A pleasant evening was had - my best friend and her partner came round and I made curry. This'll most likely be our last meal together for a very long time as they're off to live in New Zealand later this month.

The mosaic shows:

Lentil dahl and veg curry, lentil dahl, veg curry and fried onions, chopping onions for masala style veg, frying onions & spices for masala style veg, adding the veg, mint sauce, tomato and onion, spiced pears for dessert, the table, half way through our meal.

Rangoli is a traditional decorative folk art of India. They are decorative designs on floors of living rooms and courtyards during Hindu festivals and are meant as sacred welcoming area for the deities.[1] The ancient symbols have been passed on through the ages, from each generation to the one that followed, thus keeping both the art form and the tradition alive. Rangoli and similar practices are followed in different Indian states; in Tamil Nadu, one has Kolam,[2] Madanae in Rajasthan, Chowkpurna in Northern India, Alpana in Bengal, in Bihar it is called Aripana, and so on. The purpose of Rangoli is decoration and it is thought to bring good luck. Design-depictions may also vary as they reflect traditions, folklore and practices that are unique to each area. It is traditionally done by women. Over the years, tradition has even made room for modern additions, that add some flair to this beautiful art. Generally, this practice is showcased during occasions such as festivals, auspicious observances, celebrations of marriages and other similar milestones and gatherings. Rangoli designs can be as simple as geometric shapes, deity impressions, flower and petal shapes that are appropriate to the given celebrations, but can become very elaborate with many people coming together to work on the designs. The base material is usually dry or wet granulated rice or dry flour, to which Sindoor (vermillion), Haldi (tumeric) and other natural colours can be added. Chemical colours are a modern variation. Other materials that are now used are coloured sand and even flowers and petals as in the case of Flower Rangolis.

You can simply mix #organic Pines Wheat Grass with organic #chocolate syrup and milk (cow, goat, flax, coconut, cashew, almond or soy) or produce a beautiful smoothie like this one, but always buy your green food separately so you can see its color. Otherwise, if you buy your greens already mixed with chocolate you won't know if the chocolate was used to disguise poor quality greens with a bad color.

With Pines' #superfoods, you are guaranteed great color, nutrient density and freshness because for 40 years, we have been growing and harvesting wheat grass correctly outdoors, through often-freezing winter temperatures and harvesting at the special once-a-year jointing stage in the early spring when it is 7 to 10 inches tall. We also provide the freshest possible product because we use amber glass bottles with special metal caps that allow us to remove the oxygen from each bottle. Without oxygen, the devitalization that occurs from oxidation of #wheatgrass in plastic containers or paper packets does not occur. #PinesWheatGrass is also available in convenient and economical tablets. Whether tablets or powder, any Pines' #GreenSuperfood will provide the additional dark green leafy vegetable nutrition that experts say is missing from most diets.

I won a free entry into a Food Network Cooking Class from Eat, Drink, Man and this is most of the stuff that we cooked during the 4 hour "Healthy Choices, Big Flavors" class. It was fun getting to work in the AIA kitchen and the food was tasty. I'd take a class again, but I'd have to make sure it would be more challenging than this one. I could have easily prepared these recipes without any extra help. I -did- find out that I really like quinoa, tumeric, and gremolata... but not together of course. All in all, a fun time!

Excellent if you include cauliflower and plumped raisins (I didn't have any on hand) and top with plain yogurt. Spicy and sweet.

I always like to try making something myself, at least once. This time it's the spice blend garam masala. The hardest part was just collecting the spices, as some of these just aren't commonly available in the town I live.

I based my recipe on the one I found here. I doubled it and used half the cloves, as I'm not a cloves fan.

1 2" Cinnamon Stick (about 1 heaping tsp broken)

2 Bay Leaves, broken

3 tablespoons Green Cardamom Pods

2 teaspoons Fenugreek Seeds

1 tablespoon Whole Cumin Seeds

1 tablespoon Whole Coriander Seeds

1 tablespoon Black Peppercorns

1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon Whole Cloves

1 teaspoon Blade Mace

Preparation Instructions

Break the cinnamon sticks into pieces. Crumble the bay leaves. Heat a heavy frying pan and after 2-3 minutes put in the whole spices. Dry roast over medium heat until the color darkens, stirring or shaking the pan frequently to prevent burning. Burns very easily! Leave to cool, then grind. I used a small coffee grinder that is reserved just for spices.

Apparently stored in a airtight jar this will last 3-4 months. I'm giving some away to friends to be sure it all gets used up by then.

I didn't do this yet, but the recipe said: "you can add 2 teaspoons of ground tumeric after grinding to add a golden color and/or add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon ground ginger to give some heat, or to taste."

CK works with a 35-year old company that provides cooking tools and recipe ideas to health-minded people through food and fellowship.

Avoid #GreenSuperfood blends in plastic containers. Not all wheatgrass is a beautiful dark green color like #PinesWheatGrass. Green #superfood blends with additives such as chocolate or spirulina, use the strong colors of such ingredients to disguise wheatgrass that can be more brown than green. Using Pines #WheatGrass and other single-ingredient products allows you see the color, note the aroma and other characteristics so you can judge the quality of each ingredient you use.

Pines does not produce complicated blends. Pines formulas are very simple, and all Pines ingredients are harvested at the right time and packaged in amber glass bottles with special metal caps. This kind of packaging allow Pines to remove the oxygen. That protects color and nutritional levels. Besides plastic tubs polluting our oceans and land fills, plastic does not protect green food nutrients from oxidation, which devitalizes sensitive #greenfood components.

I have a recipe for some amazing indian Chilli sauce and these are the ingredients before "assembly" the only missing one is tumeric.

To combat the sads last night of being back in my apartment by myself, I decided to set out on a culinary endeavor and try this "life changing" loaf of bread and a delicious dinner of kale/tumeric/chicken/mashed avocado.

Both *actually* turned out pretty decently, and I'm pretty excited about this bread. It's GF *and* vegan and the recipe is really flexible and allows for a fair number of substitutions (pan type, seeds used, sweetener used, etc.) so although I've only eaten a tiny slice, I highly, highly recommend. Is super easy, too!

Ann made these sort of shockingly lovely eggs, dyed with tumeric, red cabbage, and red wine.

Simply-the best bowl of "Mì Quảng" in Chicago.

In Vietnam- it's quite common to find street sellers of this amazing dish.

For me- this is a complete meal in a Bowl.

Protein,a piece of Pork. A Shrimp or Two. A piece of Squid. A Fish Ball.

Even a Scallop.

Rice Noodles- hit w/Tumeric.

A Little Broth- golden and saffron colored-maybe a hint of coconut milk flavor- yet savory and rich.

Green Mint. Green Cilantro. Green Scallions.Red Cabbage.Sprinkle of Crispy Shallots.Sprinkle of Chopped Peanuts.

OMG- So Good.....and- did I mention it's

only US $5.95- for this Big Bowl of YUMMMM!???!

Ya can't beat it.

Chicken Thigh and Rice Biryani with Green Peas, square

Recipe to follow.

1 lb elbow macaroni, cooked

1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped

1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped

4 scallions, sliced thin

½ cup cooked corn

1 cup black beans

2 tablespoons cider vinegar

1 teaspoon hot sauce

1 teaspoon chili powder

1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

1 pinch cayenne pepper

1 cup vegan mayonnaise

1/2 cup barbecue sauce

salt & pepper

EVOO

Sprinkle a little olive oil on cooked pasta to prevent sticking and transfer to large bowl.

Stir in bell peppers, beans, corn, scallions, vinegar, hot sauce, chili powder, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper, and let sit until flavors are absorbed, about 2 minutes.

Stir in vegan mayonnaise and barbecue sauce and refrigerate an hour or so.

BarBeque sauce: In a sauce pan, mix together ½ cup tomato paste with ¼ cup pineapple juice, 2 tsp agave syrup,1tbsp liquid smoke, ½ tsp mustard, and ½ tsp tamarind paste, a dash of turmeric and a squirt of lemon. Stirring often, bring to a boil and then remove from heat.

Exotic flowering spikes of Curcuma - a far eastern plant whose rhizomes are used as a scource of spices such as tumeric.

I had a packet of silken tofu in the fridge that needed to be eaten,

so this morning I made "scrambled tofu". I googled some recipies, and

the *worst* looking one said: soy, tumeric, garlic powder, onion

powder, salt and pepper. Ew, Ew, Ew. What's wrong with using real live

onion and garlic?

So here I have:

1. packet silken tofu (I think 90g)

2. One purple eschallot sliced,

3. Green garlic shoots - about 1 tbs

4. tumeric - 1/2 tsp

5. splash of tamari soy sauce

6. Quinoa, soaked overnight, and then cooked in the morning beforehand

- about a tbs, raw

7. Chia Seeds

8. Bran

9. Psyllium Husk

10: coriander, parsley

Items 6-7 were added at the end, when the tofu had the right amount of

"doneness". I like the coriander and parsley to be cooked a bit, not

just at the end

One of the inner shrines of the Ekambareswara temple and a rare one that is open to non-Hindus.

The central figures are a dancing Shiva, his consort Pavarti and in front, elephant-headed Ganesh.

Welcoming all faiths to experience a part of the religion, the sadhu performed a pooja and prayer for us for health and success including annointing the idols with oil, sandalwood and other items, offering flowers (jasmine), wafting incence and marking of our foreheads with sacred ash and red kumkum (vermillion), made from tumeric and slacked lime.

In India, everything can be sacred and a shrine and this tree is marked auspiciously with turmeric and tikka powders.

A newly discovered drink at my local gluten free vegan bakery....ShambalaBakery...I don't have all the ingredients but it has tumeric, chili, cinnamon, two shots of espresso, and hemp milk and honey. It is a perfect drink for such a cold day to be out and about.

Make a light salad with bold flavors and top with sweet berries for a fantastic first course. The contrast of sweet pecans and tart vinaigrette is a fantastic pairing with peppery arugula and sweet blueberries and raspberries.

Original recipe from here: Laksa

Instead of using fishcakes, I had used fishballs in its place. I had included an extra stalk of lemon grass in the ground spice paste; used factory made coconut cream and had reduced the blachan to half a tablespoon. As the amount of water used to cook the prawns was not stated, I cooked the prawns in some water and discarded the prawn stock. I used 1.7 litres of boiling water in the laksa gravy instead. As to how creamy, or lemak as we said it locally, you want the laksa gravy to be, just adjust this by adding more or reducing the amount of coconut cream to your liking.

Though my family said this home cooked laksa was not bad, somehow I felt a little oomph was missing. May be I will test it out by adding extra dried shrimps; blachan, coriander powder and chilli powder to the remaining gravy.

Laksa ingredients I used:

30 fishballs [homemade]

300g medium prawns

10 tofu puffs

2stalks lemon grass, white stem portion, crushed

4 tbsp oil

2 packets of 200 ml coconut cream

Salt and ajinomoto to taste

1 tbsp sugar

Pepper

500g (1 lb) dried thick rice noodles

300g bean sprouts, scalded

Ground ingredients into a paste:

12 shallots, peeled

15 dried chillies, softened in hot water

3 red chillies

½ tbsp blachan (shrimp paste)

3 tbsp dried shrimp, soaked for a while in water to soften

6 buah keras (candlenuts)

1 thumb size turmeric or 1 tsp turmeric powder

½ tbsp roasted coriander powder

1 stalk lemon grass
