Trees of the Versatile Building during their first growing season.
In early 2013, 410 Silva Cell frames and 210 Silva Cell decks were installed outside of the Versatile Building on 3rd Street and Lonsdale Avenue in North Vancouver, British Columbia to support 10 new trees. The Silva Cell system also allows the trees and soil to manage stormwater on-site.

I walked past this area daily on my commute to the office in Kampala, where I was doing a renewable energy internship. The use of this space changed throughout the day – it was a football ground for people who came to play after work; a sports field for children from local schools during the day; a road for local ‘Boda Boda’ drivers who transported people and goods (pictured on the left of the photo); a grazing area for cattle and goats; a source of water for women and children who came to wash their clothes and collect water; a playing ground for children; and a pathway for people like me who were commuting to our offices. This photo is a reminder of how versatile a place can be.

The forest was created in the dunes between 1920 and 1935 by Staatsbosbeheer. To prevent the dunes from taking over the area, many different types of trees were planted. The Formerumerbos is therefore one of the most versatile forests on the Wadden Island.
