This was my first hike up to Upper McCord Creek Falls in a few years. I was rather surprised to have made it up there because the trail is suppoed to be closed. I was going to hike until I saw the barrier erected to close the trail (usually caution tape), but I never saw one. It's a steep trail. My heart rate was up to 140 BPM about 3/4 of the way up. I bought an Apple watch so I can keep track of things like that. I'm undergoing a process I call"debasketballification", which means "losing weight". Strenuous hikes are good for that.
The underbrush that has grown since the Eagle Creek Fire has blocked every place to set up a tripod near this waterfall, so I had to hold the camera over my head, and hope that I framed it right when I fired the shutter. Maybe in a few years, the stronger trees will have eliminated the competition enough to get a better view, and a longer exposure.

Rain is back in the Columbia Gorge a little early this year. It did not make it to Hood River, but I got rained on at Cascade Locks. The West could use a good soaking this year.
On the left is Saint Peter's Dome. It's a rock pinacle revealed by the Missoula Floods thousands of years ago. You can also see dome of the damage left by the Eagle Creek Fire of 2017.

This is from last April. We were out in the Columbia Gorge for some pictures. The clouds were dense, but there was clearing on the horizon. It was one of those rare days when the river was still, mirror-like, except for the occasion bird landing, or salmon jumping. I do miss living in the Gorge.

Sometimes, a sunset is so good that the foreground is immaterial. Sure, I won't trying to sell this picture, but it was one for the record books. I tried for a long time to fing a proper place to take the picture, but I was afraid that I would lose it, so I stopped along the road, and took this one. If the scene had allowed, I would have used a wider angle, and gotten more of it. Alas.

I was testing out a zoom lens from Blue Moon. I did not ultimately buy it, but it did take good pictures. It's a 35-70mm Nikon Zoom from the late 80's that was in remarkably good condition. It had a few strikes aganst it, though. One was that the zoom was reverse of the normal action. the longest focal length was where the lens was shortest actual length, which I did not think was possible. Also, the macro setting was at 35mm only. I prefer it to be at longer focal lengths. Still, it was not bad for the age.
Portland certainly has some beatuiful bridges.

The Toothrock Tunnel on I-84 in the Columbia Gorge as seen through my windshield a few weeks ago. The infrared camera sees through glass like nothing else.
Above is a segment of the Historic Columbia River Highway that was bypassed with this tunnel in the 30's, and then the tunnel was used for I-84 in the 1960's.

The maiden voyage of my new (old) Fujifilm GSW690III camera. I traveled to Sisters, Oregon with family, and stopped at this Crooked River overlook along the way. I had not been there since the mid 1990's. It was still just as spectacular, and the rusty, old car was still at the bottom of the ravine. A good time was had by all.

The place is called "Dismal Nitch". It was named by the Corps of Discovery led by Lewis and Clark when they were stuck there during a soggy week on the way to the Pacific. It was not so dismal when I took this picture, but I've seen it downright stormy.

Pandemic Apocalypse Photo Expedition into the neighborhood. I did this because I can’t go anywhere else. Seeing the world through a narrower field of vision can be kind of like writing a sonnet. Poets say (I have called myself a poet in the past, but I haven’t written many since college) that the rigid structure of a sonnet can bring out greater creativity because it forces one to think in different ways. I used the limits of the field of vision of the lems to edit out the houses on either side, to make it look like it’s not in suburbia.

After almost 24 years in a negative binder, I got this one out today. I wanted to see what I could do with it. The proof sheet looks bad. I thought that the picture had a large amount of lens flare at the top, so I never touched it. Today, I wanted to try something new. I scanned a light version and a dark version, and put them together as a HDR in Lightroom to see if I could eliminate enough of the flare to make a go of presenting it. When I looked at the results, I realized that it had just been a terrible proof sheet.
I then edited two versions: the HDR version and the darker version. I like the softness of the foggy area on the non-HDR version, so I scrapped the experiment, and when with the straight scan.

We drove out to Mosier to visit Idiot's Grace Winery (that's its real name) where we are wine club members. We took the long way there by turning onto the Historic Columbia River Highway from the Rowena exit from I-84 and zigzagging up to the Crest, and back down to Mosier. The light was effervescent.

Out on Route 35 near Hood River, there’s this little place is called Pine Grove. There’s another place in Oregon with the same name, and this one isn’t called that on a map. Anyway, it has this little butte that looks like and Earth zit. It's called the Van Horn Butte. I love taking pictures of it..

One from the archives. I took this in November of 2012 in the Columbia Gorge, Oregon. I have generally not photographed Multnomah Falls as often as I wanted to, because for years I did not have a lens wide enough to get the while thing on a piece of film. It’s also too damn busy. I solved the lens problem in 2008, but sometimes I still use a longer lens when the inclination strikes.
I tend to expose Ilford Ortho+ at 40 ASA for landscapes. They released it in roll film recently, and I have a few rolls.

Little Zigzag Creek comes down from Mt. Hood's glaciers. It is a glorious jumble of fallen trees, moss, ferns, and small waterfalls. It's becoming a go to place for me to drag along the cameras.
It was a bright, sunny day, which created bright highlights amid the shadows, and made photography a little more difficult. I managed to get some pictures through either underexposure, or bracketing.

We took a little stroll up the trail to Little Zigzga Falls on Monday, and I worked on getting some pictures of the waterfalls during some fairly extreme lighting conditions. I bracketed by 6 stops, but it still wasn't enough for some of the pictures. This one looks fairly nice.
