Burn Scars Along the Upper McCord Creek falls Trail by Gary L. Quay

I was in the Gorge last Saturday for what turned out to be a very short hike. I went out too late to make it to Upper McCord Creek falls, but I wanted to get a decent way up. That was not happening, because the rain started in earnest, and darkness was falling by the time I made it about a quarter mile. That's okay. I got this picture.

I had picked up my freshly repaired Deardorff 8x10 from the camera shop earlier that day, and went out to see how well it worked. It had developed some light leaks over the years, and was in sore need of maintenance. I drove out to Dufur, hoping to get some 8x10's at this spot, but by the time I got there, it was too windy for a large camera like that. The scene was also backlit. I could have done some Zone System maneuvers to bring out the shadows, but those would have taken the exposure time beyond what was possible for a bellows camera in the wind. So, I settled for some digital images. Afterward, I drove back to Rowena, where I used the lea of Rowena Crest to shelter my camera from the wind, and got some images that I will soon be developing. In the meantime, here's Dufur with Mount Hood in the background.

I like this particular view. I have been trying to get it right for a few years.

A little bit of evening sunlight was escaping the cloud cover over the Stonehenge replica at Maryhill, Washington in January. The cows didn't care. I chose to get a wider view of the scene rather than a closeup of the replica to get all of the cattle into the picture, and show the sweep of the landscape around it.

The London Cable Car, nicknamed the Dangleway, aka the Emirates Air Line over the River Thames in London, England.

The one time you "fly " with Emirates where you don't have to wear a seatbelt, guaranteed window seat & you can have your own first class cabin all to yourself.

Flying at 14 mph through the air, cruising altitude of 90 meters ( 300 feet ) with a journey time of 10 minutes.

Gaia and I were on what I called Madrone Quest today. We went to Washington to see if we could capture the elusive Madrone (or Madrona) tree on some 8x10 sheet film. I have a show coming up at the Madrona Cafe in Lakebay, Washington, and I wanted some of the namesake trees on film. I have one such picture in the show, which I took about 20 years ago on Vancouver Island, but I wanted more for future shows. Well, Madrone Quest failed. They grow on the edges of cliffs, and we didn't have the time to go far enough north to find an accessible spot. One needs both a pretty tree and a pretty background, and the highway does not suffice for the latter. We did some exploring on SR 4, getting as far as Cathlamet, and did a pretty drive on Puget Island before heading back toward Longview, and then home.

I set the Wayback Machine to 2009 for this image of Wahkeena Falls in the Columbia Gorge. I finally got everything together to do wet mount scanning, and this is the first one that I tried. Apparently, there's a learning curve. The negative is not one that I would miss if I destroyed it, so it was a good candidate for my first wet mount scan. I'm not as impressed by the improvement brought by process as I thought I would be.

Sunday in the Land of the Dead by Gary L. Quay

Gaia and I were out at a cemetary on Taylor's Ferry Road a few Sundays ago. I was looking to recreate a picture I made in the late 90's. I ran into two problems. 1) They had raked the leaves in most of the cemetary. The picture required red leaves to be covering the stairway I wanted to photograph. 2) I couldn't find the stairway. The place is such a labyrinth that I even had trouble finding the exit. I got this picture, though.

I was told many years ago by the caretaker at this cemetary that I could take pictures as long as the names on the graves were not visible. I have always resepced that request. Tread lightly, fellow photographers.

I accidentally rated this film as 400 ASA, thinking that it was Rollei RPX 400. I made a correction in the darkroom, and it seems to have solved the problem.

I don’t remember exactly where this was, but I took it sometime around 2007 on the Oregon Coast. It was quite the colorful sunset.

This was a straight scan without correction. The saturation of the film is astounding.

Starvation Creek Falls is a difficult waterfall to photograph. There's just too much detail. I thought about orienting the camera vertical, but decided against it because my efforts at focus stacking have not been very successful. Besides, I like getting the trees on the left in the picture and the broken wall into the picture.

This is the first picture I took with my new (used) Noblex panoramic camera. The first roll did not go very well. I learned very quickly that a cable release was absolutely necessary, and that my ball head tripod was not going to work. I needed to be able to adjust side to side, and up and down movements separately. I took a second roll, and I will get that deveoped soon.

This image is not as sharp as I’d like it to be. The lens has to revolve multiple times to make longer exposures. The camera has to be absolutely motionless as the lens is in motion. If you don’t know about this camera, look it up. it’’s quite interesting. I’ve wanted one for years.

Beach Grass and Sand, Manzanita, Oregon by Gary L. Quay

Oregon has both rocky shorelines, and sandy beaches. Best of all, the beaches are open for everyone. None are fenced off, and access is free. I remember going to a beach called Point Pleasant, New Jersey in 1991. Wealthy landowners had sectioned off the beach with fences, and were charging $5.00 to enter. Someone could not walk along the beach for any appreciable distance without paying multiple fees. The boardwalk was almost empty in peak season because nobody was going to the beach there. We bought sandwiches from a gratfeul boardwalk vendor, and left. Thank goodness Oregon has universal beach access.

Pasture on the Hill, Ortley, Oregon by Gary L. Quay

Descending Seven Mile Hill as it approaches The Dalles, you pass through an unincorporated area known as Ortley. It is to settlements what a cup of water is to an ocean, but after a few of mixing with the surrounding waters. It was a town of about 300 back in 1911, but its fall was as rapid as its rise, as it proved too windy and dry to grow the apples around which the town pinned its hopes. It is listed as a ghost town, but no traces of it exist. There are, however, horses and wheat fields.

I mentioned the wind in the last paragraph. It’s a dramatic, stiff, fly your poodle like a kite kind of wind. As such, that’s my hair in the upper right area of the picture.

The area around Cripple Creek was devistated in the 2020 Riverside Fire. I traveled there during a drive along the Clackamas River. I took this pictue from a bridge on Pipeline Road, which was named for a pipeline that goes along the road to a PGE hydroelectric facility along the Clackamas River near the spot.

Rowena, Oregon burned in a wildfire this summer. I have been photographong the area for the last 10 years, so it wsa a bit of a gut punch. The area in this photo survived. The burn begins just to the left of the picture. I will be documenting the regrowth in the coming years.

I like the way this one is split in two pieces: a light side and a dark side. On the right, we have a bright, sunny side that we will call "Luke", and on the other is a dark and forboding cliff we will call "Vader". The river is the Force that flows between them.

2005 marked the last production year for Konica IR 750 film. I was trying to use it sparingly. This is Wahkeena Falls in the Columbia Gorge, Oregon. Water is usually difficult to photograph in infrared, but can be easier when it runs down a shallow, cascade waterfall like his one.
