The famous Reynisdrangar rocks of Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach with its big sneaky waves that knock down so many unaware tourists. Near by is a small town call Vik
I discovered Iceland during an expedition in the unknown I recently did by myself. I can t emphasise enough the beauty of this place. There is over there something totally unreal about it after staying there only for one week, I was submerged with a strange feeling... a feeling that I was not really on the same planet, there is this empty and desolate side in this beautiful place. I barely scratched the surface and I will sure be back in Iceland for some "out of this world" adventures...
I will try to share some of this beauty here but it is only a fraction of the whole thing, so get out there and see it for yourself ...
Vík í Mýdral
Vík es un pequeño pueblo de 300 habitantes ubicado en el extremo sur de Islandia. Es un destino muy popular para los viajeros que seguimos la ruta turística que bordea la costa sur del país.
Vík es conocido por sus impresionantes paisajes naturales, con vistas espectaculares a las playas de arena negra, los acantilados y las montañas que lo rodean. La playa de Reynisfjara es uno de los puntos turísticos más populares de la zona, con formaciones rocosas únicas y olas imponentes que golpean la costa.
Cuando organizamos el viaje me ilusioné con traer alguna foto de la iglesia y los islotes del fondo con un bonito cielo nocturno, o incluso con alguna aurora. Pero la realidad es la que es y nos recibió un hermoso día lluvioso y muy frío. Ideal para probar la cocina de los bonitos restaurantes del pueblo.
Estuvimos un buen rato en el cementerio que domina la colina, esperando que el parking estuviese más despejado, deseando un haz de luz estremeciéndose entre las nubes, pero no hubo suerte. Quizá en otra visita...

Every town seemed to have a church like this and every town (and its church) seemed to be tucked up against a hill like this
Vik beach. One of icelands other extra-ordinary beaches. Black sand, and thouroughly dangerous waves. These waves will catch you out. There were three of us shooting on this beach and all three got thoroughly soaked. I got soaked twice, the second more dangerous for me and my camera.
Rule number 234: Never, never, never cross a rives that runs into the sea, no matter how shallow it looks...
I had my wellys and as i crossed the river on the beach, (Tripod in hand, camera attached to the tripod) Running as the waves were withdrawing, i began to sink into quick sand which engulfed me and my boots, and hence falling forwards, all i could see was my camera submerged in the vicious water. I dont know how but i put my left had out and managed to break the fall of the camera into the see by replacing it by the left side of my body. My 'friend' on the side of the river ran towards me to help, but then stopped and decided to take a photograph instead..I taught him everything he knows...

The village of Vík is the southernmost village in Iceland, on the road down to the Reynisfjara black sand beach.
South coast classic tour.
South Iceland
When a 3 day storm has a bit of a rest, the only thing to do is get yourself out there! This is exactly what we did in Iceland! For once we actually saw blue sky!!! Whilst we happened to be in the wrong place for sunset (glorious light on the other side of Vik) we were just pleased to see any colour other than white!
Vik is on the South coast of Iceland had has these wonderful salt stacks protruding the horizon out of the sea. With this shot, I had set up the composition perfectly, waiting for the next wave to just kiss the rock and then drag it's silky lines back into the sea... unbeknown to us, every 10th wave is a large wave which happened to be the next one, it left us running a good few meters back to avoid being encompassed by the huge wave crashing towards us! Once the wave had retreated, I headed back down to compose again and ended up having to hold the tripod extremely still as the next wave came along, disturbing the volcanic sand beneath us!
Once again I had to work for my shot, but I'm really pleased with the outcome, given the conditions we braced, I'm glad to have captured some nice colour in the clouds and reflections!
