CCSF Photography and You:
Shortly after graduating from California College of Arts and Crafts with a MA in drawing, a couple quirky but intense life events unfolded in my life and I became spectacularly blocked.
I could not complete a drawing and was feeling frustrated by my entire process: figurative chalk pastel images of swimmers above and below the surface.
I was working from snap shots off a very basic point and shoot camera (film based as this was all pre-digital in the 1980’s) and reasoned
if I could have more control over the photo source, I could create more freely.
So I enrolled in beginner photo classes at City College.
After the pricey art school, I could not believe how thorough, supportive and creative City college courses were! I soon found I loved playing with the medium more than using it as a drawing source. For the next years, after learning the basics, I immersed myself in alternative processes, re-enrolling in so many classes and spending as much time as I could in the fabulous color print processing darkroom.
I learned so much from the students who were also experimenting as well and
will always miss this facility.
Now that film printing and especially color print development is marginalized,
I know how lucky I was to be part of it all at City.
It was amazing while it lasted and for that, I‘ll always be grateful.
