Bunch of Vegetables on a Cloth

Top view of diced vegetables stacked on a wooden chopping board

May 30, 2005 (Saturday) - We have given up on our former favourite vegetable and fruit shop called Kin's Market. Their prices kept increasing but the quality and variety kept diminishing. We now shop at a Langley Market up near the Burnaby / New Westminster border on Kingsway.

This is the first delivery of the organic vegetable box that I'm going to order weekly from now. The "single box" included all the things that are on the cutting board. Additionally I've ordered some eggs, beetroot (above the board) and "Bavarian Leberkäs". Everything was packed carefully by Natalia (as I am told on the bill).

Please correct me if I'm using the wrong English vocabulary - food terms is not really something you learn in school ;-)

I took this photo as a support study for my Junior Cert art project.

If someone had suggest a few weeks ago that this lot, juiced, would replace a coffee, milk and Rice Krispies I'd have thought they were crazy. But its true.

I didn't juice the avocado though - that went through the blender.

It's called "Lentil Salad", but over half of it is fresh summer vegetables: onions, carrots, fennel, radishes, cucumbers, celery, and bell pepper. I love this salad in the summer and can't imagine how sad it would be with winter vegetables.

Our Daily Challenge: SEASONAL FOOD

Had we but world enough, and time...

It does look engagingly like a large deciduous tree in full summer leafage. In supermarkets they sell this prechopped in plastic packets. It is a rather tough fibrous vegeatable. Kitchen knife skills are going the same way as kitchen cooking skills. We microwave industrially prepared meals and eat them on our knees while watching food porn on TV. Kitchens which still boast racks of expensive knives have them mostly for decoration. Stainless steel knives which look nicer and either can't hold a good edge or take ages to sharpen.

But the packs of prechopped kale go yellow and smelly quite quickly. The leaves last a bit longer. But a complete kale plant like this can be put in a jar of water to keep it fresh and a few of the bottom leaves cut off whenever you want them. This one is over a week old, we've eaten half of it, and it's still growing. But few places sell kale like this.

It's a particularly good vegetable in which to find many of the important nutritional components which get lost in the processes of industrial food profit making.

I don't think I've seen another vegetable with quite the same purple color as the cauliflower here.
