► █░▓ ≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈ THE BUSIEST INLAND WATERWAY OF EUROPE utilised here by the inland cruiser 'Viking Magni'. This passenger ship, ferry and cruise ship is sailing under the flag of Switzerland and is now in Germany, under way to Budapest. Her draught is 1,7 m. I noticed just a few passengers on board, in spite of a very nice, warm day.
It takes some strong surge of imagination to think of a pontoon bridge built at this very place some time ago, for the purpose of the military training, bringing all the river traffic to a complete halt. This pier stands in the unused shallows close to the left bank (just 1 m deep here). The one close to the right bank was clearly standing in much deeper water where it posed a peril for the vessels passing by. So it has been removed around 20 years ago.
Most ships here use the other side (closer to me) when going upstream, but my hunch is that she's going to pick up her passengers in nearby harbour and therefore getting ready on that side of the river. VIKING MAGNI is approaching "Vreugdenhil Dairy Foods" (Nestlé) milk powder factory, with many a container here at display ready for shipping. I would love to pass by and see it so close from the river.

WIKIPEDIA :
The hamsa is a palm-shaped amulet popular throughout the Middle East and North Africa and commonly used in jewelry and wall hangings.[1][2] Depicting the open right hand, an image recognized and used as a sign of protection in many times throughout history, the hamsa is believed by some, predominantly Muslims and Jews, to provide defense against the evil eye. It has been theorized that its origins lie in Ancient Egypt or Carthage (modern-day Tunisia) and may have been associated with the Goddess Tanit.
(Wikipedia)

I was intrigued by the mineral water bottle embedded in the rock alongside the East Lyn River between Lynmouth and Watersmeet in North Devon. It is a memorial to the Lynrock Mineral Water Factory opened by the Attree brothers at the location in 1911. The water came from a nearby freshwater spring and is reputed to have been mildly radioactive. The brothers utilised the power of the East Lyn River to drive their bottling machine.
The factory closed in 1939 due to a lack of demand. Most of the abandoned building was washed away during the 1952 Lynmouth flood disaster although a single fireplace and mantelpiece are still visible alongside the footpath today.
Moss and lichen cling to the rock around the bottle and indeed are common alongside this stretch of the East Lyn River. I understand such organisms are a good indicator of clean air.

Jean-François Ortmans was an industrialist specializing in dyeing and was Mayor of Verviers from 1855 to 1885. His name is also linked to the construction of the Gileppe Dam and the creation of the distribution of industrial and household water. , dating from 1893, is the work of Clément Vivroux. He used various materials such as freestone, bronze and limestone. It is 15 meters high and 13 meters wide. On the pediment, the town of Verviers, represented by a lady, stands next to a lion (symbol of strength). The lady is holding a piece of cloth in her right hand (evoking the city's textile industry). We can see two commemorative slabs: • on the left “1878, Ortmans Hauzeur distributes water from the Gileppe” • on the right “To Bourgmestre Ortmans Hauzeur 1854-1885, his grateful fellow citizens”. The freestone base is interrupted by sculpted bands imitating water curtains. One of the headbands imitates waves. There are elements reminiscent of water: • sculpted seashells • a very large seashell behind the bust of Jean-François Ortmans • an amphora on each side. The bottom of the monument evokes the distribution of water and the role that played Jean-François Ortmans in the development of local industry. Five basins receive the water discharged through a pipe located under the pedestal. This monument was erected on the gable end of a dwelling house which has certain decorative elements identical to the fountain.

It seems the paint over the letters is fading away. Maybe we'll be able to read the text in several more years ;-)

For centuries the Rabelo boat was used in the Douro River to transport wines, and people, from the Douro region to Vila Nova de Gaia / Porto - PORTUGAL. Its use was stopped in the XX century, around the 60s.
The Douro was a river of "hard sailing" thus there were countless shipwrecks and lives lost. The crew members were called "sailors" to clearly illustrate the dangers of the job.
The remaining Rabelos are moored at the pier in Vila Nova de Gaia and are now used to advertise various Port brands, which are clearly visible in their sails.
By initiative of the Confraria do Vinho do Porto (Port Wine Brotherhood), since 1983, in the popular celebrations of São João (St. John) on June 24th, is held a regatta with Rabelos starting at Foz do Douro until the bridge D. Luís (Gaia / Porto). In the first edition there were only 4 boats, currently 20 to 22 boats participate in the race. These pictures were taken in the regatta of 24 June 2015

Concrete mixer (2010) is a model of a truck mounted truck mixer, respecting the Gothic style constituting one of the most iconic themes used by the artist Wim Delvoye in his work. It recalls one of the first works to have conferred on Delvoye an international reputation, a large format sculpture bearing the same name carved in teak (completed in 1999 after nine months of work) and other more recent structures such as Tower (2010), a traveling sculptor having been exhibited in Venice, Paris and Brussels and to which Delvoye added a new floor to each event.
Remarkably realized in laser-cut stainless steel, Bétonnière captures both the durable nature of the vehicle it inspires and the delicacy and splendor of the architecture from which it draws its inspiration, embodying the opposition The reputation of Delvoye's work.

Zeebrugge_Anne_Duk_Hee_JordanAnne Duk Hee Jordan used a large erratic block for his installation. The erratic rocks are not native to our country: they were brought there. During the last ice age, the Saalian glaciation, about 200,000 BC, these rocks were brought by glaciers that moved from Scandinavia to the Netherlands. Stones were also transported from the twelfth to the fifteenth century. At that time, many foreign rocks arrived in Bruges via the Hanseatic route, a trade route linking Estonia to France, on which the city was located. They were used to build monuments, churches and tombs.
The stone is suspended between two buoys and seems carried by a net. This type of buoy is used to help boats navigate to their destination. A little as if the stone, after infinite wanderings, had finally reached its destination. This illogical construction, due to the heaviness of the stone and the lightness of the net, creates a tension between observation and reality. It also calls the question of how this rock came to this place. In the context of a natural migration or by a recent transport, by human beings? Because of her special position, she seems to have her own personality. The stone is a silent witness, which observes the human activity. It reminds us of the transience of human life, even though it is immortal.
