The 104 year old steam tug Lyttelton is just about the only bit of historic Lyttelton intact after the earth quake. But it needs a bit of help to keep going in its second century. The Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society is looking for volunteers to keep the tug steaming.
The magic of steam has been with the Port since the 19th century which has seen the Lyttelton village grow, briefly stumble with an earthquake, and now plan for a bright new future.
That the steam tug TSST LYTTELTON has survived the passing of the steam era, with the advent of modern diesel powered vessels, is no coincidence. It has survived because she is, has been and always will be, one of Port Lyttelton’s icons. An icon that remains proud and a talisman to show that Lyttelton will survive whatever may come.
Svitzer Stanford and Svitzer Sky tied up at the tug pontoon as night draws in. Don't let Svitzer Sky's size fool you, both Sky and Shotley (sisters) are more than capable of berthing the biggest vessels we have.
6E54 this dinnertime produced a couple of tugs with 60007 and 60066 passing Stenson on the Kingsbury/ Humber empties
With some spring warmth in the air, 60019 Port of Grimsby & Immingham heads west past Uffington at the head of 6B33, the 11:29 Theale - Robeston empty tanks. This is about the only reliable Saturday daylight freight working on the GWML between Didcot and Swindon at the moment with the demise of most of the steel flows.
This viewpoint makes the most of the pre electrification lineside undergrowth clearance, the tree, which perfectly hides the ugly communications mast behind it, and the train masks the electrification depot around the road bridge.
It was only after standing here for some minutes I realised the field wasn't as dry as it looked; as I slowly started to sink into the crust hardened slurry that had been spread over the grass !!

Ok if I was working at an airport it would be Schiphol.. and if I were to do anything specific it would be driving one of these cool lift tugs (or what ever thay are called)... looks like a futuristic racer here...with it's "salmon filet" rear LOL.
