Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur, California. April/2018
Pfeiffer Beach in the Big Sur area is definitely off the beaten path, but well worth the drive. Just south of Big Sur Station on Highway 1 is unsigned Sycamore Canyon Road which winds its way down to the shore. The two-mile long road is paved, but it is twisty and narrow so RV’s and trailers are not allowed. From the parking area you have a short walk down to the beach. At this location Sycamore Canyon Creek empties into the Pacific and a rocky point protects some of the sand at the cove. Waves crash hard all around and the beach north of here invites exploration at lower tides. Tide pools can be found here at low tide too. The focal point of the beach is Keyhole Rock which has an amazing natural arch at the base where salt water, and even the last rays of daylight, can pass through. This beach is beautiful at sunset and frequently professionally photographed. The north end of the beach has unique purple sand that comes from manganese garnet rocks in the cliffs, just be aware that sometimes clothing-optional folks have been spotted in this area. Pfeiffer Beach is on land within Los Padres National Forest, but is managed with help from the California Coastal Commission.

Pfeiffer Beach na área de Big Sur é definitivamente fora do caminho mais conhecido, mas vale muito a parada. Ao sul de Big Sur, na rodovia 1, encontra-se a estrada que vai até a costa. A longa estrada de três quilômetros é pavimentada, mas é sinuosa e estreita, portanto trailers não são permitidos. Da área de estacionamento você tem uma curta caminhada até a praia. Neste local Sycamore Canyon Creek deságua no Pacífico e um ponto rochoso protege algumas das areias da enseada. Ondas batem com força e a praia ao norte daqui convida à exploração nas marés baixas. Unsigned chair from Grantham , identical to signed chair by Thomas Camm of Grantham. I had missed the signed one at the auction in Bucks but I had taken many pictures for my own records so when this little beauty turned up at a Cambridgeshire auction unsigned and unloved I was certain who made it . I compared individual turnings side by side on the computer - they could have been made the same week from the one workshop of Thomas Camm !! It came home with me for a very reasonable price !!
I recently attempted to take a photo of this old enamel sign at Purley railway station only to be politely questioned by a member of staff asking if I had signed in. I explained that I was not aware that I had to sign in and just wanted to take a quick photo of this old sign before catching my train. With only a couple of minutes until my train and not wanting to make a fuss I gave up. Yesterday however, I noticed that the sign was beautifully lit by the sunshine and very quickly took out my camera and got my shot without signing whatever I was meant to sign. Little tinker aren't I!

Unsigned chair with many features of a later Lincs side chair - shaped ends to the top comb and decorative back splat make this slightly different to anything in Cottons book : my guess is that it was made by Wilson of Grantham on Manthorpe Rd.

I'm late with posting this, but with my self portrait 365 I've told myself the important thing is taking the picture on the day, not posting it. I want to show what I've been doing, and sometimes those things happen at night, and I don't have the chance to upload them on time, so be it.
From the collection of Steven Voyt. This the first Lincs side chair on rockers that I have ever seen , on close inspection it appears to be all original and genuine. Although it is unsigned , just compare the turned back supports with the next photo , No 90, which is signed by Thomas Camm of Grantham ; I think the two chairs are near enough identical to say that they were made in the same workshop. The major difference between the two is in the front leg design , while one has two rings the other has a ring and a cove ; this would indicate a subtle change with time , the two ring design being recognised as coming later than the ring and cove.
