Pochards used to be a very common wintering species in Britain with large autumn influxes from Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Russia. But our milder winters are causing Pochards to short-stop en route, and our winter numbers have crashed. Between 1984 and 2011 its winter range contracted by an unbelievable 21% and the overall population is down by 50%.
This one is a breeding bird, and it is quite a scarce breeding bird with only about 500 pairs. For comparison Golden Eagle has 440 pairs. And the plant in the background is all Mare's Tail (Hippuris vulgaris) which is a flowering aquatic plant, not to be confused with Horsetails (Equisetum spp).
The name Pochard is an ancient variant of Poker or Poacher, which was almost certainly used for another species of duck that feeds by poking its bill in the ground. Poaching has an alternative meaning of probing and land that has been churned up by livestock feet is known as poached. In America Poacher is a name given to (American) Wigeon, which does appear to feed by poking (or poaching) the ground. Pochards invariably feed by diving underwater so are not poking or poaching ducks.
I used the mini go-pro tripod for this, and my Nikon in sunset mode. This is much clearer than the hand held photo from last night.

This picture is for the theme “Yo-yo” in the Blythe a Day group on Flickr. That’s my husband’s yo-yo, which he nicely let me borrow.
A long time ago… in galaxies far far away, the first stars were born in the early universe. But when and how? That’s a mystery Webb is one step closer to solving.
Using Webb, researchers have found two early galaxies that are unusually bright, one of which could contain the most distant starlight ever seen. The galaxies are thought to have existed 350 and 450 million years after the big bang (respectively, from top to bottom). Unlike our Milky Way, these first galaxies are small and compact, with spherical or disk shapes rather than grand spirals.
Webb’s new findings suggest that the galaxies would have had to begin coming together about 100 million years after the big bang — meaning that the first stars might have started forming in such galaxies around that time, much earlier than expected.
Follow-up observations with Webb’s spectrographs will confirm the distances of these primordial galaxies and help us learn more about the earliest stars. More: www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2022/nasa-s-webb-draws-back-...

This is an older picture, before a friend found me five more in Japan! I love these things! If you click on the picture you can see it larger on black. You may notice the green seems bumpy, that is because it is a "hammered metal" effect spray paint, it looks great in person. The blue one may also seem bumpy, but that is because I painted it multiple times, (primer, 2 or 3 coats of paint and top coat for each color). I just couldn't get it right. The color blue is now on a new one and looks perfect. The blue one in the pic is what I call "broken" and became my tester for colors, it literally has around 30 layers of primer, paint and top coats on it. It's not a mixer so much as a blob now. ;)
I used spray paint to paint these (with a primer and gloss top coat from the same brand as the color). For the detail work I used masking tape to make the lines and then used silver and black paint pens.
These are from #7 Stitch Cooking. This set is not sold out at the moment, I don't know why they are so hard to find. My friend in Japan found me five in one day, but that was around eight or nine months ago.

I used to be an avid Chess player, but as I gotten older and my being a physician took over most of my brain (trust me, not much space up there), I haven't played a game in years.
My dad found one of my older Chess boards, complete with all the pieces, and gave it to me just for keeps.

Using ND1000 ten stop filter with sigma 10-20mm at F12 with 25 seconds exposure. ND4 grad filter used for sky (hand held as couldn't be arsed)

Butterflies use their antennae to sense the air for wind and scents. The antennae have clubbed-tips. The sensory receptors are concentrated in the tips and can detect odor's.
Taste receptors are located on the palps and on the feet. Adult butterflies consume only liquids, ingested through the proboscis as they sip water and feed on nectar from flower. The proboscis is elongated and tubular expands when needed to feed and curls up at rest.
Butterflies are brightly colored flying insects with four wings that vary in color and pattern according to species, the wings are covered with tiny overlapping rows of scales.
Butterflies in their adult stage can live from a week to nearly a year depending on the species.
Butterflies are important as pollinators, although in general they do not carry as much pollen as bees. They are however capable of moving pollen over greater distances.
Butterflies are widely used as objects of art in jewelry, artwork, furnishings and photographic art. A famous illustration was in Alice in Wonderland, the caterpillar seated on a toadstool and is smoking a hookah.

They sed I cud do it today cuz it's easy an' I'd finnish it kwik. Well they wuz rite, I finnished it in dubble kwik time!
Its me birfday tomorro so I'm be'avin' meself rite now... I fink they smuggled in me pressies earlier so I'm off to 'ave a nose around before bed..."

Using a little fill flash here softened with the translucent dome cap turned 90 degrees out, then shooting just off angle to the sun. This is my eldest daughter back from a year in Spain.
If you are wondering how I was able to take this capture using the lens wide open and the fill flash (which really works best below 1/200 second) ... achieved that using the 6 & 4 Stop ND filters to get the shutter speed where I wanted with the light varying in the scenes for the portraits.
Here the fill flash setting was around -1eV as well, to limit the fill light and make it look more natural.

La zona, posta a metà strada tra la montagna e la pianura e punto di passaggio per raggiungere il Friuli, fu da sempre un sito strategico. Attorno al X secolo fu eretta una fortezza controllata dai vescovi di Belluno, ma di probabili origini romane. Lo stesso toponimo sembra derivare dal latino cuniculus indicante i passaggi sotterranei del castello[6].
Conegliano "nacque" però nel XII secolo, quando un gruppo di famiglie nobili si organizzò creando un governo di tipo comunale attorno alla bastia, con la conseguente formazione di un borgo. Il Castello di Conegliano rimase sempre il centro del potere, sia civile (con la sede della podesteria) che religioso (con la collegiata di San Leonardo). Le attività artigianali ed agricole furono incentivate dalla fondazione di numerosi monasteri: Santa Maria in Mater Domini (1231), il convento dei Padri Umiliati di San Polo (1316), Sant'Antonio, San Francesco dei Frati Minori (1231), per non parlare degli ospizi e delle congregazioni di laici.
Con il sanguinoso assalto del 1153, Conegliano fu però subito sottomessa al comune di Treviso che ne potenziò le difese, ricostruendo il castello, vista la posizione chiave verso il Friuli con i domini del Patriarcato di Aquileia. La cittadina seguì le sorti della Marca e passò agli Ezzelini e agli Scaligeri, che la munirono di nuove fortificazioni. Anche con la Repubblica di Venezia, a cui Treviso passò nel 1337, e la breve parentesi dei Carraresi (1384-1388) l'opera fu continuata e venne innalzata una cinta muraria che racchiudesse il borgo. I lavori di fortificazione e di ampliamento si protrassero anche nei secoli successivi, nonostante il rovinoso attacco degli Ungari del 1411. Il paese si abbellì anche di palazzi signorili e istituzionali ma la decadenza si fece sentire già dopo la guerra della Lega di Cambrai.
Nel Settecento il castello, già da tempo in rovina, fu in gran parte demolito per fornire materiale di recupero utile alle nuove costruzioni, tra cui il Palazzo Comunale (1744).
Come tutto il Veneto, la città passò a Napoleone e infine agli Austriaci che ne svilupparono l'economia e le infrastrutture. Con la costruzione della Strada Maestra d'Italia e della ferrovia (1858) il centro vitale del paese si spostò più a sud, attorno alla stazione. Nel 1866 passò con tutto il Veneto al Regno d'Italia. Nel 1917, dopo la Disfatta di Caporetto, Conegliano fu occupata dagli Imperi Centrali e subì notevoli danni. La città riuscì successivamente a risollevarsi grazie alle ferventi attività economiche (prodotti caseari, vinicoli, officine meccaniche ecc.).

Goldcrest, Holding the Light - I couldn’t reach the snow-covered Bradgate I had imagined.But I went anyway.
A cold, sunlit morning. No coffee. A longer walk than planned.
Goldcrests stayed mostly hidden, refusing the perfect flight I had in mind — yet they gave me presence.
The deer crossed my path with quiet urgency, carrying winter on their backs.
I returned home tired, cold, and strangely light.
Some mornings don’t give you what you plan —
they give you what you need.

Helsinki Central railway station (Finnish: Helsingin päärautatieasema, Swedish: Helsingfors centralstation) is a widely recognised landmark in central Helsinki, Finland, and the focal point of public transport in the Greater Helsinki area. The station is used by approximately 200,000 passengers per day, making it Finland's most-visited building. It serves as the point of origin for all trains in the local VR commuter rail network, as well as for a large proportion of long-distance trains in Finland. The station also hosts the Rautatientori metro station, which is the busiest station of the Helsinki Metro.

I used my two Yongnuo YN-560 + RF-602 + Nikon D5100 + Sigma 70-300mm Macro.
I have to admit that the big drop in the middle is from a second shot. Without that it would be hard to recognize the effect and therefore I placed it there.

I used a Schneider Kreuznach Xenar 1:2.8/50 lens with a 39mm thread for the Braun Paxette rangefinder on a KMZ Zenit 3M SLR, which also has a M39 mount. As the Zenit has a larger flange distance than the Paxette, the lens automatically becomes a macro lens, but it cannot be focused to infinity.
The Xenar is Schneider's variant of the classic Tessar design - in my opinion one of the best ever.
