender' seems to be a hot topic, by the way. And Google Books offers a look inside a slightly older one here.

I gave a workshop on geomancy at a retreat this past weekend. Increasingly I'm trying to make use of visual note-taking and presentation, so these were my diagrams and materials. I hung them on the wall, gave the workshop, and encouraged the attendees to photograph them for later study.

Visual Diplomacy means the use of images in public diplomacy. With the advent of social media, every public diplomatist can be a photographer or videographer. The U.S. Department of State carries out an aggressive training program for public diplomacy staffers around the world.

THE AGE OF FLOWERING PLANTS -

(Edited & Updated Oct 29, 2015)

ANGIOSPERM means "seed borne in vessel," while GYMNOSPERM means "naked seed," a reference to the lack of protective structure enveloping the seed. One reason that flowering plants were able to diversify so dramatically and spread during the Cretaceous and Cenozoic, or MODERN, the era was the evolution of new structures and tissues such as the carpel, a womb-like vessel that encloses angiosperm seeds and endosperm, a placenta-like tissue that nourishes the young plant as it develop within the seed, Today, angiosperm dominate terrestrial life on the planet. At an estimated 422,000 species, they compose by far the largest group of plants. They grow in greater range of environments, exhibits a wider range of growth habits, and display more variation in form than any living group of plants. In size, angiosperm range from tiny duckweed to eucaplytuses more than 330 ft (100 m) tall.

The explosion of angiosperm diversity has gone hand in hand with the proliferation of INSECTS, BIRDS, and OTHER ANIMALS that pollinate their flowers, disperse their fruits and seeds, and eat their leaves.

Diana doesn't think she's photogenic. So please leave a comment and help me persuade her that she is just plain wrong on this point.
