The common marbled carpet (Dysstroma truncata) is a moth of the family Geometridae. It is sometimes placed in the genus Chloroclysta. It is very common throughout the Palearctic region and the Near East.
This is one of the most variable of the geometrids both in size (wingspan 32–39 mm) and colour. The basal and terminal areas of the forewings are marked with fascia separated by a large plain area in the middle, but the colouration of all these areas is confusingly variable from white to black with various grey, brown and reddish tones in between. The hindwings, though, are always pale grey marked with faint fascia. One or two broods are produced each year and the adults can be seen in any month from May to November.[1] The species flies at night and is attracted to light. It is also attracted to nectar-rich flowers and sugary foods which is fairly unusual for the family.

A Common Marbled Carpet Moth taken in my back garden, Chippenham, Wiltshire, UK on the 4th October 2019.
This is my second photo of this fascinating orchid (see my previous post). This time I managed to get a twin spike lying on a leaf. This is a focus stack of four. (The individual flowers are tiny, only about 1/8 inch).
Photographed in the Peter Black Conservatory, Victoria Esplanade, Palmerston North.
They look like satin.

I got a seedling of that red Christmas cactus today. It will arrive next week.
o pasqualina in anticipo ?
Aveva preso una malattia e l'anno scorso ne avevo salvato le parti sane ripiantandole; ed eccola qui in fiore per la prima volta, una bella soddisfazione :)

The Christmas Cacti in various colors that we see everywhere during the holidays are NOT really the true Christmas Cacti. These are clones selected for their colors and growth habits and are given various cultivar names. These commercial varieties in an wide array of spectacular colors have been selected and/or induced by chemical and biological manipulation.
The true or heirloom Christmas Cactus had descended from one of William Buckley's hybrid Schlumbergera russelliana X Schlumbergera truncata plants in the 1840s in the Rollisson Nurseries of England and are commonly known now as Schlumbergera x buckleyi.
There are possibly two, perhaps three slightly different surviving clones (vegetative descendents e.g. by layering or cuttings) of three hybrids of this cross, named
Schlumbergera x buckleyi 'Buckleyi',
Schlumbergera x buckleyi 'Rollissonii'
Schlumbergera x buckleyi 'Snowii'
'Buckleyi' = White tube shading to magenta petals
'Rollissonii' = Flowers magenta in color
'Snowii' = Smaller magenta flowers and stem segments.

Schlumbergera is a genus of 6 known tree-dwelling cacti from Brazil.
These are the tropical rain forest epiphytes, growing on tree branches where, despite the high rainfall, water drains off quickly so that "dry" conditions prevail much of the time.
They are named after the Frenchman, Frédéric Schlumberger, who was the owner of a famous plant collection.
This genus contains the popular Schlumbergera truncata, also known as Thanksgiving Cactus, frequently mislabeled Christmas Cactus, which may flower in white, pink, red or purple.
There is also an Easter Cactus or Whitsun cactus (Hatiora gaertneri) which produces vivid scarlet flowers.
The stems of Schlumbergera resemble leaf-like pads joined one to the other and the flowers appear from areoles at the tips.
The flowers close up at night.
I bought this when we'd just moved into our new house years ago, it loves it here, this is the third 'flowering' in 9 months!
So many buds, so full of promise... again I played with lights, the petals are shiny and silky with light.
Thank you, M, (*_*)
