Are you in for a tip? This winter is slowly coming to an end, at least we hope so :) The word is out that there is still few snow days left ahead of us so I thought that one more snow shooting tip might come useful. THE TIP: Since almost all cameras will underexpose your image while shooting snow it is safe to manually overexpose your image in most occasions. To be on a safer side I always bracket my exposures, in one step increments, in those situations. What do you think?
Grevillea, commonly known as spider flowers, is a genus in the family Proteaceae. Most species are endemic to Australia. Grevillea tripartita is endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. It is an erect, prickly shrub with divided leaves with 3 lobes, and clusters of red and cream-coloured or reddish-orange and yellow flowers. To lighten up the shadows I used a reflector here which turned out to be more useful than my LED panel which was overpowered by the bright conditions. florabase.dbca.wa.gov.au/browse/profile/19489

one of the views from Rachel's Knoll, Sedona, arizona
After Rachel's death in 2001, the property that the Knoll sits on was sold to Seven Canyons, but with provisions to allow visitors to the site on an ongoing basis. Originally the buyers did not follow through on these provisions, but because of diligent work by Rachel's children and their lawyer, the courts have now declared that Seven Canyons must comply
Imagine the pristine beauty due west of Sedona with nothing but magnificent red rock formations in all directions. For many years, residents of Sedona were allowed to use a very special place in this extraordinary area. It was found on private property in the Long Canyon area and was owned by a woman named Rachel. She purchased this beautiful land, piece by piece, in the early 1970s and then made it available to the residents of Sedona, and all people from around the world.
Her property was perched high above the Long Canyon valley on a knoll which was later to be known as Rachel’s Knoll. To access her property one had to walk about half a mile meandering up a dirt road allowing ample time to experience and honor the drama and magical beauty of the land. Once on the knoll, one would find medicine wheels, seating areas, trails to guide you around to the meditative areas plus one of the most extraordinary red rock views in Sedona.
This land was most sacred to the Native Americans in the area and was used by them for centuries for their ceremonies and inspiration. Rachel knew when she entered this sacred place that it would be her goal to save it for all people so they might enjoy and honor the Native Americans who once lived there.

Leafalligraphy 2 is a macro photograph of dried oleander leaves.
I photograph the leaves on a light box. The light from the light box shines through the leaves, revealing their details. The white space around them gives the feeling of their being suspended.
The creative work is done in Photoshop. I have the ancient CS 5!
In this photo, the composition felt as if it was missing something, so duplicated it, flipped it horizontally and vertically and used the darken blend mode. Darken blend mode knocks out the white in an image and allows for superimposing images painlessly.
The superimposed images were merged but now there wasn't enough white space, so I used the free transform function to make my composition slightly smaller.
It still looked a bit static, so I created a new layer and placed it under the layer with the image.
The main image was rotated -32 degrees. Getting the angle right took a few tries.
Now I had blank spaces in parts of my image, so I highlighted the underlying layer I had created, selected new fill layer, and filled it in with white. The layers were merged.
I have learnt that images on white pop if they have a black border.
I created another new layer, and placed it under the merged image.
To create the black border, I selected the underlying white layer, and clicked in 'canvas size' in Images. and typed in one centimeter for height and width.
Now I have a frame, but it had grey and white checks on it, meaning it was transparent!
all I had to do to fix that was to keep the transparent underlying layer selected, select new fill layer in the layers tab and fill it in with black.
I saved an unmerged PSD file and a JPEG file.
This is all a lot less complicated than it sounds!
Hope you find it useful.
Always a good subject to capture. Size and or shape doesn’t really matter. Buildings that once served a useful purpose now appear to take on a new purpose that is an arena for photos, quiet moments and a resting place from biking or walking. Now also a place for contemplation for what was once a purposeful building of a different nature. Whose to say which purpose was most useful. I have my own opinion on that🚴♂️.
Very useful plants in costal regions. Their dense foliage provides excellent erosion control, shelter and nesting sites for various birds and animals, the rose hips are a food source for birds and other wildlife. It seems that beach roses play a vital role in maintaining healthy coastal ecosystems.
And they are very decorative, I think.

Simpoh Air or Shrubby Dillenia has large leaves, and large yellow flowers. The flowers open at 3 am and last only a day. The ripe fruit splits open also at 3 am, into pinkish star-shaped segments to reveal seeds covered in red arils. The plant blooms from age 3-4 and can live for 50-100 years! The Simpoh Air sends out very deep tap roots to reach underground water sources. The tree is used to detect water as it always grows near water. The special thing about this useful plant is that the leaves can be used to wrap food and can also be used by tailor birds to make nests.
Simpoh Air is used to staunch bleeding wounds, and the fruit pulp may be used to wash the hair (Brunei).

Eastbourne Pier, East Sussex, England.
In April 1865 The Eastbourne Pier Company was formed with a working capital of £15,000. Work began in April 1866; Four years later Lord Edward Cavendish opened the pier although it wasn’t completed until 1872.
The pier is 300 meters long and built on stilts, which rest in cups on the seabed allowing the whole structure to move during rough weather.
The piers entrance was originally built on the lower promenade but due to the rough storms in 1877 it was swept away; it was then rebuilt at a higher level. In 1888 a 400-seater domed pavilion was built and just two years later a 1000-seater theatre, Bar, Camera Obscura and Office Suite replaced it, that same year two saloons were built in the midway.
During the Second World War decking was removed to host machine guns to provide a useful advantage point to repel enemy landings. In December 1942, an exploding mine caused considerable damage to the pier and nearby hotels.
The 1000 seat theatre was then destroyed by a fire in 1970 and was replaced with an evening entertainment venue that has since become home to Atlantis Nightclub, The Waterfront Cafe/Bar.
In 2014 the pier caught fire again, this time destroying the large arcade and saloons in the midway. After this the buildings were then dismantled and it was created into an ‘Open Deck’ area.
This particular image was originally shot and posted in colour in early March, but since then I've come to like this B&W edit a little more, which I hope you enjoy...
Thanks for viewing and have a great Sunday... :-)
I've not been out with the camera for a while, having been il for 4 weeks with a sodium deficiency apparently brought about by a type of blood pressure medication I was taking. Not great at one of the best times of year to be going out with a camera.
I was still around the reserve early evening after a day there, so thought I'd have a play trying to get shots of the Swifts zooming about. Not an ideal situation due to field of view squeezed by trees, but useful learning process.
Thank you for your kind comments and faves
Recently, I took the opportunity to try out a couple of rented tilt-shift lenses. Coming from a large format film background, I always enjoyed the craft of working with this kind of equipment. Although I have no desire to return to film, I was interested in testing some adapted tilt-shift lenses on a modern digital mirrorless camera.
The Canon 90mm TS-E II macro is the one I might consider buying. It was a pleasure to use. Focussing was a snap and the images it produced were very satisfying. Its tilt capability enabled me to capture smaller abstract scenes like this in a single frame with no focus stacking. This lens really suits my photography and the kind of subjects I enjoy.
Unsurprisingly, there are also some issues. The lens with adaptor is quite big and heavy. And even on the used market, it's expensive. Manual focus, naturally, so no focus bracketing. And, of course, no weather sealing either. Now I'm trying to decide if a lens like this still has a place in 2025. If it could be done, a smaller, lighter version with support for focus bracketing when needed would bring tilt-shift right up-to-date.
An AF capable tilt only lens would actually be incredibly useful in a 90mm macro. Perspective control is not really needed at these longer focal lengths. Shift is much more useful at wider angles, where you don't really need tilt. So why not pair this with a shift-only 24 or 35mm? Simplifying the movements in this way would help keep the size, weight and cost down, and would offer something genuinely innovative for a change.
Have a great weekend, everyone.

Featuring some new unique, beautiful, and very useful items from Cinoe, Hive, and Vespertine.
From Cinoe the Teruteru-bozu doll. Includes a decor version and puppet version. A teru teru bōzu is a small traditional handmade doll made of white paper or cloth that Japanese farmers began hanging outside of their window by a string in hopes for good weather the following day and no rain! In shape and construction they are essentially identical to ghost dolls, such as those made at Halloween.

Small In Frame - It took me a while to come around with the small in frame trend, but I think the switch to mirrorless and going back to using a zoom lens helped me explore and appreciate this type of photography more. The subject/eye autofocus allows me to compose these images real time, no more moving the focus point or focusing and recomposing. With a zoom, I am able to capture a portrait and a wider angle shot from the exact same spot I am standing. This is especially useful for fast subjects like hummingbirds - by the time you move, they are off the perch!
Loved the juxtaposition here of the colorful hummingbird with the dry vegetation.

When I read the theme of the week I thought that this time I would not participate, one because I had absolutely no idea what photo to put and two because I wanted to stay in the theme of nature, so no objects or things created by man.
I came back useful this photo taken at the sea in Liguria, which I thought about loading one day or the other. I think it fits perfectly to the definition of relaxation! ;-)
[Unfortunately, the MacroMonday administrator removed this photo from the group because it was not released this week, in fact it's dated June 10]

My first build of the year is a little diorama featuring a very cute sea outpost combined with a very useful...um...outhouse.
Both the building has the same color scheme, medium azure for the walls, tan for little details and medium nougat for the roof. It's the first time I've used lavender plant leaves and I'm very happy with this color.
The little outpost is built half on rock and the other half on stilts. I added a handful of little details to let it fun and lively.
The white boat is inspired by that of Anthony Wilson.
Hope you like it!
