You have to admire a job that allows you to make a bumble-bee/owl (a bumblowl?) fly around a mural merely by waving your finger... all while drinking beer.
This is an elaboration on my actionscript webcam motion detection experiments, built as an installation for the Inverge party hosted by North. The idea was to take motion detection and combine it with art in the form of digital drawing and 2d space in the form of a wall mural. The concept is to allow human interaction to affect physical space, freeing oneself from all traditional user interface. The application works by constantly monitoring a webcam, taking snapshots of each frame every millisecond. The pixels in the current frame are compared to pixels in the previous. The difference in brightness within each section determines whether or not motion had occurred in this area of the screen. If motion is detected the coordinates of a rectangular grid around said motion is recorded and the owl is ordered to go to that point. The line drawings begin and follow the owl recording a 'flight path'. A mask is drawn to prevent the owl and its drawing trail from going in front of some of the trees giving the mural a sense of dimension.
Thanks to the great Eric Natzke for the drawing inspiration and open source, and NORTH for being forward thinking enough to encourage digital experimentation.

Dean Allen is looking for donations for a new camera and I thought I'd help out.
You ever accidentally choose a different language at an ATM and go through with it anyway? You stumble through the menus based on where you remember the buttons being and you eventually get 40 bucks out but you're lost the entire way.
Using paypal in french is just like that.

Part of my proposed redesign of JS Bin.
The idea here is that, when a user is typing, we replace buttons with tips about keyboard commands.
I’ve illustrated two approaches here: teaching the user a couple at a time or just always showing all of them.

What happens when seperate networks collide? Personal/Friends + Friends + Professional networks often do not share the same value systems.
When broadcasting social messages and life-streams, it is important for systems to separate between different communication levels in order to provide the correct groups with the correct information.
If this is not followed, it becomes a liability for the user. The case of Facebook is probably the foremost case study here.

Pretty? I suppose. But why, even after breaking the data down into three pages does the Classic practically require a loupe to read?
I had forgotten how much I liked the 4G's click wheel.
(The Classic's brightness is set to 70% here. The others are maxed out.)
The table headers stay visible in the browser window as the user scrolls up and down a page to remind the user of what the columns in the table are.

After more than one and a half years of development, the world biggest multitouch multi-user wall has now been launched at Nürburgring.
The two-piece ring°wall consists of a LED display and a multitouch information-wall and impresses by its size: a total surface of 425 square meters, which equals more than 6000 computer displays, is the biggest of its kind. An interactive World emerges out of 34 million pixels generated by 15 high definition projectors and is supported by 30 directional speakers.
Multitouch sensors basing on laser technology, convert the usage of the natural user interface into an experience. By direct touching, more than 80 users can simultaneously get informed about news and activities around the ringworld.
The interactive wall is not only a central information system, but also an innovative advertising tool and medium for public viewings.

Google Finance's stock screener is a great example of Refining Search pattern. The tool allows user to search for stocks by using several different criteria: Average Price, Price Change, PE ratios, etc., and the user can easily add and remove search filters.
Things to notice:
-Sparklines, in this case histograms that indicate the weight proportions in each part of the range, are used. They help the user to refine the search.
-It is made easy to clear filters and start over.
-Results can be sorted.
-The number of results found is shown.
-In addition to filters a free text search is provided.

Each seat on Virgin America now includes a screen and keyboard with a special in-flight entertainment system that includes movies, TV, a live route map, seat-to-seat chat, etc. They really missed some strong opportunities for in-flight social networking and games but it's a promising start.
This is a view of the live routemap.
Pop quiz: you're on your way out from a meeting at a client's office - which button do you press in the elevator to get to the exit on the ground level? Is it "E", is it "1", or perhaps "K" or why not "0"?
Right answer: 2
And whatever happened to floor number 7? Is the 8th floor just floating up there?
Obviously "E" is one floor below the street level, "1" is two floors below street level, "K" is three floors below and "0" is 4 levels below...
The idea of grouping windows together as tabs in the title bar is a good one, but the implementation in Safari 4 is flawed. The two biggest issues I have:
1. The duplication of the close button. There is no need for a button to close all of the tabs in the window.
2. The "Create a new tab" button on the right side is completely unnecessary. There's no such thing as a new window button in Safari, right?
My idea is based around adding window grouping (AKA tabbing) to the OS and to have the close/minimize/zoom controls attach to the current tab. Of course, this idea is just as flawed since the behavior for minimize and zoom would be unpredictable.
Any ideas?
