St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

Orleans Parish
St. Louis No. 1 cemetery (1789) is the oldest extant cemetery in New Orleans. New Orleans was faced with great death and hardship during the years of 1787 and 1788 leading up to the the creation of St Louis No. 1. The city, under Spanish rule at this time, was rocked with plague and disease, claiming many lives due to malaria, smallpox and influenza. The following year, a fire broke out on Good Friday and swept through New Orleans, destroying over 80% of the city and just a few scant months later, a hurricane wiped out another huge portion of the city - along came St Louis No 1 to house the departed.
This beautiful cemetery has people from all walks of life regardless of income, race or nationality. The only division between burial areas is by religion. Louisiana was Roman Catholic by law at that time and is still owned by the New Orleans Archdiocese today. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, thousands of protestants arrived to New Orleans, so a protestant section was created in the rear left corner of this Catholic cemetery.
