My father was born an raised in this little house in Vík í Mýrdal. Vík í Mýrdal is a small town on the south coast of Iceland.
My grandfather Oddur is with us in this photo. This is the Víkurkirkja, the church at Vík í Mýrdal, which stands high on a hill overlooking the village. Constructed in 1934 using a simple, traditional design, the church is an iconic landmark on the south coast of Iceland, and is visited by many tourists every year. However, the beauty of Vík í Mýrdal and the Víkurkirkja betray the danger that lies in the location of Vík, as the village lies directly south of the Mýrdalsjökull Glacier atop to Katla Volcano. If the volcano were to erupt again with greater or equal power to the eruption it underwent in 1918, the entire town would be in danger of being swept away by a massive flood, with the church atop the hill being the only safe location from the hazard. The village, which was only a sparse collection of farmsteads before the 1890s, sits in a vulnerable, yet beautiful place at the southernmost point of Iceland, and is a popular spot for tourists taking the ring road around the island to see the natural beauty of the land of fire and ice.
