Through the through truss Tuesday (TTTTT) finds a westbound empty limestone train popping out of the Harpers Ferry tunnel and onto the Shenandoah subdivision branch line toward Winchester. The near ironwork was once the main line before the newer bridge barely visible on the left was completed, easing the curvature of the main. The vertical rock cliff is in Maryland, while I am standing in West Virginia.

This was on the Seaboard Air Line Railroads line to Montgomery, AL now abandoned. Considered in Omaha, GA on GA Highway 39 Spur.

Sadly, this bridge was destroyed in the flood of 2021 and had to be removed.

Captured here is one of the twin Malaga railway harbour bridges, constructed in 1913, during the heyday of Malaga's industrial revolution. The bridge is decommissioned (and restored now). The left part is used to lead a pipeline across the river

CSX B157 stretches itself across the P&LE’s Beaver Bridge as they lug Coke loads out of Steel City. Designed by Albert Lucius, then built 1908, this bridge stands a tall reminder of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie’s legacy.

I enjoy the lines and symmetry in the old wooden trusses inside of some of the old covered bridges. The black and white processing seems to draw my eyes into the photo. This is the covered bridge located in Bridgeton, Indiana.
I've been waiting for my rhododendrons to bloom, and today's calm winds allowed for some focus stacks. I set up the tripod on my front lawn and set the camera for 45-frame stacks of various trusses. That's what a rhododendron flower cluster is called, as I just found out.
The Frank J. Wood Bridge (known locally as The Green Bridge) is a three span, through truss bridge crossing over the Androscoggin River between the towns of Topsham and Brunswick, Maine, on U.S. Route 201. Opened in 1932, the bridge was originally called the Brunswick-Topsham bridge (as was its predecessor) but was officially renamed the Frank J. Wood Bridge, after a local farmer who suggested the location.
The bridge has met requirements to be considered for the National Register of Historic Places, both as a standalone historic site and as a component of the Brunswick Commercial Historic District. Despite its eligibility, the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) has initiated the building of a new bridge that will replace the deteriorating Frank J. Wood Bridge by 2025. [Wikipedia]
There was a considerable amount of money spent led by a group who wanted this bridge repaired and preserved as one of the last of this design. The new design will have sidewalks on both sides among other more modern features.
Just barely visible through the fog is a former mill that has been repurposed and contains the Sea Dog Brewery. It is on the Topsham side of the Androscoggin.

I have taken images of this location before, but today there was a construction crew in the distance, over the river, building pilings for a new bridge, which added new background interest.

The Center Street Bridge is a historic and functional steel bridge located in Cleveland, Ohio, known for its ability to rotate to allow river traffic to pass.
Bridge Type: It is a swing bridge of the Pratt Truss type, meaning it rotates on a central pivot in the middle of the river to open a two-way navigation channel, an essential feature on the Cuyahoga River.
Location and Function: The bridge crosses the Cuyahoga River in The Flats district. When built in 1901, it was crucial for connecting the downtown area with the west bank and facilitating the transport of goods. Today, it remains a vital artery for both road traffic and commercial navigation.
Historical Significance: It is one of the oldest swing bridges still in service in the region and represents Cleveland's industrial heritage and the historical importance of the Cuyahoga River to Lake Erie commerce and industry.
Design: Although the superstructure has been modified over time, the base and the swinging mechanism remain.
Looking through my archives the other day, I came across this image which I had never published. This was taken back in February of 2016 as I chased the Wheeling on Valentine's Day. Not sure why I never shared it at the time, but sometimes we need some distance from our past photos to truly appreciate them.
The corrugated decking above is attached to the bottom of the Route 70 bridge at Speers which was undergoing restoration work. It nicely framed the P&WV Speers Railroad Bridge and its great K truss design.
Trusses - I am always intrigued by the trusses inside covered bridges. I find the symmetry and all the lines to be visually interesting. Processing it in black and white helps to accentuate these lines by removing the distraction of color. These are the trusses in the covered bridge that crosses the Sangamon River at Lake of the Woods in Mahomet, Illinois.

Norfolk Southern train 211 made a very early appearance on the Lurgan Branch this morning, beating the sun to the old Reading Railroad twin-through-truss bridges over the Yellow Breeches Creek. A Union Pacific SD70ACe is leading the priority intermodal train west down the branch to Hagerstown and on to Atlanta.
Another one for my bridge addiction. The Benicia - Martinez Bridge along the Interstate 680 corridor.
DSVN D19E 922 leads a Hanoi bound service across the Long Bien bridge across the Red River in Hanoi. The bridge was build in 1902 by French firm Dayde & Pille and despite repeated attacks by American bombers still stands today. Between the hasty repairs and 120+ years old daily use, the bridge is in dire state and plans are underway to renovate it. However, this will likely lead to atleast the temporary, suspension of rail traffic....
