Early Cycladic period (3200 – 2000 BC)

This period was mainly characterized by the development of metallurgy, maritime navigation and communication. A multitude and wide range of bronze tools and weapons, swift-moving ships impelled by oars depicted on clay (frying pans) or metal (lead boat models) attest to the heyday of this early period of the Cyclades which played a pivotal role in the trade of materials and goods as well as the exchange of ideas, being in the centre of maritime communication routes. Metals, obsidian and marble, unique raw materials found on the Cyclades, were spread throughout the Aegean Sea. The marble vases and figurines, the kraters -known as “”kandiles”” (votive lamps)- and the violin-shaped figurines became initially synonymous with the Cycladic culture. Later, the kylikes and the “”palettes””, but chiefly the figurines with folded arms, with their widespread dispersal, turned into the symbol of the Cycladic achievement, whereas simultaneously, the creation of statues, namely life-size figures, and certain three-dimensional figurines (e.g. musicians) manifests the progress and innovation of the Cycladic art. Found at the steam charging point at Kemsley Mill on 1st August 1969, 'Unique', a 2-4-0 fireless locomotive built by William Bagnall (works No.2216 of 1923) certainly lived up to its name. It survived into preservation and has a home on the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway as a static exhibit.

When it comes to unique, iconic examples of midcentury modern homes, it’s hard to find one quirkier than John Lautner’s “Rawlins House” on Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA.

Built in 1979 as a retirement home for physicist Bob Rawlins and his wife Marjorie, a musician, who both loved the midcentury style, but were looking for something a bit more interesting when they moved out West, the one-of-a-kind Rawlins House is now referred to fondly as the “treasure of Balboa Island”.

Due to its whimsical design, often described as looking like an open-mouthed shark or whale, it’s also called “Jaws” by neighbors.

John Lautner was their architect of choice for many reasons. He had studied with the renowned world-famous midcentury modern visionary architect Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1930s, but more importantly, the Rawlins liked his specific architectural style, especially his Googie designs.

Googie style is kind of a mash-up of classical midcentury modern style and futurism inspired by the Atomic Age and the Space Age. The Rawlins house meshes both design styles with its bold use of glass and wood, its curvaceous exterior aesthetic, the spare, sleek minimalistic lines, the open concept, and its celebration of indoor/outdoor living.

The Rawlins House is considered one of Lautner’s most memorable urban designs by architectural critics. Located on South Bay Front in Newport Beach Harbor, the modernistic domed residence, sporting notable architectural features like a stunning copper balcony and roof, is the perfect retreat for entertaining friends and celebrating the sunset beach-side over dinner and drinks or welcoming overnight guests.

John Lautner’s House was privately owned by the original owners until 2010. Since 2014 it has been listed for sale by real estate agents in the Beverly Hills and Orange County areas. Originally listed at $5,395 million, the water’s edge residence has been reduced multiple times over the years.

It was eventually purchased in 2017 for $3.772. New homeowner, Michael LaFetra, had been eyeing the property for years. LaFetra is a preservationist and architecture restorer as well as a movie producer of horror films such as Stag Night and Night train.

Norfolk has a unique woodland environment around the margins of a massive river basin consisting of the Ant, Bure, Thurne, Yare, Chet and Waveney as well as the Broads. These woods are created from the transition between reed beds to low scrub, high scrub to wet woodlands and finally if allowed to mixed deciduous forest. The main species of Carr Woodland are Alder, Birch and Sallow with a lower tier of Guilder Rose, Dog Rose and Buckthorn with a bottom tier of moss, ferns, lichens and liverworts. The woods are an invaluable habitat for invertebrates, birds small mammals, amphibians and reptiles and breeding areas for fish and act as a sponge to reduce flooding from wash off slowing the flow of water into the rivers and broads. Erie places but if you sit for long enough you will see tree creepers, tits and gold crests dancing through the trees, deer still and silent and owls sitting in the roosting branches at this time of the year.

A unique place to visit

Coughton Court has been the home of the Throckmorton family since 1409. It holds a unique place in English history with its close connections to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

So much to see

Behind the Tudor gatehouse house you will find the courtyard with its fine Elizabethan half-timbering, where a knot garden leads to lawns and fine vistas of the Warwickshire countryside.

So much to do

The house stands in 25 acres of grounds containing some of the most breathtaking gardens in the country. It was Clare McLaren-Throckmorton's intention to create a garden that complements the beautiful house, and to give it the setting it deserves. She also wanted to create a wide variety of gardens: formal and informal, traditional and innovative. Created over the last 15 years, the gardens are now mature and varied and are solely managed by the Throckmorton family.

You know what I love in a car's design?

Functionality, subtle design cues, 2 doors instead of 4, and above all: uniqueness.

The Renault Avantime is all of those. It has lots of interior room, no gaudy bodywork, 2 doors, and it looks like nothing else.

Ever get the feeling your'e being watched?

You will in the Renault Avantime, because no other car has quite the visual impact of the the French firm's coupe-cabriolet-MPV. With striking, futuristic looks that even earned it an appearance in the distopian film Children of Men, the Avantime deserves to be remembered.

The R&D and production of the Renault Avantime was made by Matra, a French manufacturer which partnered with Renault, and represented the first 2-door MPV coupe ever produced. The Avantime is also one of a few concept cars produced by a volume manufacturer that has gone straight into production within two years of first being seen by the general public, and redefined luxury travel and passenger safety at the time. The first concept "Coupéspace" was unveiled in 1999 at the Geneva Auto Show and the production started 2001. In terms of engines, the Avantime could be found in three engine configurations, ranging between 2.0- and 3.0-liter, developing up to 210 horsepower.

The two-tone bodywork (created through the use of aluminium for the upper panels) brings a special style to the Renault Avantime. The vehicle was super-luxurious back in 2001-2003. The Avantime combines comfort, style and performance wrapped in a distinctive, innovative, attention-grabbing body, with design project manager Thierry Metroz admitting at the time he “wanted someone walking around the car to be continually astonished”.

The combination of performance and driving enjoyment, the luxury of interior space and comfort, heightened by the panoramic glass roof and four windows which could all be lowered at the touch of a button put the Renault Avantime at the top of the wish list of anyone seeking to stand out from the crowd, see and be seen, in style and in comfort.

Unfortunately production only lasted 18 months due to Matra being unable to find a replacement model for Espace III production that was coming to a close leaving them with too much excess capacity. This has made the Avantime, something of a rarity on the roads. The global production reached 8,557 units - compared to 12,920 Citroën SM - by 2003, the same year when the French parent company Renault decided to discontinue the model. This helped to build a cult following among current and past owners and enthusiasts of this iconic design classic.

The appearance of the Renault Avantime - designed by Patrick le Quément - is still innovative to the absence of central body pillars, two-stage parallel opening doors, and the large single opening glass roof panel.

The Avantime is an extraordinary car: no doubt about that!
