A foreign body was discovered in the bladder of a cat. This cat's bladder wall is extremely thickened from the long term presence of a urinary catheter. The cat had been treated for a blocked urethra. He chewed the end of the catheter off. Measurement #5 is the urinary catheter. All other measurements are of the bladder wall.

Our Monty's actually the fourth Montmorency Scott.

This portrait is of Montmorency Scott the First: his father was a London aristocrat, his mother a Spanish contessa, and he was a famous dandy, polar explorer, and gourmand known in the clubs for his tireless search for ever-more beautifully disgusting smells and tastes. His adventures ended when he plunged to death on his forty-second expedition, when the rotted elephant seal carcass in which he was rolling turned out to conceal a crevasse.

In the 1970s, researchers uncovered the remains of his base camp, and small, intact vials of liquified penguin intestines later fetched a high price on the market as rare delicacies. (Can you imagine being able to taste decayed penguin from the early 1900s?!)

Montmorency Scott the First's body was never found, but a pink silk handkerchief encased in crystalline blue ice washed up on a beach near Rakiura, New Zealand, just a few years ago. The embroidered monogram and traditional Spanish pattern known as "cowpat and carnation" made it unmistakeable, and it was taken to Highgate Cemetery and placed in Montmorency Scott's otherwise-empty grave, the stone of which is pitted and etched by the urinary tributes of his many admirers.

Juniper berries have long been used as a traditional remedy for chronic disorders of the Urinary tract and for kidney problems. As one of the most powerful herbs available for these conditions, juniper berries must be used with wisdom. For example, many practioners caution that it should not be used during acute urinary infections, but rather in between bouts to tone the system, and others swear by its effectiveness as an antiseptic and curative during infections. For those with kidney issues, very few herbs will work more quickly, so attention should be paid to the effects on the body during treatment. Juniper berries are also used to reduce blood sugar and to reduce water weight.

Orthosiphon Aristatus (Cat’s Whiskers, Java Tea, Misai Kuching)

Absolutely a beautiful and extraordinary ornamental shrub to add interest and contrast to any garden. And, in the darkness of the night, its stunning white pagoda-shaped flower clusters will sparkle and light up the garden. It grows easily and fast, though a little too hastily, wild and free. It is fuss-free and blooms readily not only when groomed with frequent cuts but almost year round in tropical warm climate.

Plant Profile, Culture and Propagation :

Common Name: Cat’s Whiskers, Java Tea, Misai/Kumis Kuching (in Malay language)

Family name: Lamiaceae

Plant type: Tropical herbaceous perennial, native to China, Taiwan, South East Asia and tropical Australia.

Features: Orthosiphon aristatus is a fast-growing herbaceous shrub that can reach 1-2 meters tall and spread to a meter wide. It is erect and highly branched with a tendency to touch ground and root easily. Semi-deciduous foliage is medium green in color and borne in opposite pairs on a reddish-brown quadrangle stem that is slightly puberulent. Glossy leaves are glabrous to puberulent on both surfaces and lanceolate-shaped with coarsely serrated margins. It produces racemes that are 10-20 cm long with pretty tubular flowers that are uniquely shaped and bear 5-6 cm long stamens that look like cat’s whiskers, hence the common name. These beautiful pagoda-shaped flower clusters can be white/almost white, or mauve to lavender or light violet/purple.

Culture (Care): Cat’s Whiskers is easily grown with minimal maintenance.

Light: Full sun to part sun or partial shade. Grows best in sunny location. It can tolerate shade but tends to grow skyward with less flowering.

Moisture: Medium to high water requirements though less once established.

Soil: Adaptable to various soil conditions, but preferably compost-enriched potting mix, that is consistently moist but well-drained.

Others: It takes well to heavy pruning, so prune regularly to maintain a bushy appearance and to encourage prolific flowering. Deadhead spent blooms. Feed with a liquid fertilizer monthly. No serious pest or diseases. However, do check for whiteflies, mealy bugs or scales that can infest it.

Usage: It is also popularly used as a traditional herb, especially in Malaysia and Indonesia to treat diabetes, kidney stones and urinary disorders, high blood pressure, rheumatism and gout. Dried leaves can be brewed as a herbal tea or a tasty drink with honey or milk. There are products of Orthosiphon Aristatus (Misai Kuching) extracts sold commercially for these medicinal purposes.

-Thesis: The molecular and physiological effects of starvation and other stresses on

Flexibacter chinensis

Average grade: A+

For many years physiological, morphological and particularly molecular studies on

gliding bacteria were impossible due to the lack of a suitable technique for the genetic

manipulation of this group of bacteria including Flexibacter chinensis. Our study has focused

on the physiological and morphological changes in molecular level in this organism during

the transition from the exponential to stationary phase of growth, and during long -term stress

condition. Our data demonstrate that there is a dramatic change in respiration activity and

enzymes during the stationary phase which can not be seen in the exponential phase.

Parallel to this bacterial morphology changes with a particularly noticeable size

reduction in this usually filamentous bacterium. With the collaboration of Wisconsin

University in USA we have developed a method for the molecular study of this group of bacteria.

We have constructed two mutants for the genes which produce two novel sigma factors, KatF(sS)

and RpoH(s32), and have investigated the effect of these mutants with respect to cell size

changes during the transition from growth to starvation conditions and under heat stress.

The mutants were unable to change from the filamentous to coccoidal form and consequently

were unable to survive stress as effectively as the parental strain which could undergo

morphological changes. Our data have demonstrated the importance of cell division in

Flexibacter chinensis for the survival of this bacterium under stress conditions.

The Microbial sulfur-specific transformation which selectively desulfurize organic sulfur compounds in fossil fuels, has been identified. We have Identified, Isolated, cloned and sequenced a 4kb gene locus from a newly isolated Iranian strain Rhodococcus FMF(4S pathway genes) on a broad host range plasmid with integration ability in chromosome of gram negative bacteria. This was reported for the first time as chromosomal conserved dsz genes from 4S pathway in Rhodococcus which these genes recorded in EMBL(1,2,3,4). This organized as one operon with three genes (dszA, dszB and dszC)under the control of single promoter. The dsz gene from this new strain has been cloned under control of tac promoter in different pseudomonas solvent tolerant species(ATCC 9027). We have applied an industrial microorganism , with the ability in biological desulfurization. In this way, using molecular and microbiological techniques we successfully constructed a manipulated bacterium with two relevant industrial application, that is biosurfactant production and desulfurization of fossil fuel. I have selected a strain of pseudomonas. Sp. which is producing biosurfactants which can help the desulfurization process by accelerating phase separation. In this regard I have cloned Rhodococcus Erytheropolis(IGTS8) desulfurization operon with a heterologues promoter(tac) in this pseudomonas strain. The resulted construct has three industrial traits. First, it has an enhanced desulfurization activity due to the exchange of native promoter with heterologues tac promoter. Second, it can produce biosurfactants which in turn help to desulfurization process by enhancing phase separation. Third, as pseudomonas Sp. is the most known solvent tolerance bacteria, this construct has the advantage to be used in industrial operation. In further step I am going to conduct a research on likely interactions between Rhamnolipid biosurfactants and oil components. Further researches is in progress to find out the influence of the biosurfactants on DBT desulfurization. By the way I am to appreciate the close cooperation of Dr Diaz from Spain. This is the new alternatives to commercialize the biodesulfurization of crude oil processes.
