This is a fine example of a commercial wood engraving made for a hardware catalogue. This image would have had an electrotype made from it, and the electro would have been used for printing. The surrounding wood has been left for support and would have been removed for the finished image. The whiteish caste to the surface of the wood is evidence of the image being originally photographed onto the block: the engraver then using the photo as a guide for engraving.
