An unsigned, short pamphlet lists a calendar of planned anti-Vietnam War events in the greater Washington, D.C. area for a spring 1972 “People’s Offensive.”

Given the list of non-violent civil disobedience activities and the recognition of Ho Chi Minh’s birthday, it was probably published by the People’s Coalition for Peace and Justice (PCPJ) or one of its affiliates.

The antiwar movement had broken into two major coalitions at this point—PCPJ which raised issues besides ending the war in its demands (such as justice for black Americans and an end to poverty) and sponsored civil disobedience and the National Peace Action Coalition (NPAC) for which the Vietnam War was its single issue and did not support civil disobedience.

The two groups’ slogans differed also.

PCPJ favored “Sign the Treaty”—the People’s Peace Treaty negotiated between North and South Vietnamese and American students and supported by Provisional Revolutionary Government leaders.

Whereas NPAC favored “Out Now.”

Two historically rival groups also split between the two coalitions—The Communist Party USA supporting the PCPJ and the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party favoring NPAC.

A unsigned, undated three-page flyer (issued between May 8 and 10, 1970 and confirmed to have been issued by members of the student strike committee) dubbed “Commuter’s Newsletter” recounts a faculty assembly vote at the University of Maryland College Park to endorse an immediate end to the war in Vietnam, opposing repression against the Black Panther Party and urging the school administration to keep the school facilities open during the student strike.

Demonstrations against the Vietnam War and a student strike began at the school May 1, 1970 after President Richard Nixon ordered U.S. troops to invade Cambodia-widening the war. A national student strike was called May 4, 1970, the same day that the Ohio National Guard gunned down four students and wounded nine others at Kent State University in Ohio.

Students were asked to attend a meeting scheduled for May 11, 1970. The flyer also calls for students to support a liberal grading plan for classes of those engaged in the student strike.

The last page of the flyer reprints the faculty resolutions adopted at an assembly of 1,000 faculty members at Cole Field House May 7, 1970. The assembly was watched by 7,000 students in the stands.

The grading proposal advocated by the student strike committee was called the Chapeles proposal--so named for the government and politics professor who introduced it to the faculty assembly.

The alternative proposal was called the Alyward proposal named after a speech professor who chaired an ad hoc committee that developed it.

Both proposals protected striking students by offering options to complete their classes. The strikers’ proposal was more liberal and contained more safeguards against right-wing professors who may seek to punish strikers.

At a faculty assembly meeting, the more conservative Alyward proposal was adopted by the faculty 1583-698.

The strike, mass demonstrations and confrontations with the police and National Guard continued until May 22, 1970. The Guard occupied the campus until spring classes and exams were officially over.

An unsigned flyer urges Washington, D.C. area Christians to participate in the October 15, 1969 Moratorium against the Vietnam War.

The D.C. actions of the first Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam featured Coretta Scott King, are advertised in this leaflet.

King held a candle and led a night march from the Washington Monument grounds to the White House. A crowd estimated at 15-20,000 participated in the Washington, D.C. demonstration.

The moratorium was a soft approach to a nationwide strike against the war in Vietnam and involved upwards of two million people across the U.S.

Events were held at campuses and churches across the greater Washington, D.C. area during the day and were capped by the march led by Coretta Scott King.

A second moratorium was held the following month where upwards of 500,000 staged a massive march on Washington demanding an end to the war in Vietnam.

The unsigned card reads, "How is old Myersville these cold days. She looks good to me. You ought to be here now. Skating is just fine. Oh you Feb 22nd. I wonder where I will spend it this year. Best Regards. 4-12-11."

Nellie Pettingall lived on Main Street, Myersville, in 1911. Born in 1888, she was the daughter of Samuel H. Pettingall (1848-1929) and Amanda C. Poffenberger (1850-1931). She married steel mill worker W. Clyde Raines, who may well have been the author of this postcard. She was a graduate of Hood College and taught in Frederick County schools for a number of years. Nellie and Clyde had one son, William P. Raines. Nellie died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 18 Feb 1970. Clyde died in 1976. Both are buried at Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery.

An unsigned flyer unveils a calendar of events surrounding a week of celebrating women’s suffrage August 22-29, 1975.

Advertised events include a National Organization for Women fair; dinner with Andrea Dworkin; a concert with Cassie Culver, Willie Tyson and Barbara Cobb; a dance; a film festival; live and taped music produced by Womansound; the theatre production Approaching Simone; and a performance by the National Symphony.

August 26th each year marks the date the 19th Amendment became effective--granting women the right to vote nationwide.

An unsigned flyer advertises and teach-in and rally May 27, 1969 at Georgetown University to support the D.C. Nine who were charged with breaking in and destroying records in the Dow Chemical office in Washington, D.C. March 22, 1969.

The nine protesters smashed glass, hurled files out a fourth floor window and poured blood on the remaining files and furniture at the Dow Chemical offices at 15th & L Streets NW Washington, DC and awaited police to arrive for their arrest.

In a prepared statement, the nine noted that Dow seeks “profit in the production of napalm, defoliants and nerve gas.”

The nine acted because of Dow’s “refusal to accept responsibility for programmed destruction of human life.”

The actions were similar to those of the Catholic activist Berrigan brothers who used civil disobedience to disrupt the selective service system. A number of similar actions across the country were held and came to be called “hit and stay.”

On May 7, 1970, the nine were sentenced to terms ranging from three months to six years in jail. Their lawyer, Phillip J. Hirschkop was censured and sentenced to 30 days in jail for his trial conduct.

Seven of the nine appealed and won a reversal of their convictions at the U.S Court of Appeals in June 1972 that ruled that Judge John H. Pratt had erred when he denied the defendants the right to represent themselves. Hirschkop was cleared of contempt in a separate ruling in July 1972.

4 August 2013. In the grounds of Charles House, near the corner of White Hart Lane and Love Lane, Tottenham.

I guess every city has signs which are old and faded. Or those with some of the lettering or other parts missing — perhaps fallen off, or recycled by metal dealers. Plus some former signs which are now just bare posts with the original signboard missing.

To me, this Tottenham non-sign has a rusty, wooded charm. Although tucked behind a metal fence, the sign has no information to give; nothing to tell. A nearly invisible notice which almost nobody notices.

An unsigned, undated flyer calling on supporters of the Black Panther Party to protect the Party organizing headquarters in Washington, D.C. and to attend the May 1, 1970 rally in New Haven, Ct. in support of Panther chair Bobby Seale and New Haven Panther leader Ericka Huggins.

For a period of days, white supporters sat outside the National Committee to Combat Fascism, the Panther organizing office, on 18th Street NW as a buffer against possible police action until the immediate threat subsided.

Carpools were organized from Washington, D.C. to New Haven where 15,000 demonstrated for the Panther leaders’ freedom. They had been charged with murder, but the trial resulted in a hung jury and charges were dropped thereafter.

The D.C. police did raid the Panther’s on July 4, 1970 while they were celebrating on the holiday with community members.

The flyer was probably published in late April 1970.

Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur, California. April/2018

Pfeiffer Beach in the Big Sur area is definitely off the beaten path, but well worth the drive. Just south of Big Sur Station on Highway 1 is unsigned Sycamore Canyon Road which winds its way down to the shore. The two-mile long road is paved, but it is twisty and narrow so RV’s and trailers are not allowed. From the parking area you have a short walk down to the beach. At this location Sycamore Canyon Creek empties into the Pacific and a rocky point protects some of the sand at the cove. Waves crash hard all around and the beach north of here invites exploration at lower tides. Tide pools can be found here at low tide too. The focal point of the beach is Keyhole Rock which has an amazing natural arch at the base where salt water, and even the last rays of daylight, can pass through. This beach is beautiful at sunset and frequently professionally photographed. The north end of the beach has unique purple sand that comes from manganese garnet rocks in the cliffs, just be aware that sometimes clothing-optional folks have been spotted in this area. Pfeiffer Beach is on land within Los Padres National Forest, but is managed with help from the California Coastal Commission.

Unsigned but we're pretty sure about this one. It has all of the characteristics of early Miriam Haskell - the beautiful goldtone filigree work, the renaissance shape, the large central faux baroque pearl, the small chaton cut clear pave set, double layered rhinestones - all hand wired to the beautiful, intricate detailed filigree backing and with a bale to convert to a pendant. Absolutely delicious!

Syracuse

Decadrachm unsigned work by Kimon circa 404-400, AR 43.20 g. Quadriga at speed with prancing horses driven l. by female charioteer leaning forward with kentron in r. hand, holding reins in l.; above, Nike flying r. to crown her. Beneath heavy exergual line, display of military harness set on two steps: shield and crested helmet, cuirass between greaves; below to l., on the horizontal surface of the exergual line, AQLA. Rev. SYPAKOSIWN Head of Arethusa l., wearing earring with pendant and beaded necklace; wavy hair bound in front with ampyx and caught up behind by net. Around, three dolphins swimming, while a fourth makes dorsal contact with neck truncation. McClean 2732 (these dies). Jameson 1921 (these dies). Dewing 872 (these dies). Jongkees 10d (this coin).

Very rare. A very fascinating specimen of this important and a desirable issue struck on an

extremely broad flan. A very well accomplished portrait and a spectacular obverse,

wonderful old cabinet tone. Die-break on reverse, otherwise extremely fine

Ex Munzhandlung Basel 4, 1935, Prinz zu Waldeck, 514 and Leu 53, 1997, 34 sales.Scholars have long attempted to ascribe Kimon’s decadrachms to an historical event as they seem in every way to be commemorative medallions. The Syracusan defeat of the Athenian navy in 413 at first seems an ideal choice, though current thought on the dating of this issue favours the victorious actions of Syracuse in the otherwise devastating invasion of Sicily by the Carthaginians from 406 to 405 B.C. The most compelling reason to associate the Kimonian decadrachms with a military victory is the display of armour and weaponry that appears in the exergue along with the inscription ATLA, which indicates 'prizes', or at least 'agonistic contests'. Since it was a common practice of Greek soldiers to engrave dedicatory inscriptions on captured armour, a connection might be drawn between that practice and what we observe here. The obverse scene of a charioteer guiding his team through a bend is devoted entirely to victory. Despite their inherent dissimilarities, the four elements of the scene exist in harmony: the driver is calm and composed, the horses toss their heads wildly as they charge forward, Nike floats above as if undisturbed by the great contest below, and the display of arms and armour is fixed, as if monumental.

Unsigned, has a felt back, but surely by Ann Wynn Reeves, 1960's or 1970's. Note there are a couple of edge chips on the tile which have disappeared with the miracle of Photoshop.

An unsigned, unorthodox flyer advertising “one share” in a napalm-making company (Dow Chemical) during an ongoing demonstration outside the company’s offices at 15th and L Streets NW circa 1968.

The protest was designed to pressure Dow to cease providing napalm to the U.S. military and others. At the time, U.S. armed forces dropped napalm (a sticky substance used as a high temperature incendiary) indiscriminately throughout Indochina in an effort to defeat communist-led forces in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

Civilians, their villages and fields were often burned in the bombings.

The Dow demonstrations reached a dramatic peak when nine activists invaded the company’s District of Columbia offices March 22, 1969 and hurled files out of a fourth floor window, poured blood on remaining files and smashed furniture.

The nine (mostly religious activists) waited in the offices for arrest. They were convicted and sentenced to between three months and six years in prison. Their attorney, Phillip Hirschkop was cited for contempt.

Seven of the nine defendants appealed and had their convictions reversed based on the judge’s refusal to allow them to represent themselves. Hirschkop was cleared of contempt charges in a separate appeal.

For a PDF of this 8 x 10 flyer, one-sided flyer see washingtonareaspark.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1967-c...

Great unsigned heavy riffing young indie band from Wigan..

Fantastic band and great gig and atmosphere.

Don't judge them on the quality of my overpowered Fuji x100s sound recording - to hear them in all their glory go to Bandcamp or Soundcloud and search for Arcane Bronze.

No idea where this was published. Magazine illustration? Cover? Advertising? Probably mid- to late-fifties.

This Unsigned Music Awards 2016 was such great event. Bands were spectacular and full of energy.

It was great to team up with a Dayle for a music article. Well done Unsigned Music Awards team & sponsored

An unsigned flyer advertises a protest against vice-president elect Spiro Agnew January 19, 1969.

The protesters staged a counter-inaugural parade and were headed toward a counter inaugural ball to be held in a large tent near the Washington Monument when they stopped to gather on the Mall side of the Smithsonian.

As Agnew’s guests arrived in their finery, protesters picked up horse manure from U.S. Park Police horses and hurled it at the reception guests as they made their way down a long red carpet toward the Museum.

Police responded with a furious attempt to drive back the protesters, who in turn fought back against the police.

This unscheduled protest was over within 30 minutes. The following day protesters lined President Richard Nixon’s Inaugural parade route and threw rocks, vegetables, several smoke bombs and wads of paper at his limousine as it passed, later clashing with police.

"DENNY IS DYING WITH ME"

Child Victim of Father's Tragic Act

In House of Death

PLAYED WITH TOYS UNTIL THE END

(From N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.)

Dreading the publicity of possible divorce proceedings, George David Danaford, a Naval steward, on H.M.S. Philomel, decided to take his life.

But obsessed by his devotion to his baby son, and unable to bear the thought of leaving the child, Danaford made the boy a victim of the deadly gas fumes which ended both their lives.

Little Dennis Danaford, as he played about the room, was all unconscious of the creeping death that rose from the gas stove to envelop him and his father.

Together they died, the boy surrounded by his toys, and at the inquest, held at Auckland, the Coroner found a verdict of suicide against the father. The cause of the child's death, he found, was due to gas poisoning while being kept in the room by his father, who was committing suicide.

In the early hours of the morning of the tragedy, the mother, distracted by fear for her child, who had been taken away by his father at noon the previous day, and had not returned, called in the police and, with friends with whom she was staying, visited her late home. She had left her husband, taking the child with her, a week previously.

Warned by the smell of gas, the police carefully forced an entrance by the front door, which was barricaded by a large box. Thence they made their way into the kitchen and discovered Danaford's body with his head in a gas oven, while two feet away lay poor little Dennis, surrounded by his toys and past all human aid.

At the inquest, held the same day by Mr. F. K. Hunt, the coroner for the district, it was disclosed that the child died some two hours after its father, and though notes were found, indicating Danaford's intention to "take Dennis with him," in the circumstances a verdict of suicide and murder could not be brought in.

The bodies were identified by Henry Bolton, of Cautley Road, Devonport, to whose house Mrs. Danaford had gone when she left her husband. Danaford, said Bolton, was a first-class steward in the Navy and was Commander Nelson Glover's steward on H.M.S. Philomel.

Up to a week previously, Danaford and his wife had lived together in Kiwi Road, Devonport, with their son, Dennis Harold, aged 2 years and 11 months.

On January 16 Mrs. Danaford came to live with him and his wife as a result of cruel treatment from her husband and threats that he would kill her.

Bolton said that one day Dennis; the boy; came to his house and called out for Mrs. Bolton to go round to his home. When she arrived there she found Mrs. Koa Isabel Danaford unconscious on the floor and bleeding from the mouth, the result, so Mrs. Danaford told her, of a blow from her husband.

It was after that she left her home and went to the Boltons.

On another occasion, said Bolton, he returned from work about 11 p.m. and found Mrs Danaford very agitated because. Dennis had not been brought back by his father.

It appeared that the father had called to take the boy out at 1 p.m., but as the child was asleep he returned at 1.30 when the two went off, together.

At Mrs. Danaford's request, Bolton went round to the house in Kiwi Road to see if they had gone there, but it was in darkness and he could get no response to his knocking and calling. He returned home and went back to the house, this time accompanied by his wife and mother, but again without any result.

About 11.55, he went to inform the police, Mrs. Danaford and Mrs. Bolton accompanying him. They once more passed the house and knocked and then went on to the police station.

Three sheets of paper and two playing cards, the three of hearts and the joker, found in the house by the police, were identified by Bolton as being covered with Danaford's writing. He said that for some time he had been suspicious that the steward, was not entirely sane. Some days he appeared to be quite all right, but on others signs were not wanting that his mentality was not absolutely normal.

According to Bolton, the Danafords had been separated on a previous occasion, the reason being that Danaford had been mixed up with other women.

Replying to Mr. R. A. Singer, who represented the widow, Bolton said he had known the couple for three years. There had been continuous ill-treatment of the wife by the husband, who had "never done the right thing by her all along."

Constable Butler, who with Sergeant O'Brien accompanied the search party to the house, said they reached it about 12.50 a.m. On approaching the front steps he detected a smell of gas.

The front door was locked and bolted and they found it barricaded with a large box. Forcing an entry, they went to the kitchen, the door of which was closed, but not locked. The crack at the bottom had been stuffed with rags and "paper. The whole house was full of gas.

In the kitchen they discovered the body of Danaford with his head and shoulders inside a gas oven, fully clothed but for his coat. About two feet away, the little boy was lying on the floor face downwards, surrounded by his toys.

While the man's body was quite cold and death had apparently taken place about six hours before, that of the child was still slightly warm, and he appeared to have died some two hours after his father.

In a room leading out of the kitchen, the door of which was locked, the constable found a note which was produced in Court. It was one of those identified by Bolton as having been written by Danaford and contained the desire that "Dennis is to have anything that is my property, a half-share m the house and all its contents." The note was unsigned, but seemed to indicate that at the "time of writing, Danaford had not decided that his son should die.

Later, said Butler, he found two more notes and the two playing cards.

The second letter contained the words: "I have asked Denny who he wants to go with and he is dying with me."

All the letters were more or less incoherent and contained quite unfounded accusations against the wife and threats of haunting her were also made, while on the three of Hearts was written, "Your Death Card, Mrs. Danaford."

What exactly was in the demented man's mind when he scrawled across the three of hearts, "Your Death Card Mrs. Danaford" will now never be known, but if he intended to cast any imputation on his wife's character by his choice of that suit and number, it was in distinct variance with a letter received by Mr. Singer on the morning of the discovery of the tragedy, from Danaford's solicitor in which it was specifically stated that no slur was cast on Mrs. Danaford nor was any blame for the separation attachable to her.

They showed the state of the unfortunate man's mind.

"Danaford was an erratic man," said Butler, in conclusion, "and the police were called to his house last June because of' his violent conduct."

Permission was obtained from the coroner by Mr. Singer to make a short statement to the effect that Mrs. Danaford called on him when he sent her to a doctor, who gave a certificate to the effect that bruises were found on her head consistent with the account she gave of receiving them from her husband.

A letter was sent to the man reminding him of the terms of the separation, while, later, Mr. Singer received a letter from the solicitor consulted by Danaford in which it was stated that he would consent to certain terms and make provision for his wife.

This note also stated, according to Mr. Singer that no blame was attachable to Mrs. Danaford nor were any imputations made against her character.

That concluded the evidence and Mr. Hunt, S.M., returned a verdict of suicide from gas-poisoning with regard to Danaford, while his finding in the case of the child was that he died from gas-poisoning, being kept in the room by his father who was committing suicide.

The coroner added that the letters left by Danaford indicated his intention that the child should die.
