East Lyn River, North Devon

I was intrigued by the mineral water bottle embedded in the rock alongside the East Lyn River between Lynmouth and Watersmeet in North Devon. It is a memorial to the Lynrock Mineral Water Factory opened by the Attree brothers at the location in 1911. The water came from a nearby freshwater spring and is reputed to have been mildly radioactive. The brothers utilised the power of the East Lyn River to drive their bottling machine.

The factory closed in 1939 due to a lack of demand. Most of the abandoned building was washed away during the 1952 Lynmouth flood disaster although a single fireplace and mantelpiece are still visible alongside the footpath today.

Moss and lichen cling to the rock around the bottle and indeed are common alongside this stretch of the East Lyn River. I understand such organisms are a good indicator of clean air.
