Accepted ROUGH, pencil on paper draftwork for BA/MF, BH Records, BOC & Hot Topic.

This is going be a compilation CD featuring a few big, unsigned and independent artists such "Kut U Up" who were featured with blink-182 in "Riding in Vans with Boys" and Mike Felumlee of Alkaline Trio.

These CDs will be professionally pressed by Broken Heart Records and sold online at Hot Topic. All profits will go to charity.

...on a car parked in front of the owner's house. Hmm. Selfish, much? (Camera phone shot)

(n.b. for those not residents of the Boston area: in many towns around here, once one shovels out an on-street parking spot after a snowstorm, one "marks" it with something to indicate that you shoveled the spot and you fully intend it to be available for parking when you return. Supposedly this custom is acceptable for up to 48 hours after the storm, though I've seen spots "claimed" for as much as a week, even though the cleared snow was probably shoveled into another nearby spot. The "less friendly" methods of revenge for "stealing" such marked spots include scratching the paint of the car with a key or letting the air out of tires.)

"Gen. Stewart was delighted to provide his autograph for these artifacts. He said to send his greetings."

Even after the Challenger accident on January 28, 1986, not all training activity stopped. Some payload specialists continued to train, although most of them would never fly.

Twenty days after the accident, the preliminary crew activity plan for STS-61-K was issued, with a planned launch date of Aug. 18, and a landing seven days later on Aug. 25. The payload for this flight was the postponed Spacelab EOM-1 - STS-51-H - which was combined with its reflight, for EOM-1/2.

No orbiter was given in this plan, but published reports say EOM-1/2 would have flown Atlantis. Originally, EOM-1/2 would have flown Columbia:

"An excellent example of the need to change the manifest because of operational constraints is reflected by the landing weight on STS 61-K. This mission, an Earth Observation Mission (EOM) Spacelab flight, first was planned for OV-102 because of the desire for a high-power, long-duration mission (i.e., only OV-102 has the capability to carry a fifth cryoset to provide extra power). As the payload definition matured, the payload configuration changed from only a long module to a long module plus a mission peculiar experiment support structure (MPESS)." [Rogers Commission]

EOM was in turn a reflight of some Spacelab-1 hardware. From a June 1984 NASA release:

Release No. 84-029 June 7, 1984

NASA ANNOUNCES CREW MEMBERS FOR FUTURE SPACE SHUTTLE FLIGHTS

The flight crew for Space Shuttle flight 51-H and mission specialist astronauts for mission 61-E were announced today by NASA.

Veteran astronaut Vance D. Brand will command mission 51-H, scheduled for launch in November 1985, using the orbiter Atlantis. Brand was commander of STS-5, the first operational Shuttle flight in November 1982 and mission 41-B, the first use of the manned maneuvering unit in February 1984.

Other members of the 51-H crew are Michael J. Smith, pilot; Robert C. Springer, Dr. Owen K. Garriott and European Space Agency astronaut, Dr. Claude Nicollier, mission specialists; and Dr.

Michael L. Lampton and Dr. Byron K. Lichtenberg, payload specialists.

Payload on Flight 51-H will be Earth Observation Mission-1 (EOM-I), a reflight of nine Spacelab-1 experiments in the areas of space plasma physics, solar physics, atmospheric physics, astronomy and earth observations. A short Spacelab habitable module and a pallet of experiment hardware will occupy the cargo bay.

When 51H got postponed, Smith went to become pilot of 51L (and later, pilot of 61-I, see documentation on this Flickr account elsewhere.)

61K was to have carried seven crewmembers. Three are mentioned in this plan - S. David Griggs as pilot; Robert L. Stewart as Mission Specialist 2; and Owen Garriott as MS1.

The other astronauts, named in a November 1985 astronaut flight information manifest, are Vance D. Brand, who would have carried over from 51H as commander, and Claude Nicollier, presumably as MS3.

That means 61K would have carried two Payload Specialists. Four are named on the distribution list: Dirk Frimout, Michael Lampton, Byron Lichtenberg and Charles R. Chappell, all from Marshall SPC.

Published reports elsewhere state Lampton and Lichtenberg, the latter who flew on Spacelab 1 and the former who was Lichtenberg's alternate for that flight, would have flown.

When flights resumed, EOM was renamed ATLAS, and flew in spring 1992 as STS-45. There was a crew of seven, but ATLAS-1 was commanded by Charles F. Bolden Jr., as Brand had left NASA by then. Griggs died in 1989 and Brian Duffy was pilot of the flight.

Mission specialists were C, Michael Foale, David C. Leestma and Kathryn D. Sullivan - Garriott and Stewart also having left NASA by that time. Frimout took Lampton's place, the latter medically disqualified in 1991, and Lichtenberg flew - the only original crew member to do so!

Nicollier was still an astronaut, but presumably could not fly due to his training for STS-46, which also flew in 1992.

I sent this to Lampton, but he returned it unsigned (he may have thought it was backing for the photo I sent, which he did return signed.) Garriott signed this in-person at an Explorers Club presentation on 4 Sept. 2013 in New York, NY.

And when an opportunity came to send this to Stewart, I did so, through the Kitsap Community Prayer Breakfast at the Kitsap Golf and Country Club on 2 Oct. 2014 in Bremerton, Washington.

Nicollier signed this in-person during Family Day at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center, 25 April 2015.

Blinder are an unsigned three-piece grunge band from Brighton who put on a dynamic live performance. Guitarist and singer Schosti constantly struts around the stage and so I wanted to capture some of that movement. I was particularly pleased with this shot because I was trying out the effect of combining a slow shutter speed together with zooming out rapidly to produce the motion-artefact.

Strobist info:

This shot was taken at stage right.

Main light was a speedlight pointing at the front of the stage

Two other speedlights were positioned at the back of the stage on the left and the right, gelled red and magenta

Triggered wirelessly by Commlite Comtrig T320's

Shutter speed was 1/25

A unsigned, undated three-page flyer (issued between May 8 and 10, 1970 and confirmed to have been issued by members of the student strike committee) dubbed “Commuter’s Newsletter” recounts a faculty assembly vote at the University of Maryland College Park to endorse an immediate end to the war in Vietnam, opposing repression against the Black Panther Party and urging the school administration to keep the school facilities open during the student strike.

Demonstrations against the Vietnam War and a student strike began at the school May 1, 1970 after President Richard Nixon ordered U.S. troops to invade Cambodia-widening the war. A national student strike was called May 4, 1970, the same day that the Ohio National Guard gunned down four students and wounded nine others at Kent State University in Ohio.

Students were asked to attend a meeting scheduled for May 11, 1970. The flyer also calls for students to support a liberal grading plan for classes of those engaged in the student strike.

The last page of the flyer reprints the faculty resolutions adopted at an assembly of 1,000 faculty members at Cole Field House May 7, 1970. The assembly was watched by 7,000 students in the stands.

The grading proposal advocated by the student strike committee was called the Chapeles proposal--so named for the government and politics professor who introduced it to the faculty assembly.

The alternative proposal was called the Alyward proposal named after a speech professor who chaired an ad hoc committee that developed it.

Both proposals protected striking students by offering options to complete their classes. The strikers’ proposal was more liberal and contained more safeguards against right-wing professors who may seek to punish strikers.

At a faculty assembly meeting, the more conservative Alyward proposal was adopted by the faculty 1583-698.

The strike, mass demonstrations and confrontations with the police and National Guard continued until May 22, 1970. The Guard occupied the campus until spring classes and exams were officially over.

An unsigned, short pamphlet lists a calendar of planned anti-Vietnam War events in the greater Washington, D.C. area for a spring 1972 “People’s Offensive.”

Given the list of non-violent civil disobedience activities and the recognition of Ho Chi Minh’s birthday, it was probably published by the People’s Coalition for Peace and Justice (PCPJ) or one of its affiliates.

The antiwar movement had broken into two major coalitions at this point—PCPJ which raised issues besides ending the war in its demands (such as justice for black Americans and an end to poverty) and sponsored civil disobedience and the National Peace Action Coalition (NPAC) for which the Vietnam War was its single issue and did not support civil disobedience.

The two groups’ slogans differed also.

PCPJ favored “Sign the Treaty”—the People’s Peace Treaty negotiated between North and South Vietnamese and American students and supported by Provisional Revolutionary Government leaders.

Whereas NPAC favored “Out Now.”

Two historically rival groups also split between the two coalitions—The Communist Party USA supporting the PCPJ and the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party favoring NPAC.

An unsigned flyer unveils a calendar of events surrounding a week of celebrating women’s suffrage August 22-29, 1975.

Advertised events include a National Organization for Women fair; dinner with Andrea Dworkin; a concert with Cassie Culver, Willie Tyson and Barbara Cobb; a dance; a film festival; live and taped music produced by Womansound; the theatre production Approaching Simone; and a performance by the National Symphony.

August 26th each year marks the date the 19th Amendment became effective--granting women the right to vote nationwide.

Original held in the Bonnie Atwood papers, 1965-2005, Collection, Special Collections and Archives, James Branch Cabell Library, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA.

The unsigned card reads, "How is old Myersville these cold days. She looks good to me. You ought to be here now. Skating is just fine. Oh you Feb 22nd. I wonder where I will spend it this year. Best Regards. 4-12-11."

Nellie Pettingall lived on Main Street, Myersville, in 1911. Born in 1888, she was the daughter of Samuel H. Pettingall (1848-1929) and Amanda C. Poffenberger (1850-1931). She married steel mill worker W. Clyde Raines, who may well have been the author of this postcard. She was a graduate of Hood College and taught in Frederick County schools for a number of years. Nellie and Clyde had one son, William P. Raines. Nellie died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 18 Feb 1970. Clyde died in 1976. Both are buried at Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery.

Heading south, Great Barton is the last village before arriving at Bury St. Edmunds, and the village itself is divided by the busy road. I'm sure, once it was a lovely village, but now trucks and cars thunder past, mostly ignoring the speed limits.

As you leave the centre of the village, past the old village school, there is a sign pointing down a leafy lane directing the visitor to the church. I had seen that sign many times and almost tempted to go down to investigate.

You have to travel about a mile down the lane, past an old manor house now a business centre, until you come to Holy Innocents on the right, a wonderful knapped flint church, glistening in the weak autumn sunshine.

First thing I noticed was the white stone used for the structure between flints, created a chequerboard pattern, which was very impressive. But when I mentioned this to the warden who was inside, she said she had never noticed, but after leaving came back to tell me she could see the pattern now.

Most eyecatching for me were the multitude of payer-kneelers on the shelves of the pews, creating a colourful display, contrasting with the austere structure of the church. Light streamed through the vibrant Victorian windows, which to my eye are of a very good standard indeed.

Holy Innocents seems to be open every day.

------------------------------------------

It had been so long since I last visited Great Barton that I really did not remember the village at all. It is a large place, a bit of Bury St Edmunds broken off really, only the railway line separating it from the Moreton Hall Estate. The church sits a good half mile from the village, down a narrow dusty lane. A large hare sat on the road in front of me as I left the village, and loped along just ahead in no particular hurry until we reached the church gates, where he turned and looked at me, and then preceded me into the graveyard. It was hard not to imagine that he was an omen of some kind.

Holy Innocents is one of those spectacular 15th Century rebuilds that East Anglia did so well, and is all the more so for being so remote. Mortlock calls it 'handsome', which is about right. The big tower rides high above the clerestory and aisles, the long, earlier chancel extending beyond. It has much in common with Rougham, just across the A14. Windows to aisle and clerestory create something of the wall of glass effect so beloved of the later Middle Ages. Unusually, there is a tomb recess in the outside of the south wall of the chancel which was possibly for the donor of the chancel.

The 15th Century south porch carries a later sun dial with the inscription periunt et imputantor, which means something like 'they perish and are judged'.

You step inside to a big church. Despite the windows of the south aisle being filled with coloured glass, the church is full of airy light and space. This is accentuated by the hugeness of the chancel arch, which goes with the 13th Century chancel - that is to say, nave and aisles were built to scale with it as a starting point. In such a great space the furnishings do not intrude, and they are pretty much all the work of the 19th Century restoration here. They are a good counterpoint to the spectacular glass of the south aisle. The first window is by the William Morris workshop, with the figures by Edward Burne-Jones of Faith Hope and Charity. All three are shown, unusually, as men. Faith is the Roman centurion at the foot of the cross, Hope is Joshua and Charity is the Good Samaritan.

Beside it is a window which is somewhat bizarre. A number of Suffolk churches have windows to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887, but none, I think, are quite like this one. The stately queen sits with a look of indigestion upon her face among angels carrying her crown and the Bible. She is flanked by two rather unlikely fellow monarchs, the Queen of Sheba with a snake of temptation and her motto Wisdom is better than rubies and a positively louche Queen Esther with If I perish, I perish. Above Victoria's head in a scroll is inscribed In her tongue is the Law of Kindness from the Book of Proverbs. All in all, a remarkable piece.

Ther other window in the aisle depicts the Ascension flanked by the Nativity and the Resurrection. The Nativity scene is particularly good. It is unsigned, but I wondered if it was by AK Nicholson.

But for the oddest window of all, you have to step up into the chancel. Here, on the south side, is another depiction of the Resurrection and the Ascension. These appear in the upper part, and in the lower part are the Disciples watching the Ascension and the Roman soldiers asleep at the Resurrection. However, these lower parts have been put under the wrong upper parts, and the sleeping soldiers are missing the Ascension and the Disciples are watching the Resurrection! Such a blunder can only have happened in the studio, when the cartoons were being laid out before the glass was made.

Holy Innocents is an interesting dedication, and an unusual one for an Anglican church, especially a medieval one. Bear in mind that, in the Middle Ages, churches were dedicated to feast days, especially of Saints, and not the Saints themselves. Holy Innocents is celebrated on December 28th, and remembers Herod's massacre of the babies of Bethlehem. It would have been a more common dedication in medieval times. Here, it is probably a relic of Anglo-catholic days, and the 19th century revival of church dedications; but it may also be the original dedication of the church. It is quite clear that this church enjoys a High Church character this day, and is one of the few village churches in the Bury area where you can light a candle when you say a prayer.

Like all good High Church parishes, Great Barton keeps Holy Innocents open every day, and there is even a Fair Trade shop where you can make your purchases and perform a work of mercy at the same time, a fine opportunity.

Back outside, the churchyard is one of the best in Suffolk to potter about in. It is vast, with a good 300 years-worth of headstones. While exploring, you might notice that the very north-east corner of the churchyard is cordoned off by a low brick wall, and contains but a small number of graves. They are to the Bunbury family, who are also remembered with mural monuments in the chancel of the church. The Bunburys had lived at Barton Hall, but it was destroyed by fire in 1914. Sir Henry Bunbury achieved a place in popular history in the early 19th century when he was the foreign office official who had the job of breaking the news to Napoleon that he was to be exiled to St Helena. The school history books that speak of the defeat of Napoleon have long since been consigned to the skips. Now, all that remains is the light summer breeze in the corner of a Suffolk churchyard.

----------------------------------------

The Church is dedicated to the Holy Innocents. These were the Jewish boys under the age of two who were massacred by King Herod. This was after the visit from the wise men in search of the king of the Jews. These children are probably the first martyrs to suffer for our Lord. All Christian churches are built to oppose this injustice. Holy Innocents Great Barton is one of only five churches in the country dedicated to the Holy Innocents. It is most unusual for a mediaeval church.

Wool was a very important industry in East Anglia. Woolpit and Lavenham are local churches built from the proceeds of the trade. Gt. Barton was on the edge of the wool producing area. 'Dog Pews' were put in the Church in honour of the dogs who helped the shepherds during the years when wool was a very important product of the county. The shepherd's dogs were very important to them, and far too valuable to leave outside while the shepherds were in church. The Dog Pews were situated in the back of the church, and the shepherds were encouraged to bring their dogs in with them. The shepherds were also allowed to sleep (with their dogs) in the porch. These pews can now be found at the front of the church and are one of the many items around Holy Innocents that tell a fascinating story of the church's history.

Great Barton is believed to have been a settlement of the Iceni tribe before the Roman occupation of England. It is believed that Barton mere was occupied by early lake-dwellers. Records mention the parish in the time of Edward the Confessor, however it was not until about 950 AD that the parish was given into the care of the abbey of Bury St Edmunds. The abbey held it until the monastery was dissolved in 1539. It is almost certain that a Saxon Church existed here- it is probable that this was a simple wooden building rebuilt in stone by the Normans. In 1086, the Domesday Book states that the church possessed 50 acres of land, valued at £20. The chancel was erected and the font was installed in the late 13th century. These are the earliest parts of the present church. Over the centuries, various additions were made to the church when funds became available. It was the job of the Rector to maintain the chancel, whereas other parts were maintained by the parishioners. In the 15th century they erected the aisles, clerestory and tower. Much money was left to the church for restoration in the 15th century, including from the Rector of that time, William Howerdly. The following two centuries saw the destruction of many parts of the church due to the Reformation and Puritan purge. At this time the majority of the angels in the roof were destroyed. Their remains can still be seen today. Little work was done on the church until the Victorian era when major restoration work began.

The list of incumbents goes back to 1320 when the parish was in the diocese of Norwich. In 1823 it was in the Diocese of Ely, and in 1914 it became a member of the newly formed Diocese of St. Edmundsbury and Ipswich.

4 August 2013. In the grounds of Charles House, near the corner of White Hart Lane and Love Lane, Tottenham.

I guess every city has signs which are old and faded. Or those with some of the lettering or other parts missing — perhaps fallen off, or recycled by metal dealers. Plus some former signs which are now just bare posts with the original signboard missing.

To me, this Tottenham non-sign has a rusty, wooded charm. Although tucked behind a metal fence, the sign has no information to give; nothing to tell. A nearly invisible notice which almost nobody notices.

An unsigned flyer urges Washington, D.C. area Christians to participate in the October 15, 1969 Moratorium against the Vietnam War.

The D.C. actions of the first Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam featured Coretta Scott King, are advertised in this leaflet.

King held a candle and led a night march from the Washington Monument grounds to the White House. A crowd estimated at 15-20,000 participated in the Washington, D.C. demonstration.

The moratorium was a soft approach to a nationwide strike against the war in Vietnam and involved upwards of two million people across the U.S.

Events were held at campuses and churches across the greater Washington, D.C. area during the day and were capped by the march led by Coretta Scott King.

A second moratorium was held the following month where upwards of 500,000 staged a massive march on Washington demanding an end to the war in Vietnam.

An unsigned, undated flyer calling on supporters of the Black Panther Party to protect the Party organizing headquarters in Washington, D.C. and to attend the May 1, 1970 rally in New Haven, Ct. in support of Panther chair Bobby Seale and New Haven Panther leader Ericka Huggins.

For a period of days, white supporters sat outside the National Committee to Combat Fascism, the Panther organizing office, on 18th Street NW as a buffer against possible police action until the immediate threat subsided.

Carpools were organized from Washington, D.C. to New Haven where 15,000 demonstrated for the Panther leaders’ freedom. They had been charged with murder, but the trial resulted in a hung jury and charges were dropped thereafter.

The D.C. police did raid the Panther’s on July 4, 1970 while they were celebrating on the holiday with community members.

The flyer was probably published in late April 1970.

An unsigned flyer advertises and teach-in and rally May 27, 1969 at Georgetown University to support the D.C. Nine who were charged with breaking in and destroying records in the Dow Chemical office in Washington, D.C. March 22, 1969.

The nine protesters smashed glass, hurled files out a fourth floor window and poured blood on the remaining files and furniture at the Dow Chemical offices at 15th & L Streets NW Washington, DC and awaited police to arrive for their arrest.

In a prepared statement, the nine noted that Dow seeks “profit in the production of napalm, defoliants and nerve gas.”

The nine acted because of Dow’s “refusal to accept responsibility for programmed destruction of human life.”

The actions were similar to those of the Catholic activist Berrigan brothers who used civil disobedience to disrupt the selective service system. A number of similar actions across the country were held and came to be called “hit and stay.”

On May 7, 1970, the nine were sentenced to terms ranging from three months to six years in jail. Their lawyer, Phillip J. Hirschkop was censured and sentenced to 30 days in jail for his trial conduct.

Seven of the nine appealed and won a reversal of their convictions at the U.S Court of Appeals in June 1972 that ruled that Judge John H. Pratt had erred when he denied the defendants the right to represent themselves. Hirschkop was cleared of contempt in a separate ruling in July 1972.

Unsigned but we're pretty sure about this one. It has all of the characteristics of early Miriam Haskell - the beautiful goldtone filigree work, the renaissance shape, the large central faux baroque pearl, the small chaton cut clear pave set, double layered rhinestones - all hand wired to the beautiful, intricate detailed filigree backing and with a bale to convert to a pendant. Absolutely delicious!

Date: 1950s

Syracuse

Decadrachm unsigned work by Kimon circa 404-400, AR 43.20 g. Quadriga at speed with prancing horses driven l. by female charioteer leaning forward with kentron in r. hand, holding reins in l.; above, Nike flying r. to crown her. Beneath heavy exergual line, display of military harness set on two steps: shield and crested helmet, cuirass between greaves; below to l., on the horizontal surface of the exergual line, AQLA. Rev. SYPAKOSIWN Head of Arethusa l., wearing earring with pendant and beaded necklace; wavy hair bound in front with ampyx and caught up behind by net. Around, three dolphins swimming, while a fourth makes dorsal contact with neck truncation. McClean 2732 (these dies). Jameson 1921 (these dies). Dewing 872 (these dies). Jongkees 10d (this coin).

Very rare. A very fascinating specimen of this important and a desirable issue struck on an

extremely broad flan. A very well accomplished portrait and a spectacular obverse,

wonderful old cabinet tone. Die-break on reverse, otherwise extremely fine

Ex Munzhandlung Basel 4, 1935, Prinz zu Waldeck, 514 and Leu 53, 1997, 34 sales.Scholars have long attempted to ascribe Kimon’s decadrachms to an historical event as they seem in every way to be commemorative medallions. The Syracusan defeat of the Athenian navy in 413 at first seems an ideal choice, though current thought on the dating of this issue favours the victorious actions of Syracuse in the otherwise devastating invasion of Sicily by the Carthaginians from 406 to 405 B.C. The most compelling reason to associate the Kimonian decadrachms with a military victory is the display of armour and weaponry that appears in the exergue along with the inscription ATLA, which indicates 'prizes', or at least 'agonistic contests'. Since it was a common practice of Greek soldiers to engrave dedicatory inscriptions on captured armour, a connection might be drawn between that practice and what we observe here. The obverse scene of a charioteer guiding his team through a bend is devoted entirely to victory. Despite their inherent dissimilarities, the four elements of the scene exist in harmony: the driver is calm and composed, the horses toss their heads wildly as they charge forward, Nike floats above as if undisturbed by the great contest below, and the display of arms and armour is fixed, as if monumental.

Great unsigned heavy riffing young indie band from Wigan..

Fantastic band and great gig and atmosphere.

Don't judge them on the quality of my overpowered Fuji x100s sound recording - to hear them in all their glory go to Bandcamp or Soundcloud and search for Arcane Bronze.
