How to pass the UPSC interview?
Passing the interview after passing the competitive exam is the biggest challenge and future turning point for candidates. Well, take the UPSC exam. The candidates interviewed were so talented that they were able to pass one of the toughest exams held in India. However, passing major exams is only half the battle, and the other half is a formidable task. Therefore, this step should not be taken lightly as an interview, as it is much more difficult when it comes to assessing an individual's ability to express opinions as well as their decision-making abilities.
The interviewer also gets an impression of the person's past. Therefore, presenting yourself in the most honest and truthful way is the best guarantee of success at the highest level of examination.
An interview is a face-to-face conversation with a specific purpose. Before agreeing to an interview, you should clearly know and understand the purpose of the interview. The nature and type of interview will depend on the purpose.
In an employment or selection interview, the aim of the interviewer, or the examiner or the Board of Interview is to assess and evaluate the extent of the candidate's suitability for the job in hand. In other words, the interview may be for selection to the IAS, IFS, IES, IPS and other such first grade UPSC cadres or may be at the Service Selection Boards (SSBs) for the Selection of Officers to the Army, Navy or Air Force. In all these cases, the selectors will have certain job specifications, and by means of interview, they would try to see how far the candidate meets such requirements.
The Union Public Service Commission holds that the object of its interviews is to assess the personal suitability of a candidate for the service he has applied for. The candidate will be interviewed by a Board who will have before them a record of his career.
He will be asked questions of general interest. The purpose of the interview is for a competent and unbiased observer to assess the candidate's personal suitability. This test is designed to assess a candidate's mental abilities. In a broader sense, this is an assessment of not only his intellectual qualities, but also his social qualities, interest in current events.
The questions posed to UPSC candidates are well worded. When answering, candidates should consider all possible points of view and approach their answers carefully. Critical analysis and logical thinking are best for answering questions. In addition to this, a calm mind and approach are required. When reviewing case studies or contextual questions, it is best to take a balanced rather than critical perspective.
Also if related to the candidates' subject appropriate selection of words especially of the technical words would be best way to impress the interviewers as it will show the knowledge and command over the subject. However it should be done with caution as a wrong usage can land you up in big trouble. The best way to answer is directly dealing with the issue. Supplements like 'My Personality Test', 'Facing the Interview Board', 'Improve Your Personality' and 'Group Discussion' give quite an original view of the personality test and help us in assessing our deficiencies beforehand and taking corrective measures.
Some of the order qualities to be judged are mental alertness, critical power of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, and balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion leadership, intellectual and moral integrity.
The technique of interview is not that of strict-cross examination but of a natural, though direct and purposive conversation, which is intended to reveal the mental qualities of the candidate. The personal test is not meant to be a test either of the specialized or general knowledge of the candidates are expected to have taken an intelligent interest not only in their special subject of academic study, but also in the events which are happening around them, both within and without their own state or country, as well as in the modern currents of thought, and in new discoveries which should rouse the curiosity of the well-educated youth.
The first biggest step in the direction is to prepare oneself for the answers. But no one can predict as to from where the questions would be asked. However as the general pattern shows that the interviewers generally ask either from the main subject paper that candidates opt for or it would be based on some contemporary issues.
Therefore, a complete knowledge of both is very important. First prepare your subject carefully. If some of your current issues are on-topic, please prioritize them. Regular reading of magazines and some newspapers can help you identify these issues.
