where the river turia once flowed through the heart of valencia, now strides a figure across the reclaimed canvas of the former riverbed, transformed into a verdant artery of public parks. the bridge above, a remnant of past crossings, now casts geometric shadows on this grand urban garden. it's a place where the city's history is etched in every contour and corner, a seamless blend of Valencia's past and present. graffiti tags echo the voices of a vibrant community, while the verdant stretch whispers the tales of water that once carved its path here. as the city breathes and buzzes, its inhabitants move rhythmically in the riverbed-turned-park, a confluence of nature's resilience and human ingenuity.

From inside Penela Castle, a medieval fortification located in Coimbra, Portugal, the panoramic view reveals its strategic importance in the Mondego defensive line during the Christian Reconquest. The military architecture of the 11th and 12th centuries is evident in the sturdy masonry walls, battlements, and watchtowers, designed for the defense and surveillance of the territory. The view extends to the village of Penela, which developed around the castle, displaying a coexistence between contemporary buildings and the medieval layout of the streets. Outside the walls, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição stands out, built in the 16th century on the site of the former synagogue. The surrounding landscape, marked by green hills, pine trees, and eucalyptus trees, demonstrates the evolution of the region, where traditional agriculture intersects with modern forestry. Classified as a Property of Public Interest, Penela Castle offers a unique perspective on Portuguese history and medieval military architecture.

Water reservoir near the Salinas do Samouco, in Alcochete (municipality of Alcochete, Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve), on the Montijo peninsula. The characteristic wooden stakes (esteiros) that divide the water are traditional elements of salt farming in this region, visible in the image. This important 360-hectare ecosystem, an integral part of the wetland with significant ecological value, serves as a habitat for various aquatic birds, including flamingos, visible in the photo, and other waders. The salt pans, which have been in operation since Roman times, maintain their function in the artisanal production of salt and fleur de sel, contributing to the preservation of the region's biodiversity and cultural heritage, in an example of coexistence between this protected space and the urban development visible in the background.

From the Pedro e Inês footbridge, the image reveals Coimbra as an amphitheater overlooking the Mondego, the largest river exclusively in Portugal. The river, essential to the city's identity, reflects its urban density and structures the landscape. The bridge, with its asymmetrical design, offers a privileged view of the right bank, where the historic center extends. At the top of the hill, the university district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013, dominates with the Paço das Escolas and the University Tower, formerly the Royal Palace, symbols of knowledge. The commercial district, stretching down to the river, mirrors the medieval stratification of the city. The view combines the contemporary bridge with the monumental heritage, illustrating the historical relationship between Coimbra and the Mondego. The river, a means of transport and source of irrigation, has shaped the city's development over the centuries, merging the past and the present into a single picture.

"De Pontsteiger" (which translates into "Ferry Jetty") , also known as the Miljoenengebouw (Millions building), is a residential tower in a rather new and “hip and happening” urban area called Houthavens in Amsterdam, in The Netherlands.

The design is by the hand of Arons and Gelauff Architects. In 2007 it was chosen as the winning design and, despite the credit crisis, was built almost according to the design in 2015-2019. In 2020, among nine other buildings, it was nominated for the Amsterdam Architecture Prize.

The building is situated on the embankment of the IJ where a ferry, locally known as ferry jetty, departs. There are homes, retail and catering areas located in the building. On the 25th floor there is a penthouse of 1440 m² (nb: the housing shortage in Amsterdam is big, so a 80 m2 apartment is already considered a large space), which was acquired by catering entrepreneur - a.k.a. tycoon - Won Yip, who sold 391 m² on to Marcel Boekhoorn (a Dutch entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist) in 2019.

Although the building has an extremely angular appearance, the plinth has spaces with flowing facades.

The building is 92 meters high. This makes the building the highest residential building in Amsterdam. A striking feature of the building is the luxurious finish, including bronze-green tiles between the floors. Other striking facade elements are the external and internal (but visible from the outside) V-shaped beams.

On the other hand, many residents of the brand new icon are not that happy. The building is very noisy. Some of them are starting to going crazy from the noise. "Sometimes I go to sleep somewhere else to relax." In the Pontsteiger you can pretty much hear all the sounds from your upstairs and downstairs neighbours. Including phone calls, doors that open and close, radio, TV, footsteps, flushing toilets, gaming, etc. The nickname "Discotheque Pontsteiger" already made a name for itself.

Other problems with the building include parking spaces which are too small for larger cars (Residents often cannot close their box because their car does not fit) and the patio doors have no handle on the outside. To enter you have to push against the window. Of course one can (not) expect these kind of problems for a bare rent apartment of 100 m² which starts at 1,800 euros. Including service costs, this comes at 2,500 euros per month.

Technical stuff

About why I started this series of black-and-white hyper long exposure photos, please scroll 4 photos back.

This is a single, tripod based, shot. Taken at 200ISO, f8, 131 seconds at 21.3 mils. This all situated in a seven Beaufort storm, so it is a small miracle that the shot is in focus and crisp.

Post-production was executed with Lightroom. I used several inverted radial filters and adjustment brushes. Please visit Yoshihiko Wada’s tutorials for more info. Finally, I added some copyright signs (in PS). The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the fact that my photos were frequently copied. So, don't bother commenting on that.

Hoorn - art in the street

Reggio Emilia AV Mediopadana is a high-speed railway station located in Reggio Emilia, Italy.Designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, the station features a striking modern design with a sweeping roof that mimics the shape of a wav.

It serves as a major transportation hub for the region, connecting it to cities like Milan, Bologna, and Florence. The station features modern architecture and amenities, making it a convenient and efficient stop for travelers in Italy.

Recent changes in NYC zoning are threatening the industrial areas of Long Island city, Queens, where I spend my peaceful time taking photos of the empty streets. This is my retreat, and now in the name of development, this great city of New York is taking it away from me block by block.
