IC 1396 is an open star cluster embedded in a galactic nebula. The entire complex, often called the Elephant's Trunk Nebula, is a diffuse emission nebula. It is located in the constellation Cepheus and is about 2400 light years from Earth.

The nebula is huge, so it takes about 150 years for light to travel through it.

The entire area is crisscrossed by countless globules, dust knots and dark nebulae that barely let any light through. The most dramatic part of this is the Elephant's Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A, VdB142) in the lower part of the image.

Often I wanted to go down the path to the Moselle, which I had discovered some time ago and finally the time had come.

Here, where the Eifel ends and on the other side of the Moselle the Hunsrück begins, I quickly found many exciting photo opportunities, such as this fallen and moss-covered tree trunk in a steep slope.

With the forecast being somewhat 'iffy' I nearly didn't bother to head north but it was well worth it as the sun broke through during the period when most of the freights ran - This does not normally happen!

Lovely shapes and knarred old trunks of the ancient remains of an oak forest.approx 900 years old.

Although described as petrified oaks ,they are not fossilised, the trees are simply dead, possibly due to salt water seeping into the ground from old waterways.

This is part 5 of a 9 part photo essay.

I awoke the next day after a good nights sleep. Aside from the northbound manifest, no trains had passed. It was about 45 minutes before sunrise, but since I would be shooting in the canyons, I was going to relax and enjoy my warm sleeping bag, and plan where I wanted to setup. And then I heard it. Over the splashing waters of the Deschutes River, a distant rumble. No. Not now. Surely I'm imagining this. The sound crescendo'd and the squeal of flanges could be heard. It was train time.

The train was a southbound manifest, and I tore down camp as it passed, jumped in the Jeep, and raced after it. Photographic opportunities were limited, but with the sun rising soon, and running some calculations in my head, it appeared that my absolute favorite shot on the Oregon Trunk was in play. While I was disappointed to not bag a new location, my RAW files from this spot had been lost in the great hard drive crash of 2017, so I was happy to get new versions.

My favorite spot on the entire Oregon Trunk is the SE quadrant of the Trout Creek Bridge near Gateway. It gets fairly early sunlight, and is a great view. I made good time there, scooted up the hill, and waited for the train. The sun had just reached the railheads when I pulled up, but slowly and steadily illuminated the scene.

A faint, distant rumble. Were my ears playing tricks on me? There's a horn, so no! Just 5 minutes later, the lead unit appeared, train snaking through the curves of Trout Creek Canyon, ascending to Madras. The train crossed Trout Creek on a medium steel trestle, emerging from the darkened canyon into glorious morning light. The BNSF had certainly rewarded me with a timely train, and while I was slightly disappointed that I wasn't able to bag a new location, seeing trains slug their way up Trout Creek Canyon never gets old. Returning to the Jeep I caught the train again at Madras and Crooked River. They had met the Bend local at Round Butte, so after Crooked River, I returned to Madras to find them.

The Elephant’s Trunk Nebula is a dense region of dust and gas found within the considerably larger star forming region IC 1396 in the constellation Cepheus. Designated IC 1396A, the elongated globule of dust and gas was named the Elephant’s Trunk because it resembles an elephant’s head and trunk at visible wavelengths, appearing as a dark patch with a bright winding rim. It is located at a distance of 2,400 light years from Earth.

The large and relatively faint emission nebula IC 1396 is more than 100 light years across. The star responsible for its glow is the blue multiple star system HD 206267. The Elephant’s Trunk itself stretches over a region of 20 light years. The dark globule is eroded by the radiation pressure from the central star that illuminates the nebula.

The Flintstones is an animated American television sitcom which ran from 1960 to 1966 on ABC.

The Flintstones is about a working class Stone Age man's life with his family and his next door neighbor and best friend. The first prime time cartoon geared for adults, the show originally aired from 1960 to 1966, on the ABC network. It was also ABC's first series to be televised in color. While the show was originally syndicated by Screen Gems (until 1981, then DFS Program Exchange from, and then Turner Program Services), Warner Bros. Television later acquired the rights (through parent Time Warner's purchase).

The show is set in the town of Bedrock in the Stone Age era. The show is an allegory to American society of the mid-to-late 20th century; in the Flintstones' fantasy version of the prehistoric past, dinosaurs, saber-toothed tigers, woolly mammoths, and other long extinct animals co-exist with barefoot cavemen, who use technology equivalent to that of the 20th century, largely through the use of various animals. The characters drive cars made out of stone or wood and animal skins and powered by foot.

CASTELLANO
