Using ND 10 stop for long 30 second exposure shot at sunrise (5:30am). As you can see the long exposure has created the impression of the moving waves but it still retains some shape. There is some mist that gives it that soft etherreal look. I particularly liked the way the early morning light hit the large rock nearest to the camera.
I created a black & white layer and then reduced the opacity to allow some colour to come through. I tried various levels but this seemed to work best to my eye. This image has many hits since it went in to Explore but I slightly prefer the light and texture in this later image see www.flickr.com/photos/mark-edwards/6963320364/in/photostream

I used to go to school at Portland State University, spent a bit over four years there in fact, so during breaks in classes, or long lunches, I walked the city. I have known about this tree for years, and I knew there was a photo of it that I really wanted to take. Yet despite frequent return trips over the years, I never found it. That is until this night on a photo walk, when the elements all came together and it made sense. And finally I have a picture of this tree that I am pleased with. Not that I won't visit it again, but it is nice to have that particular itch scratched. ;-)

i'm posting this intentionally noisy self-portrait because last night i dreamt i was attacked by a snake, that someone else had released in order to kill me. the snake bit my hand, and i could feel the doom-filled tingling, i could feel my lungs closing up. then some strange dark-haired girl came up and started slashing at my hand with a kitchen knife to get the poison out. as my blood drained into the sink, the sound of the rain outside my window woke me up.
now, how in holy hell do i get that image the hell out of my head?
when logging on this morning and looking at pics i snapped yesterday, i found this. and i thought, ah yes. that explains it.
sorry if this is too intense. i call it like i see it. and like i've said, i used to blog, now i flickr. the image + the words is what i'm after. and i really am ok. it was just a bad dream, my head trying to exorcise the demons. it's a new day, the sun's shining, florian's yelling at me to have breakfast, work calls, and life goes on.

A 600 seconds (10 minutes) long exposure, using Lee Filter "Super Stopper".
The Naviglio Pavese is one of the canals making up the Navigli system in Lombardy, Italy. Once navigable, it is 33 km (21 mi) long and connected the city of Milan to Pavia, and through a flight of six locks to the River Ticino.
Construction started in 1564, but was interrupted 20 years later just outside Milan due to technical problems: the lock there is still called Conca Fallata, which in Italian means "Failed Lock". Building resumed at the beginning of the 19th century and was completed in 1819.
The canal was finally closed to navigation in the 1960s, but work has recently started to restore it back to full navigation, a link in the project to connect Switzerland to Venice by inland waterway.
I used to have quite a few finches that I raised back
around 1980-1990.
I had a pair of Australian Lady Gouldian Finches
and was able to raise some young from them.
The pair I had were captive bred.
This shot is from one of my winter projects.
I ended up making over $850.00 from that winter project.
While in todays terms that doesn't sound like a lot, back then dollars went a lot farther.
Hope the bright colors brighten your day.

I use Flickr like that, you know
I used to write a diary, all the way till I was 16 and went off to England for a working camp for 3 weeks.
I was so sure that I would never come from that trip alive
So I burned the diaries I had
Little did I understand that the burning was a way to tell myself that I was finished with the life I had till that day.
It was often a wretched life, lots of circumstances made it like that
Things no child should experience
So deep down I understood that I had choices to make
I had a life to live
How to start the change?
Tricky one for a 16 year old
But I started to live fully and I definitely took it all in.
I had to, you know
Because how could I else understand the good things from the bad things
So I experienced loads, both good and bad - but now I was in charge, I was to do the choices.
When you experience yourself, instead of being told how to do or not to do things it settles in your mind in quite another way.
It is the first step to get things right, life schmocks right back at your face and the experiences you just did makes seeds in your mind and you can start to harvest after a while
Life could begin
Don't judge a person for dealing with life, we have reasons you may not understand and often the ones living the life don't understand before later
And yes Dear Diary, I did escape from the working camp, lol, I ran off to London and lived there for some weeks. My folks didn't know.
No cellphones, haha.
I made it home, refreshed, smuggling lots of miniature bottles with Cherry Heering and Cointreau
Life could definitely begin, lol.
Happy ending today too
And yes, Christian - this is Karmøy, sunset towards Great Britain :D

If you're in Jackson Hole, WY (USA) anywhere between May and early August and you don't shoot the Milky Way over one of the Moulton Barns then you are certainly missing out. Go for it. Get out there and expand your photography knowledge, skills and the depth of your photography content. Don't be afraid of the dark ... take a couple of friends and have a great time with night photography and don't forget to light paint a few other objects throughout Jackson Hole.
The light in the clouds is from the town of Jackson which is about 15 minutes south of this barn.
As time goes on, I will upload other night sky / Milky Way shots I've taken ... I just don't want to upload one after another and bore people to death.

Nightsky / Milky Way photography in Jackson Hole, WY
In 2018, I will be leading two 4 day photography workshops. One with Ryan Smith in Arches National Park in March and one in GTNP during the middle of June. During both workshops, I will take my group out for 3 nights of my Milky Way night sky workshop.
My 2018 4-5 day photography workshop schedule:
Icons of the Southwest w/Ryan Smith - April 14-18
Jackson Hole, Wyoming spring - June 15-19
Washington, DC Milky Way Monuments - November 7-9
The great part is that in 2018 I will return to Jackson Hole for the incredible wildflowers throughout the valley and the surrounding mountains.
Do you shoot the Milky Way but need a little help in getting the Milky Way to jump out of your photos ? If so, take a look at my ebook A Photographer's Milky Way Processing Guide - A Photoshop HowTo

As Monty Python used to say, "And now for something completely different." Different at least from my last seven posts.
They don't call dusk the "photographer's golden hour" for nothing. A golden veneer of light is cast across shallow floodwaters that both envelop and reflect all that dared stand in the way.

The House Celeste use to live in, Once busting with life had become nothing more than a painful memory .
The creaking of wood, insects and earie winds were the only sounds in this house now. They were disturbing noises in a disturbing environment.
The more time would pass the more the traces of those who lived here will disappear. Even now there were only remnants left, The Forgotten Guestroom Sits there in the corner .. waiting..

Not a conventional title, but I have to admit that this beauty is from last year and that is why I called it a used bird. A couple of these beauties have returned this year, but they were extremely skittish and I had little luck yesterday on the bayou. The winds were a bit higher as I made a rare visit to the bayou in the afternoon. In some places the trees blocked the wind and it was quite pleasant, but it caused issues in other areas. I’ll get to the photos from yesterday in due time. This Roseate Spoonbill was foraging in an area that we call the flats and was a bit more cooperative. Photo taken on Horsepen Bayou and a bit of a change of pace from the usual characters that we usually see.

My travel in Brazil (Maranhao) (July 2010)
"The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses) is located in Maranhão state, in northeastern Brazil, just east of the Baía de São José, between 02º19’—02º45’ S and 42º44’—43º29’ W. It is an area of low, flat, occasionally flooded land, overlaid with large, discrete sand dunes. It encompasses roughly 1000 square kilometers, and despite abundant rain, supports almost no vegetation."

The use of the snoot underwater opens up a wide range of lighting possibilities, leaving the final result to your creativity and technique.
This cheeky little blenny was just poking its head out of its rock shelter, so I was able to isolate it well with the snoot.
