HMM… the them for today, 4/23 the day after earth day, is plastic. how smart to cause us think about how we use plastics and more importantly what we do when we’re done with them or how can we cut down the useage of the one-time use things that litter our oceans and our lands.
Trees are so cool. They provide homes for wildlife, produce oxygen, shelter, fuel, and support drainage amongst many other useful things. They also are fun to photograph, changing constantly throughout the year. Thank you trees :)
A useful grey leaved clump forming plant but the clumps will expand somewhat if not checked occasionally.
I wish you well in whatever way is most appropriate for you but cannot take on the extra work of writing it to you individually. Thank you for your good wishes and to those who have made me their contact. Due to poor health, eye problems and low energy I regret I can't take on any new contacts but nearly always manage to reply to your comments. Please no more than 1 invite.

I loved to make this photo. I needed something difficult enough to make myself feel challenged and doing this shot really was a challenge! I did the bodypaint all by myself, though I used a very useful tutorial I found on youtube. In particular I spent a lot of time doing the facial make-up in order to give my face a very doll-like look. I'm happy with the result and I wish you will like it too ^_^

The healthy lion cubs of Mukuni Big 5. Running with them in the morning...Unforgettable!

Well, sometimes we find on our African pictures comments from people who doubt about our African activity. This is a reasonable reaction, that's why we decided to post some clarification directly on the pictures for all those who can pass through here. Of course all comments are well accepted and we will be glad to answer to all of you. This is part of our work.
______________________________________________
We thank all people who comment our shots with our big cats with these kind of notes:

What many people don't realize is that once fully grown up those lions go to the canned hunting industry
www.theguardian.com/environment/2013/jun/03/canned-huntin...
_____________________________________________
This information can be very useful for people who are not aware about this big sad "industry". Just to let you know, we work in this center since 4 years and I can assure you that all our animals growing here will then be released in a safe area where no farms, no hunters, no shoots will be allowed except for Photo shooting. After so many years in Africa we are enough well informed about this kind of industry and , of course, we would not work and spend all our energies and money for such a market. Our aim is just conservation and breeding program. I could write papers and papers, but it t would be much easier for everybody to have a look in internet at our center : Mukuni Big 5 Safaris
www.mukunibig5.co.zm/volunteerp/
Many other information can be found just typing the name of the center or our names in internet, Facebook etc..
Here in Flickr we have many friends and contacts and they know very well that what we do for these animals is just focused to the safeguard of nature and wildlife.
Further to this, we also have deep information about other centers created for the canned hunting industry. It's not easy to fight them, the governments of many states support this business. But we do what we can through information and some other ways .
Al people interested, are very welcome to join us as volunteering or just for a visit during a possible trip in the area.
Thanks however for your comment which allowed us to give some more information to people .

A very useful ground cover plant for a shady area in the garden. It flowers in late winter into early spring and is dormant from early summer onwards until it flowers the following year. Mine grows happily together with some of my ferns in an area which gets no direct sunlight during the winter. Great winter colour in the garden!
Concepts are useful to discribe the world, but they can be dangerous when using them in a bad way, as don Quijote de la Mancha. He was out of reality, but maybe we are also out of reality when we see don Qijote where he is not !
I've decided to keep the Black Swan and market, and to eventually build out the surrounding streets and buildings to create a little bit of the City of Durrough in which it resides. So this is a look at the tavern before the Battle of Durrough, in happier days. On a side note, I also built a better tree to go with it. This is definitely going to be part of the Lands of Roawia Castle Builders Collaborative Display at Brickfair VA 2014.
Blogged by The Brothers Brick. Thanks again guys!
Blogged by The Brick Time. Thank you!
For those curious, the Black Swan was partially inspired by the Old Weaver's House in Canterbury, England.
You probably think I only used my iPhone my entire vacation. You're mostly right. I did shoot with my DSLR, but only for an upcoming exhibition (and maybe a useful snapshot, I will see). It's not my normal thing, but it was very relaxing to put the camera down for a week. As soon as I get home I have photoshoots booked so I'll be back on track :)

The quintessential classic 1950s, B.R. designed, really useful engines pose at the 2022 DRS open day at Crewe Gresty Bridge (photobombed by an 88).
There are many reasons why visitors flocked to this event at Gresty Bridge on 16 July 2022, but one of them must surely be that it may have been the last opportunity to view the DRS heritage fleet in significant numbers. The offer of a lease back scheme may mean that DRS will still have access to some of these magnificent machines and hopefully Kingmoor can produce a line up like this in 2024.

Hey guys, lots going on and lots to talk about, and it feels like it's been too long since I posted a star shot.
This is the Oregon Coast with the Milky Way arcing overhead and a fishing trawler on the horizon. It's amazing how something that seems to be a nuisance at the time can become a useful dynamic later after consideration. ...And being forced to work with it! *laughing*
I like the "gentleness" of this image. What do you think about it?
This week I will be out of town working on an exciting local video production called "Treeverse." I was honored to be asked to be part of it, and then excited as it's developed into a sizable production full of creativity and imagination. You can find out more information
I will be doing timelapse and night photography of the event. Fingers crossed that we get a clear night for stars! A major shout out and thank you to # Dynamic Perception for supporting the production with a Stage Zero timelapse dolly system. If you are into timelapses- check out their system. It is incredibly powerful and incredibly simple to use. I could not rave enough about how much I am loving the Stage Zero and may run away with it to Mexico when I am supposed to send it back- wait, Canada is closer, so maybe Canada instead of Mexico. I will try to attach a sample video below of the kind of stuff I will be doing for this production. I am leaving this morning for the event and will be gone until Sunday. It's going to be an amazing week of photography, videography, timelapse, adventure and soggy mud.
A big thank you to all of you that responded to the video tutorial on Processing Stars! It was a major effort to put it together and get it online. Thank you for your support and interest. There will be more videos to come and in field workshops this summer.
It has been a wild ride pursuing this star photography thing. Lots of surprises, challenges, excitement, setbacks, and learning. When I first pointed my camera up into the night sky to try and take a picture of the stars with my DSLR, my jaw dropped when my preview screen lit up with more stars than my eyes could see or imagine were out there. The shot was underexposed, out of focus, and noisy as hell. Even though I was completely hooked at that first moment, I never would have guessed or imagined that the excitement of that one star shot would translate into the path it has become. We live in an exciting time where the digital revolution is putting POWERFUL tools at very affordable prices our hands. I encourage you to give a try at taking star pictures. Drive far out of town, and point that camera up into the sky! More than likely, your first tries will be out of focus, underexposed and noisy as hell just like mine were- but as likely, you'll feel that wonder of looking up into a starry sky and the amazement that you can take a picture of it! In case you've missed the posting in the past, if you do want to give shooting stars a chance, I've made a video tutorial geared to show you tips and techniques for "Your First Night Out Shooting Stars." It is not exhaustive, but it will point you in the right direction and give you that push of confidence and interest you may be needing to try it out. And, hopefully you can skip the first year and a half it took me to figure out how to even begin taking star shots!
Check it out # here
Thanks everyone for your support and interest in my work. It is continually a source of encouragement and inspiration for me!

Grand Canyon NP, AZ
A majestic view of the Grand Canyon from the Mather Point overlook taken during a recent family vacation.
The canyon itself was magnificent but I found it truly difficult to do it justice in a photograph. First, haze was a constant issue. This shot was actually one of the few where the haze was manageable in post. Second, as much as I loved traveling out west with my family and observing as my kids saw for the first time some of the national parks that I hold in such high regard, it had its trade offs. For starters, sunrise shots were simply out of the question. Instead, midday shooting in harsh light was the norm. Advance scouting was not really an option - once we left left an overlook, it was quite literally in the rear view mirror and "gone" for good. Planting myself in one spot for several hours while waiting for better light was simply not in the cards like it would have been had I been traveling with my typical group of photography companions. That said, my first visit to GCNP provided some some valuable intel that will surely be useful for my next visit, whenever that may be.
Hope you enjoy this one.
"The beautiful is as useful as the useful. Perhaps more so." ~~ Victor Hugo
It's my belief that without something in our life we think is beautiful we perish.
I go through a lot of decision often when I post ... will I be the only one to like this shot, is it really good enough to post, etc., etc. And sometimes I take one down within a few minutes of it being posted. This is one of those shots. Last rays of sun in the Tetons and Amy and I saw this bear meandering off into the backlit woods. I absolutely love the shot for the spirit it conveys though I know it is not a good technical shot.
Sorry I got to wordy here! Have a great day!
THANKS for your kind visits,
Bev

Old military truck, now slightly useful as parts. Turned out to pasture and the pasture is about to take over. I love boredom on train chases.
It was inevitable that the cheeky face of Thomas the Tank Engine would feature as a 'squared circle' and here he is!
The city of Mandalay, the capital of the Mandalay Region, Myanmar, lies on the eastern (true left) bank of the Irrawaddy River some 575 km (357 mi.) north of Yangon. Mandalay Hill (224 m, 735 ft,) rises some 135 m (443 ft.) above the northern part of the city. I took this shot in the Su Taung Pyae Pagoda, which lies on the summit of Mandalay Hill.
Two ancient buildings are located in a position that in ancient times supplied for certainly strategic advantage. From this point you can clearly see Levanzo, Favignana and the Trapani coast. The two buildings have different natures: The Roman house had a military character while the Byzantine church has religious peculiarities. The first building was for defensive purposes. It had a complex system of facilities useful for conveying water collection.
The Byzantine church dates back to the early centuries of Christianity. Almost adjacent to the Roman building, it is rectangular in shape about 10 meters long, with a main and a side entrance, with barrel vaults and four central pillars. The church has a single nave divided into three spans of which the central one is the highest and ends with a hemispherical vault. The style is very reminiscent of the eastern one, which leads to the hypothesis that the church was erected around the 11th century by monks of the Byzantine rite, on a previous basis of Christian worship.

Dreamy nature image taken in Zouk Mosbeh, Lebanon. Taken with a canon 5D4 with a 50mm lens at wide aperture.
A strong but tired barn is slowly losing its grip on a useful life as deteriorating boards and shingles begin leaving gaps in its structure. Though it appears a fresh coat of paint and a little repair might make it the center of farmlife again, the sad reality is it will continue to decline until it becomes dangerous to walk in and an occupant of the farmsite will tear it down.
Cupolas, lightning rods, milkhouses and silos are now all vestiges of what once was. As my dad entered his 80s, one vestige of his farming career remained strong, striped bib overalls. He told my mom he wanted to be buried in a pair but my mother said that was one decision she was going to make by herself.
My mother's diaries from her first couple of years of marriage to my dad recounted buying him blue work shirts and a pair of new bib overalls that back in the 1930s only cost a dollar.
Dad felt the most comfortable in work overalls with a plier pocket and a hammer loop and his nod to a special occasion was to wear a new pair to it, much to the chagrin of my mother. The later years of his life he had little to do with farming but the familiar fit of striped bib overalls was a cocoon that held his farming memories tight.

Taken for Saturday Self-Challenge on the theme of "old but still useful". This is my husband's stereo with tuner, CD player and twin cassette deck. It still works, despite the dust and paint spatters!
Somewhere we do still have the turntable - not sure that will still work, and it will definitely need a new stylus before we could play any of those new fangled vinyls that the kids are all going mad for now...
Well I was in two minds as to uploading this one. Firstly because I know its been done a few times before. Secondly as I don't want to offend anyone!
But I did it for my own personal learning with photoshop and it turned out far better than I expected, and seeing as one of the reason I did this 365 this year was to learn and force myself to improve in this area I figured I should really put it up.
Lessons learned today were:
1. That actually planning the shots you are going to use makes the edit far easier.
2. A blank background shot can be useful.
3. And a silver thermos flask makes a good metallic adaptor.

WILD THISTLE
The artichoke (Cynara scolymus) is the edible flower par excellence, as well as a vegetable and medicinal plant with a long tradition. It is endemic to the Mediterranean region, where the first evidence of the presence of this plant dates back to the first century AD. In France and England, however, the artichoke spread only starting from the 15th century. Today, artichokes are increasingly seen in home gardens because, in addition to being useful, they are also beautiful and ornamental.
It is also well known as a medicinal plant and was named medicinal plant of the year in 2003. It helps the regular functioning of the liver and gall bladder and has appetite-stimulating, digestive and cholesterol-reducing effects. For medicinal use, an infusion of dried artichoke leaves is used, which is consumed as a tea.

banana leaves are very useful in the rural philippine kitchen. they can be used to wrap food like meat, fish and rice before steaming, grilling, boiling, frying or even baking, and gives food a very unique refreshing flavor. aside from that, they may also serve as plates! in some festivities, banana leaves cover tables and food are served directly on clean fresh leaves. no need for plates and cutlery. you eat with your hands. just remember to wash your hands thoroughly before and after! lol!
