We grow our own vegetables because we can enjoy the fresh taste of sun-ripened varieties that you can not get in the stores and we can grow them without chemicals or additives.
There was a bountiful harvest of vegetables this year, including gourds! This pile was sitting on my daughter's front deck.
It's canning season and my kitchen table is littered with all the canning necessities from jars to veg. I love old mason jars. I have inherited some from both of my grandmothers and my grandfathers new wife (she didn't have any children), and my mother gave me a bunch of hers as well. It's interesting to think how many different things have been canned in these old jars through the years.
Today our friends came over and taught us how to make an authentic curry. Our eyes were all streaming ofter peeling all these onions, even the cat had tears in her eyes!

I’ve been spending a lot of time in the vegetable garden lately, and we are really reaping the rewards. Tonight we had steak, and along with it fresh salad, eggplant and sweet corn. All straight from the vege patch. And boy did it taste good. I’ve pretty well converted the kids to salad at last. Declan is now a real fan of “water lettuce”. I think he calls it that because I always wash & spin it first. The name has stuck. So long as he eats it I don’t care what he calls it. Add a little dash of my secret weapon to the salad, caramelised balsamic vinegar, and my previously fancy-salad-averse husband can’t get enough of it.

One of the more elegant vegetables. It's closely related to both brocolli and cauliflower and tastes a lot like the latter -- just a little sweeter and milder. I thought it looked rather well on the steamer.
