Taken in October 2013 when Noreen and I travelled on the paddle-steamer Waverley down the Thames from London (Tower Pier) to Southend and back. We left about 9am on a cold misty morning, but this cleared to a lovely warm sunny day. The final leg of the return journey was in a rather chilly twilight.
Day 27: We were spared the brunt of the storm. The blizzard stayed to the east, leaving us with about 6 inches of snow -- with drifts up to around 8-10 inches -- instead of the forecasted 18-24 We'll take it.
To get out of the house (not counting the hour I spent shoveling), Casey and I took a walk this afternoon. The fresh snow added a nice touch to this sculpture -- "Tug of War," by Sassoon Yosef -- on the grounds of our city hall. Perhaps my two most favorite things about the municipal complex, which is just down the street from our house, are the various art installations scattered about the grounds and about a dozen sheds like the one in the background here. They're remnants from the U.S. Animal Quarantine Station, built in 1900 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Erie Railroad has a line passing nearby, and there used to be spurs leading to these sheds, where any animals coming into the United States were quarantined. Now they serve as storage sheds, an arts center, the city pound and a senior center.

Grimm got a new tug yesterday and was so excited, she snagged it before the tag even came off it. However, once outside, a cat stuck a paw over the fence and the tug was all but forgotten. Frankly, I'm surprised it didn't drop right out of her mouth.
