Over the last few days I've been trying to utilise every bit of space to make the chassis as structurally sound as possible, this involved redesigning the area under the cab which was just a solid block and was wasted space.

So just like I did with the earliest unpowered chassis block and tender I used this space properly to reinforce the powered chassis for a much stronger overall connection between the chassis and cab/boiler.

I also have managed to get the chassis to be nearly the perfect height so the connecting rods now almost completely center themselves with the slide rails of the cylinder just like the real loco. So now instead of being a plate and a quarter too low it is just a quarter of a plate too low, but at speed this will be barely noticeable.

The cylinder block was also shortened in length from its old design and lowered half a stud to make the chassis a plate lower overall as the chassis block was risen by half a plate, this is what created the full plate raise of the connecting rods giving this very close representation of the rod positioning of the real loco.

You'll notice that there are flanged wheels in the center, this was a test to see how the loco would look and I personally think it looks absolutely amazing with all flanged wheels, so this design was made in mind with having flanged center wheels which can be swapped out for blinds on official track, but honestly I like this look so much I may get some custom large radius track to run this loco on which hopefully should work with the spacing of the wheels and them all being flanged.

As you can see I finally got Stud.io to cooperate and show the BBB XL and bogie wheels so now I can make renders rather than take screenshots.

The Romans were already here and utilised the hot springs. They built a bridge over the river, the Ponte romana, creating an important communication route, which was of course secured by fortifications.

In the 5th century, Ourense became the seat of a bishopric. As the capital of the kingdom of the Suebi, Ourense flourished in the 5th and 6th centuries. The Suebi king Teodomiro († 570) built the first cathedral in Ourense after converting from Arianism to Catholicism.

Constant raids by the Moorish conquerors and the Normans devastated the city to such an extent that it remained almost uninhabited for several centuries. It was rebuilt in 1071 under King Sancho II of Castile. In the following centuries, the city gained importance as a bishop's see, but also as a trading centre. In the 13th century, Ourense was an important trading centre in Galicia due to its geographical location and its large Jewish community. The economic decline began after the expulsion of Ourense's Jews in 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs. In the centuries that followed, Ourense's importance steadily declined.

The earliest cathedral appears to have been a church dedicated to Santa María la Madre. In 550, the Suevian king Chararic built a second church here dedicated to St Martin of Tour. The cathedral was however repeatedly destroyed over the centuries by the Moors and the Northmen who invaded the city. Today's building was constructed as a Romanesque church in the 12th and 13th centuries. Gothic additions followed until the early 16th century. The consecration of the high altar was already in 1188.

3D printing has broken free of its novelty nature and is becoming the tool of choice to replace many traditionally complex and labour intensive tasks, thanks in no small part to the capabilities of the various materials now being commonly used.

Koenigsegg are currently using 3D printing technology to produce a variable speed turbo charger in stainless steel and currently use these in their production super-cars. These turbos proved difficult to cast using traditional methods, but by utilising an additive manufacturing process, these units are now printed with the internal parts completed within the unit at time of print.

NASA have successfully test fired a new 3D printed rocket-engine fuel injector. The injector replaced an earlier unit comprised of 115 different parts. The replacement 3D printed unit has 2 parts and is had only two parts and represents a simplified design which was not available using traditional manufacturing techniques.

Anecdotally these examples show how leaders in their respective fields are benefiting from the adoption of additive manufacturing techniques. Laser based 3D printing systems are now capable of working with various metals at commercial levels, including titanium, nickel, stainless steel, and aluminium to name but a few. Many of these metals suffer little in the way of tensile or yield strengths in comparison to the annealed counterparts.

When added to the high accuracy nylon available from laser based systems, and the plethora or materials available for use in FDM printing, some customers can find themselves facing a wider choice of materials than they may have expected. Highlights of FDM materials include compositions using carbon-fibre, titanium, cobalt, bronze and wood, as well as more traditional materials such as flexible rubber, low cost PLA and even some fully recycled filaments.

Stencils are an under-utilised and inexpensive supply that we often overlook. For example, with these Acorns And Leaves stencils, when the outline is traced with a pencil, it gives a great starting point for clean and simple watercolouring. The pencil outline is just as good as a stamped outline, yet the cost of the stencils is significantly reduced compared to a stamp set. I have another card on my blog showing this technique, too 😃

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°

With concerns over AI being misused, most companies are putting guardrails in place to curb the technology’s worst excesses.

Not so at Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) 🤔

X launched an updated version of its AI model Grok this week that comes with new image generation capabilities powered by FLUX.1.

Users quickly discovered there are little to no safeguards on the AI image generator. Some began making photos of a pregnant Kamala Harris with Donald Trump, Mickey Mouse on a killing spree, and Barack Obama doing cocaine …

Most AI image generators have protections in place to prevent users from making pictures of trademarked characters, real-life people, or illegal activities. OpenAI, for example, denies requests for images of a particular person or entity on its image generator DALL-E.

But Musk’s X is taking a different approach. The platform is being flooded with wild images of beloved characters like Pikachu and Goofy doing unspeakable things.

How long Musk’s gung-ho approach to AI images is anyone’s guess.

X is currently under investigation by the European Commission for potential violations of the Digital Safety Act.

While in the U.S., legislators are seeking ways to regulate deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation !!! 🤔

TRUMP'S AMERICA LAST

BUDGET APOLLO = 16 101 368, CSM = 3 443 874, LM = 2 007 000.

The lunar module or LM (Lunar Module) is the space vehicle used (1961-1972) to land on the moon with two crew members of the Apollo vessel, scientific equipment, to allow them to stay from two to four days before taking off to join the command and service module (CSM) remained in lunar orbit and responsible for bringing the crew back to Earth. The design and construction of the lunar module was carried out under the supervision of the Grumman aerospace company between 1962 and 1969. Fifteen lunar modules were built, ten of which flew and six landed on lunar soil during the period 1969-1972. The lunar module of the Apollo 13 mission saved the crew by replacing the failed Command and Service Module. The lunar module's cockpit housed all the controls needed to maneuver the vehicle during descent, ascent and docking. The command post was on the left, the LM pilot on the right. All critical instruments were duplicated in two positions or accessible to both astronauts. The optical alignment telescope centered above the flight station was an essential part of the LM's guidance and navigation system. By comparing the angles and distances between the stars, the astronauts were able to determine the precise position of the LM in space. This life-size replica of a LM cockpit was one of the many aircraft used by Apollo crews during mission preparations. Known as the LM Trainer, the device is equipped with displays and controls identical to those of a real LM. Astronauts trained with a special jet capable of simulating low gravity conditions. The lunar module was so small that the astronauts were flying it upright. At a height of 7 meters, the LM Apollo surprises with its imposing size and iconic aesthetics. The two astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin have almost never taken off again to join the command module remained in orbit (where the third astronaut, Michael Collins was waiting for them). After their lunar exit, they returned to the LEM and removed their very cumbersome suit. One of the astronauts then broke the button on the dashboard to start the engine of the machine! Fortunately, Aldrin had a pen in his suit. The two astronauts did some DIY and pushed the pen where the button was to activate the command. " With an initial cost of 8 billion ($), Apollo will finally reach 20 billion (price in the year 2000). Part on the hats of wheel, the budget given to NASA for Apollo will grow as early as 1964 and peaked until 1967. The final cost will be in fact the double ... BUDGET APOLLO = 16 101 368, CSM = 3 443 874, LM = 2,007,000.

This is the Donside Village Hydro Turbine located within the nature reserve , I've taken some info from their website on the story behind the project to install and utilise the turbine to produce HydroElectricity.

The micro hydro scheme is located at a bend of the River Don, at the edge of the former papermill which is now being re-developed for a variety of other purposes, including residential housing, with the riverside being developed by the community for recreational use and wildlife value.

The land for the hydro was secured from the landowner and developer, Sanctuary Group, by the community for the generation of renewable energy.

By short-cutting this bend in the river, the hydro makes use of the gradually sloping river bed that falls over a depth of about 2.5m and covers a distance of 200m. The hydro scheme will be fed by a new lade and make full extent of the natural fall by cutting across the bend.

A feasibility study indicated that the site has the potential to generate about 400kW of power but under the current government energy subsidy regime (Feed-in-Tariff ) a scale of 100kW is the most economically feasible.

Donside Village has an enviable location on the banks of the River Don approximately 4km from the city centre of Aberdeen. It is on the site of the former Donside Papermill in the wider Tillydrone community. The papermill occupied the site until its closure in 2001 and demolition in 2006.

The site has been, and continues to be re-developed into a sustainable mixed community one of the UK’s largest Registered Social Landlords; Sanctuary Housing.

Inside the original boundary of the former papermill, new modern energy efficient flats and houses have been built, with a mix of social housing, part buy and owner occupied properties. The properties overlook the river which will be designed and landscaped by the community as an amenity for people and wildlife from the local community and beyond.

This community is known as Donside. It is represented by the Donside Community Association, made up of the residents and friends of Donside Village.

Hydroelectricity involves the conversion of energy stored in water held at a height as it travels to a lower level. The flow of water drives a mechanical shaft which then drives an electric generator.

The vertical fall of the water, known as the head, is essential for hydropower generation. Fast-flowing water on its own does not contain sufficient energy for useful power production.

Aberdeen Community Energy have purchased and installed a Landustrie Hydropower Screw Turbine for the Donside Hydro.

Utilisée comme couverture végétale entre les cultures, cette plante contribue à l'enrichissement du sol, au désherbage naturel et à la lutte contre l'érosion des sols. Elle résiste aux légers gels et est aussi une plante méllifère.

Aviation Memories

Continuing Year 2020 with a dip into the written archives :)

Another page from one of my school note books - what a useful way of utilising what we called our 'Rough Books' - I was an early adopter of Recycling :)

I had just turned 14 years of age, and I was looking to expand my portfolio of hobbies! I had already been indoctrinated into the world of bus spotting and train spotting by my older brother, but he never had an interest in aviation. It was my school mates at senior school who encouraged me to visit Heathrow - a mere 4 miles from where I lived in Southall! I was quickly hooked, and the interest never really went away, although it waned by the early 1990s when all the best aircraft had disappeared :(

Some comments on the sightings

Sat 10th Dec 1977 - A visit to Heathrow

One of many Saturdays that I spent at London Heathrow as a teenager - such variety we had in the 1970s!

Star player - 5-8541 Imperial Iranian Air Force Lockheed C-130H Hercules :)

A pair of Aeroflot Tu-154s was unusual CCCP-85088 was a regular, CCCP-85182 was a rarer machine

OH-LSD Finnair Caravelle was also a visitor, operating a Kar Air charter flight (KR3657)

Malev brought in one of their superb looking Ilyushin Il-18s HA-MOE instead of the usual Tupolev

Looking at the rest, it's possible that we had some Gatwick diversions (hence the pair of Aeroflots) as we had G-BFBZ Laker / Caribbean Boeing 707 and G-APYD Dan Air Comet (a real rarity for Heathrow :)

On top of that lot, we had a load of nice light & biz:

EC-CTV (TM.11-4) Mystere 20 Spanish AF

OH-PNT Pa-31 Cheyenne

+ HB-VEX, D-IANY,

Finally, we had some RAF Wessex helicopters visiting:

XV723 AQ, XT670 AU as well as BA and BB.

'Aircraft spotting or plane spotting is a hobby of tracking the movement of aircraft, which is often accomplished by photography. Besides monitoring aircraft, aircraft spotting enthusiasts (who are usually called plane spotters) also record information regarding airports, air traffic control communications and airline routes.'

Royal Marines Winter Deployment 2022

hore Reconnaissance Team (SRT) from 30 Commando’s Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadron (SRS) conducting beach surveys to and live firing during Winter Deployment 22.

SRT carried out a covert swim insertion from ship to shore utilising the Inflatable Raiding Craft (IRC) to carry out critical beach reconnaissance deep inside the Arctic Circle.

The team then conducted live break contact drills once ashore on the beaches of Ramsund. These drills enable the small teams to disengage rapidly from enemy forces and regain their covert posture. Royal Marines have deployed to Northern Norway to carry out their annual winter deployment in the Arctic Circle.

Commandos will refresh skills in surviving, moving, and fighting across the ice.

This year, Royal Navy ships will join Royal Marines for the large-scale NATO exercise Cold Response 22.

This takes place in March and April with 28 nations and a total of 35,000 troops already committed to attending the exercise.

Only utilising half of its original floor space, and even now only for the NX panel that has been in situ for around 25 years, the box is still standing despite the steady march of ROC progress.

There has been talk of a new line coming up from the docks to join Chat Moss route where the old Barton Moss signalbox was but how much progress has been made on that I'm not sure.

ENGLISH :

Here are the flowers and the leaves. This plant grows to about 1 m high and looks like a succulent.

"Apple of Sodom"

Apple of Sodom , Calotropis procera , silk tree or commonly " tree balls " is a small tree that is commonly found in desert areas of Africa and the Middle East . Its green fruits resemble to small oval apples, testes according to some, hence the inelegant nickname. In ripens , the fruit can grow up to 10 cm in diameter. Hollow , they contain silky filaments.

His presence is surprising because the tree appears in the middle of nowhere and its large leaves are thriving , while his colleagues gleefully played by goats, camels and other animals.

This has an explanation : the apple of Sodom is toxic , including the latex containing calotropin a cardiac poison once used to make poison arrows ! Sometimes, however, when the leaves are dry cattle ingests a small amount !

But this small tree also has its virtues , among others the wood resistant to termites and ants, used in the composition of the roof of some houses , or sunken branches, in which the bees lay their larvae and honey to provide Tuareg ...
