The Syracusan defeat of the Athenian navy in 413 at first seems an ideal choice, though current thought on the dating of this issue favours the victorious actions of Syracuse in the otherwise devastating invasion of Sicily by the Carthaginians from 406 to 405 B.C. The most compelling reason to associate the Kimonian decadrachms with a military victory is the display of armour and weaponry that appears in the exergue along with the inscription ATLA, which indicates 'prizes', or at least 'agonistic contests'. Since it was a common practice of Greek soldiers to engrave dedicatory inscriptions on captured armour, a connection might be drawn between that practice and what we observe here. The obverse scene of a charioteer guiding his team through a bend is devoted entirely to victory. Despite their inherent dissimilarities, the four elements of the scene exist in harmony: the driver is calm and composed, the horses toss their heads wildly as they charge forward, Nike floats above as if undisturbed by the great contest below, and the display of arms and armour is fixed, as if monumental.

Unsigned, has a felt back, but surely by Ann Wynn Reeves, 1960's or 1970's. Note there are a couple of edge chips on the tile which have disappeared with the miracle of Photoshop.
An unsigned, unorthodox flyer advertising “one share” in a napalm-making company (Dow Chemical) during an ongoing demonstration outside the company’s offices at 15th and L Streets NW circa 1968.
The protest was designed to pressure Dow to cease providing napalm to the U.S. military and others. At the time, U.S. armed forces dropped napalm (a sticky substance used as a high temperature incendiary) indiscriminately throughout Indochina in an effort to defeat communist-led forces in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
Civilians, their villages and fields were often burned in the bombings.
The Dow demonstrations reached a dramatic peak when nine activists invaded the company’s District of Columbia offices March 22, 1969 and hurled files out of a fourth floor window, poured blood on remaining files and smashed furniture.
The nine (mostly religious activists) waited in the offices for arrest. They were convicted and sentenced to between three months and six years in prison. Their attorney, Phillip Hirschkop was cited for contempt.
Seven of the nine defendants appealed and had their convictions reversed based on the judge’s refusal to allow them to represent themselves. Hirschkop was cleared of contempt charges in a separate appeal.

An unsigned flyer advertises a protest against vice-president elect Spiro Agnew January 19, 1969.
The protesters staged a counter-inaugural parade and were headed toward a counter inaugural ball to be held in a large tent near the Washington Monument when they stopped to gather on the Mall side of the Smithsonian.
As Agnew’s guests arrived in their finery, protesters picked up horse manure from U.S. Park Police horses and hurled it at the reception guests as they made their way down a long red carpet toward the Museum.
Police responded with a furious attempt to drive back the protesters, who in turn fought back against the police.
This unscheduled protest was over within 30 minutes. The following day protesters lined President Richard Nixon’s Inaugural parade route and threw rocks, vegetables, several smoke bombs and wads of paper at his limousine as it passed, later clashing with police.

CRUMB R. ROBERT-AUTHENTIC UNSIGNED LITHO ON CANVAS -20 X 16 INCHES-FRAMED-EXTREMELY RARE!!!
The silkscreen was made originally as a giant decalcomonia remember those? Like a fake tattoo. You used to be able to wet them and slide off the image onto your skin. Same concept, except the decal was designed to be dipped in a big pail of water and slide off the backing paper to be applied to the side of a van.
Except I saved this one. And kept it in a frame. The ripples are the backing paper. It was a kind of heavy duty butcher paper with a smooth side the image was printed to. The medium was a kind of vinyl ink.
The original was also used to make tee-shirts (red on white). I have the original, given to me by Robert Crumb, and it's not for sale.

This is an original print from the most celebrated – and the most imitated of the Zap Comix pantheon.

OK, so there's a story behind this piece. Back in 1975, we were all living in a loft in the West Village – my college chum George DiCaprio and his wife Irmalin and their little 1-year-old Leo, my two cabdriving buddies Doug and Scott, and me. It was a communal situation, each of us with his own corner of the huge former industrial space. George was the guru of our intellectual cadre, based as it was on things subterranean and artistic. The intersection of William Burroughs, William Shakespeare and William Blake with a little bit of Tim Leary thrown in. George was already active in the comix subculture that would one day become his full-time job. He'd already put out the first issue of Greaser, a New York answer to the Bay-area graphic tomes that were all the rage.
I remember it was a hot New York summer when we got a 2-week visit from Robert Crumb and his Cheap Suit Serenaders sideckick Robert Armstrong, illustrator-maven of Mickey Rat. My buddy Scott gave up his room for the visiting royalty and Crumb expressed his appreciation by making a couple of illustrations that Scottie could use for his lobster clambake business out on Long Island. He did wind up using one of these, the man eating the lobster, as the logo for the outfit. I designed a silkscreen press and we made up tee shirts with the image that all the workers wore as they brought this big step van around to Hamptons estates doing their mobile catering thing.
I also made up a huge silkscreen decal that we plastered to the side of this step van. I still have one of these in a frame after all these years. And I have the original transfers from Crumb's pen-and-ink drawings on plain paper, which we used to make the silkscreen masters. Those silkscreen frames are long gone but I kept the master prints used to make 'em in a cellophane envelope all these years in my zippered loose-leaf journal. There are two of them – two the world – and they are not for sale.

Bishop’s Court School closed in 1986 and when being demolished in 1987 a workman found the Scout Record Book which recorded the history of the 1st Freshfield Bishop’s Court Scout Troop. www.flickr.com/photos/formbycivicsociety/23007725839/in/a...
This covers the history of the Troop between 1915 and 1953 and the image above is a copy from that book.
Also within the book is a hand written, unsigned and undated, history of the school which reads as follows :-
“Miss Gosford had a school for small boys and girls at a house called “West Royden” on the corner of York Road and Three Tuns Lane. Later Miss Emma decided to open a school for boys and through the help of Father Welfred Carr of Our Lady’s Formby they procured a large house in Victoria Road to which they moved in 1892. (This is now thought to be Vaughan House, corner of Victoria Road and Gores Lane, which was demolished in about 1976)
They had not named the school when their first visitors, brought by Father Parr, was “Bishop Whiteside” so that evening they decided to call it Bishops Court.
About 1905 they had to build as the school was growing so they then built on a West wing and that was finished by 1907 and opened and blessed by Bishop Whiteside . . “
The school moved to Wrigleys Lane in 1924 and closed in 1986. It seems strange that neither the book nor documents make any mention of the move of the school from Victoria Road to Wrigleys Lane.
