3:35-3:55 PM THE RISE OF THE DESIGN APPRENTICE

Businesses are facing the steepest labor shortages in a generation with over 11 million open jobs in the U.S. One solution: the rise of Design Apprentice programs across public and private sector organizations. This new reskilling and upskilling mechanism is creating more inclusive and equitable pathways to the global workforce by combining kinesthetic and action learning methods in product, service, fashion, sound and user experience design. We’ll explore how the great global reset is shaping a new generation of designers with STEAMD (science, tech, arts, math and design) super powers as a global force for good.

Based on the online coaching conversations, the coaches realized that a lot of people are in a state of transition, either because of job cuts, changes in work location and work descriptions or responsibilities, or a sudden need to upskill or reskill as there were new skill sets required of them, just to name a few. So on July 7, 2020, 7:30 PM (Manila Time), a panel of coaches and mentors will share their views, as well as, their own learnings from transition journeys they have experienced in an effort to help other people learn to cope with changes they are undergoing.

The ILO is supporting the construction of the first satellite vocational training centre of Jigjiga Polytechnic College using this labour-intensive methodology. It offers employment to both host- and refugee-community members, as well as upskilling opportunities. The centre itself will ensure that young refugees and host-community members can get easier access to vocational training and therefore improve their future employment prospects. ©ILO/Digital Birhan

society action

5:10pm

The future of a green energy economy depends on infrastructure, and the creation of infrastructure depends on

people and their labor. For a green workforce to thrive, we’ll need to create the conditions for prosperous

employment, a safe working environment and the protection of worker rights.

• What measures must we take to build an economy which tackles the climate crisis as well as economic,

gender, and racial disparity?

• How do we deliver on the promise of green jobs and upskill and empower the global workforce?

• How can we ensure the twin promises of economic growth and environmental protection to keep people and

workers onside for the green transition?
