Qube is beginning a trial utilising three 1100 class locos on their 1311/3112 series between Harefield and Botany, the question being whether they have the fuel capacity to complete a round trip.

It is believed that this is the first time triple 1100s have worked together on the southern line.

=============================================== //

For centuries the Rabelo boat was used in the Douro River to transport wines, and people, from the Douro region to Vila Nova de Gaia / Porto - PORTUGAL. Its use was stopped in the XX century, around the 60s.

The Douro was a river of "hard sailing" thus there were countless shipwrecks and lives lost. The crew members were called "sailors" to clearly illustrate the dangers of the job.

The remaining Rabelos are moored at the pier in Vila Nova de Gaia and are now used to advertise various Port brands, which are clearly visible in their sails.

By initiative of the Confraria do Vinho do Porto (Port Wine Brotherhood), since 1983, in the popular celebrations of São João (St. John) on June 24th, is held a regatta with Rabelos starting at Foz do Douro until the bridge D. Luís (Gaia / Porto). In the first edition there were only 4 boats, currently 20 to 22 boats participate in the race. These pictures were taken in the regatta of 24 June 2015

The only double decker in the fleet to wear Brookline colours was utilised on route 479 during the school half term to allow the resident Wrightbus StreetLite some much needed maintenance having almost been exclusively used since the company started the route at the start of September 2025.

Looking extremely smart and I believe its first day in use on non-school journeys, Brookline BJ11 EBO is seen on Green Street Green Road near Lane End whilst working route 479. Monday 27th October 2025.

Grassmarket is a historic market in Edinburgh's Old Town. It was first mentioned in the Registrum Magni Sigilii Regum Scotorum (1363) as "the street called Newbygging (literally: new buildings) under the castle". It was, from 1477, one of the main market areas of the city. It was used as a market from the 14th century, with cattle fairs, horse fairs and corn bought and sold in its large open space. Its name "Grassmarket" comes from the time when grass was stored there in large quantities to feed the animals in the market. From around 1660, the Grassmarket became the favorite place to hang the city's criminals, with the story of Maggie Dickson gaining particular notoriety. Half-Hingit Maggie has become so famous that there is a pub named after her in the Grassmarket (halfway up the north side). Maggie Dickson, or "Half-hangit Maggie" as she was known, was a fishmonger who was tried and convicted for the murder of her newborn baby in 1724. Well known at the time for being a troublemaker, she reportedly had a passionate affair with a much younger man in 1723. Shortly after, an Edinburgh fisherman reported that he had found the drowned naked body of a newborn baby dumped on the banks of the River Tweed. The Courts of Edinburgh found Maggie guilty and sentenced her to death in 1724. As the cart passed through the streets of Edinburgh's Old Town, two carpenters heard frantic banging and screaming coming from inside his coffin. They immediately opened the coffin and to their amazement, the gasping Maggie Dickson miraculously stood up screaming, terrifying all who saw her. As the law at the time had been enforced and Maggie's punishment had been carried out, Edinburgh officials had no choice but to release her. Whether his resurrection was a case of divine intervention or an incorrect medical diagnosis will never be known! She lived 25 years after being "executed" on the gallows, and she became the infamous owner of a beer house until her final death in 1753.

Place of public executions, it is on Grassmarket that a small commemorative monument is drawn up in 1937, at the place where was the scaffold, place of hanging of the Covenanters as well as those accused of theft and witchcraft. In the 1680s, over a hundred people were executed at the Grassmarket for their religious faith. It was the time of the Covenanters, a Protestant religious group dedicated to protecting their Presbyterian faith from interference by the king. The government saw them as rebels and tried to eradicate the movement. The Grassmarket was the scene of one of Edinburgh's most notorious riots, in September 1736. Earlier that year two popular smugglers, Wilson and Robertson, were sentenced to death. As Wilson was cut off from the gallows, the crowd began throwing rocks and the city guard opened fire, killing 16 people, including a small boy watching the scene from a building window. John Porteous, the captain of the guard, was tried and found guilty of murder, but as he had many friends at court, a pardon seemed likely. Many people were angry at what they were taking to interfere with their legal process, and they stormed Tolbooth Jail where Porteous was being held. The mob found the captain hiding in a fireplace, and he was dragged to the Grassmarket where he was hung from a dyer's pole. In the early 20th century, the Grassmarket was home to so many Italian immigrants that it became known as 'Little Italy'... The most popular jobs were musicians and ice cream vendors, both of which could be peddled in the streets. Ice cream was served straight from the wheelbarrows with shouts of "Gelati, ecco un poco", and so to the locals they became known as the "Hokey Pokey men". To the east of The Grassmarket you will find a small roundabout and roads that lead to Cowgate and Candlemaker Row. The Cowgate Road goes under the George IV Bridge, but after that point there's not much to see other than a few pubs (Brewdog is half a mile up the road if you have a preference for beers Scottish crafts). Candlemaker Row, on the other hand, leads uphill to Greyfriars Kirk which has its own fascinating history and is also the final resting place of Greyfriars Bobby, the loyal Scotts terrier. Due to the overpowering stench that was created during the candle making process (they used animal fat at the time), Edinburgh candle makers were banned outside the Old Town limits in the area that eventually took its name from the craftsmen who worked there. The most significant building is Candlemakers Hall which was built in 1722 and backs onto Greyfriars Kirk. It is also where you can find one of the few remaining sections of the Flodden Wall - the 16th century stone wall which was built after the Scots were defeated at the Battle of Flodden in 1513.

PWM stands for Plant Water Management. A novel way to use hydroponics to grow plants in space – no earth (lower case 😉) required! As demonstrated here by Mark (who has great pedagogical skills), and me (who was not very awake apparently 😜). Growing plants and food in space is important as fresh food has the most vitamins and is healthiest. We have made great progress growing crops in weightlessness where nothing is easy. How do you get food into the plant roots in an environment where their is no soil, no rain and even if there was it would float all around! Hydroponics is the answer in this experiment where everything a plant needs is "injected" straight to the roots, the red fluids you can see. Researchers compare results with control studies on Earth to prepare for longer voyages farther into our Solar System. www.nasa.gov/feature/glenn/2021/project-examines-how-to-w...

Monkton Farleigh ammunition depot utilised an old stone quarry below a plateau some 450 feet above the valley floor in which ran the main line railway that was its principal source of supply. Before the depot could be commissioned, an efficient means was need to bring in ammunition from the railway at Farleigh Down Sidings. The sidings were just over a mile from the depot as the crow flies but more than four miles by road along steep and tortuous country lanes.

In November 1937 the Great Western Railway were contracted to lay the sidings and build a 1000 foot long raised loading platform complete with a narrow gauge track to carry the ammunition wagons. Outline plans had already been prepared to drive a mile long tunnel from the heart of the workings terminating in an underground sorting yard built beneath the sidings in the valley below.

These photographs, taken in January 2016, showcase the building as it stands today.

Inspiration for the framing of the shots came from the 1975 New Topographics exhibition.

For her exhibition at the Matmut – Daniel Havis Contemporary Art Centre, Maia Flore brings together two essential components of life: laughter and dreams. Her photographs, created from memories and impressions, take us into the artist’s imagination. A teeming imagination filled with mischief and poetry. Maia Flore uses photography as her main medium, which she highlights through the practice of drawing and collage. Like a visual storyteller, the artist transforms reality and magnifies the simple things that surround us. A sunset, a tree in bloom or even a sky on a full moon night: discovering Maia Flore’s work is allowing yourself to dream…and laugh at a little nothing! The photographer draws inspiration from what surrounds her to create her compositions, sometimes digitally. A bit surreal, they are often tinged with humor. Maia Flore takes everyday situations and turns them into comical stagings in which she is the main actress. The place of the body is at the heart of her images: it is always in motion, levitating, graceful, sometimes even merging with its environment. However, the artist hides her face so that the viewer can better identify with the character in her photographs. The exhibition itinerary highlights Maia Flore's metaphorical work, which skillfully navigates between the real world and the imaginary world, leaving room for a visual intimacy that unites the human body and the landscape. By exploring the galleries of the art center, visitors are transported into a captivating and amusing dreamlike dream.

French photographer Maia Flore, born in 1988, oscillates between France and the United States. Fresh out of the Gobelins school, she became a member of the Vu agency in 2010 and received the HSBC Photography Prize in 2015. The various residencies in which she participated and international exhibitions have led her to travel from Rio to Rome, or from Moscow to Buenos Aires.
