The Forks' unique history continues into its bustling market. Originally two adjacent stables for competing rail companies circa 1900, the horse stalls were joined together by a courtyard and bridges to create The Forks Market, Winnipeg's incomparable shopping experience.
The Forks Market offers a multitude of shops to browse for a wide variety of specialty items and souvenirs. Downstairs, The Market features an irrresistible fresh food emporium with everything from gourmet cheeses, to meaets, organic backed goods and wine. In the upstairs Hayloft, shoppers will find items ranging from cigars and aromatheraphy products to crafts and artworks from 300 local and Canadian artisans.
One of the unique things we found in our travels through the southwest was the Center of the World in Felicity, California near the border of Arizona. The town, with a population of 2, includes the Church on the Hill constructed on a 35 foot manmade hill, a 21 foot glass and granite pyramid built over the bronze marker of the Center of the World and dozens of polished granite panels containing the history of humanity as written by the founder, Jacques-Andre Istel. Admission is $10.00. The hill is enclosed by a fence.

The Breakaways are a striking & unique example of arid scenery. From the flat - topped mesas to the stony gibber desert, remnants of millions of years provide a wealth of geological interests and breathtaking views. Looking out over the breakaways it is hard to believe that over 70 million years ago, a vast inland sea covered the area. The region is rich in Aboriginal and European history and is home to an array of native fauna and flora, which have successfully adapted to one of the world's harshest environments. Definitely one of Outback South Australia's best-kept secrets.
This is sunset time looking east. I could not capture any decent cloud. There were some more defined clouds in the distance the rest were all a sort of haze.

The unique, surreal, stunning, incredible landscape of Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon on the south coast of Iceland. Part of the locations charm is every day is unique, and this was a fun late in the day shoot with huge blocks and big waves. Froze my feet and nearly got doused several times but way too much fun not to dash between the water and ice.
Looks best on black.
Comments as always appreciated, but please no flashy award codes.
Seen while out walking. I'm not very good at plant ID at any time much less this one, but it did strike my attention while walking by.

In the middle of the Volcanic Eifel lies the waterfall Dreimühlen - it is considered the most beautiful in the entire region.
It was created about 100 years ago during the construction of the railroad tracks. Since then, it has been growing every year due to lime deposits.
A few years back I had a unique photographic experience. I came across 2 foxes that were running along the side of the road. They did not seem to mind my presence, and so I walked with them for about an hour, before they decided to split up and wonder down different trails in the park. I went with one of the foxes, and we walked down and back along a marsh trail for over an hour, he hunting for voles while I tried to capture the moments. During that hour he caught 14 voles (hungry fellow) and provided me with over 500 pictures during the 2 1/2 hours I spent in total with the two of them...
To see more pics from this day and other fox photos please check out my album entitled "foxes".
TIA for all comments.
An extremely unique and distinctive design by Giovanni Michelotti, built by Vignale and based on the famous Fiat 8V. Michelotti demonstrated his creativity and inventiveness with this Démon Rouge (red devil) at the Turin motor show in 1953.
The semi-circular, vertical rear window under the extended roofline is one of the most striking details. It was an aerodynamic trick intended to keep the rear window clean and dry during heavy rainfall. Something similar would later be applied to the Ford Anglia and the Citroën Ami. The roof itself is largely made of Plexiglas, to give the impression of an open car. The door handles are ingeniously incorporated into the rear pillars. There are no bumpers and the headlights are framed by the grille.
In 1955 the design won the first prize in the ‘Coppa Campione d’Italia’ Concours d’Elégance. Nearly fifty years later, in 2004, the car won the ‘Best of Show’ prize at the Concours d’Elégance at palace Het Loo in Apeldoorn.
The Fiat 8V – ‘Otto Vu’ in Italian – is the only eight-cylinder built by Fiat. Between 1952 and 1954 exactly 114 8Vs were built, some with special Ghia and Vignale coachwork.

I decided I wasn't going to do snow today and actually spent the afternoon working on a couple of other ideas, but in the end I couldn't help myself!
All 173 species of Banksia bar one, are uniquely Australian. The genus is a member of the Proteaceae family and was first collected at Sydney in 1770 by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. Fossils found have shown that these incredible plants have been on earth for 59 million years.
Inflorescences on B. ericifolia can grow to 30cm in length. This species is endemic to this area here on the east coast.
This may look like a delicate beauty - but it is in fact rather like touching a wire brush. These plants, (even their inflorescences), are tough as old boots.
Flowering in autumn and winter. Like other banksias, B. ericifolia plays host to a wide variety of pollinators and is a vital source of nectar in autumn, when other flowers become scarce.
Can grow to 6 m.

This was the photo that received the most comments on my photoblog last year and one of my most favorites. I even made a poster out of it. It was taken at the Terminal 1, Pearson Intl. airport in Toronto.
It is a huge water tank with plastic cubes floating inside. very few of them are red and black, all the other ones are white. I am still searching for the meaning of this "art project". :-)
But for now, I think it fits the theme "The heart of flickr" perfectly. Not only it is my most favorited picture posted on flickr, but the colors and the red cube is almost like an explosion of flickr's logo. Not that I would want it explode or anything, but after looking at this shot for almost 2 years, it finally made sense. Can you see it too?
Rosie has some unique companions in her life. In addition to her monkeys, she has a two headed map turtle named Flora and Fauna that she has befriended. She has presented her at summer circus shows a few years, but winters are quiet times at home.

I made this a few years ago and sealed it with Modge Podge, but it has gotten sticky. Good thing I stored it in a tiny bag so it did not ruin anything else. This is one of my more unique doll crafts.

I just love giraffes, they are such unique and beautiful animals!
INFORMATION ON THE GIRAFFE:
The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an African even-toed ungulate mammal, the tallest of all land-living animal species. Males can be 4.8 to 5.5 metres (16 to 18 feet) tall and weigh up to 1,360 kilograms (3,000 pounds). The record-sized bull was 5.87 m (19.2 feet) tall and weighed approximately 2,000 kg (4,400 lbs.). Females are generally slightly shorter and weigh less than the males do. The giraffe is related to deer and cattle, but is placed in a separate family, the Giraffidae, consisting only of the giraffe and its closest relative, the okapi. Its range extends from Chad to South Africa.
Giraffes can inhabit savannas, grasslands, or open woodlands. They prefer areas enriched with Acacia growth. They often drink, and as a result, they can spend long periods of time in dry, arid areas. When searching for more food they will venture into areas with denser foliage.
Giraffes have spots covering their entire bodies, except their underbellies, with each giraffe having a unique pattern of spots. Giraffes have long necks, which they use to browse the leaves of trees. They possess seven vertebrae in the neck (the usual number for a mammal) that are elongated. The vertebrae are separated by highly flexible joints. The base of the neck has spines which project upward and form a hump over the shoulders. They anchor muscles that hold the neck upright.
Giraffes also have slightly elongated forelegs, about 10% longer than their hind legs. The pace of the giraffe is an amble, though when pursued it can run extremely fast. It can not sustain a lengthy chase. Its leg length compels an unusual gait with the left legs moving together followed by right (similar to pacing) at low speed, and the back legs crossing outside the front at high speed. When hunting adult giraffes, lions try to knock the lanky animal off its feet and pull it down. The giraffe defends itself against threats by kicking with great force. A single well-placed kick of an adult giraffe can shatter a lion's skull or break its spine.

In meteorology, a cloud is an aerosol consisting of a visible mass of minute liquid droplets, frozen crystals, or other particles suspended in the atmosphere of a planetary body or similar space. Water or various other chemicals may compose the droplets and crystals. On Earth, clouds are formed as a result of saturation of the air when it is cooled to its dew point, or when it gains sufficient moisture (usually in the form of water vapor) from an adjacent source to raise the dew point to the ambient temperature. They are seen in the Earth's homosphere, which includes the troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere. Nephology is the science of clouds, which is undertaken in the cloud physics branch of meteorology. There are two methods of naming clouds in their respective layers of the homosphere, Latin and common. Genus types in the troposphere, the atmospheric layer closest to Earth's surface, have Latin names due to the universal adoption of Luke Howard's nomenclature that was formally proposed in 1802. It became the basis of a modern international system that divides clouds into five physical forms which can be further divided or classified into altitude levels to derive ten basic genera. The main representative cloud types for each of these forms are stratus, cirrus, stratocumulus, cumulus, and cumulonimbus. Low-level clouds do not have any altitude-related prefixes. However mid-level stratiform and stratocumuliform types are given the prefix alto- while high-level variants of these same two forms carry the prefix cirro-. Genus types with sufficient vertical extent to occupy more than one level do not carry any altitude related prefixes. They are classified formally as low- or mid-level depending on the altitude at which each initially forms, and are also more informally characterized as multi-level or vertical. Most of the ten genera derived by this method of classification can be subdivided into species and further subdivided into varieties. Very low stratiform clouds that extend down to the Earth's surface are given the common names fog and mist, but have no Latin names.
Two things contribute to the moon being visible in daylight. First, it is bright enough that its light penetrates the scattered blue light of the sky. If you're looking at exactly the right spot with a telescope, you can also see the planets Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter in daylight, plus a few of the brightest stars (though few casual observers can actually pull this off). Secondly, the moon must be high enough in the sky to be visible. Because of the Earth's rotation, the moon is above the horizon roughly 12 hours out of every 24. Since those 12 hours almost never coincide with the roughly 12 hours of daylight in every 24 hours, the possible window for observing the moon in daylight averages about 6 hours a day. The moon is visible in daylight nearly every day, the exceptions being close to new moon, when the moon is too close to the sun to be visible, and close to full moon when it is only visible at night. The best times in the month to see the moon in daylight are close to first and last quarter, when the moon is 90 degrees away from the sun in the sky. R_5217
Bryce Canyon National Park
Utah, USA
The scene could only be from Bryce Canyon and it is a photographer's dream when coupled with a wonderful sunrise.
My wife and I arrived the prior afternoon and had hoped to explore the park for a sunrise shoot location; however, there were strong thunderstorms in the area and instead we found a place for to enjoy a beer. It was still pretty dark and cold when we set up the tripod in this location the next morning.
Bryce Canyon is located in the state of Utah and is relatively close to Zion National Park. It was designated a national park during 1928. At 56 square miles, is smaller than many other parks, but is a gem with its countless colorful hoodoos. Its elevation is somewhat high ranging from 6,600 ft to 9,100 feet which causes it to have a cool climate. It was a refreshing mid-50s F the August morning we took this photo.

I have been here before, the station buildings are now a private residence. It is great that Golspie has the railway passing through on a regular basis. Golspie Railway Station is located on the Far North Line. From here you are about a ten minute walk to the main street, Golspie Beach and about three miles from Dunrobin Castle should you fancy a longer walk. Dunrobin Castle has its own unique Railway Station so it is possible to combine the two of them and include a visit to the Castle when it is open for the season.
