Up close and personal on my red Christmas Cactus, Schlumbergera truncata, in seasonal bloom.

Schlumbergera truncata, the false Christmas
cactus, is a species of plant in the family
Cactaceae. It is endemic to a small area of the
coastal mountains of south-eastern Brazil
where its natural habitats are subtropical or
tropical moist forests. It is the parent or one of
the parents of the houseplants called
Christmas cactus, Thanksgiving cactus or
zygocactus, among other names.

Parent taxon Christmas cactus
Schlumbergera is a genus of the cactus family with numerous common names — Christmas, Thanksgiving, crab, holiday, Easter or Whitsun cactus. Names seem based on the time of cultivar flowering at different global locations. This example is from the 'truncata' species group of cultivars and flowers in my shaded outdoor Gold Coast barbecue area in June. Whatever, these flowers with some petals folded back look a little like birds in flight.
This is the first flower, more to come. It’s endemic to a small area of coastal mountains of south-eastern Brazil.
Captured from a different perspective and back ground this HDR edit shows why the Sclumbergera truncata hybrids are sometimes called Crab Leg Cactus. Three images at -0.7, 0, +0.7 exposure stops were merged using Lightroom to bring up the darker leaves (overcast daylight in the shade, manual settings shown).
Well known cactus family epiphyte known as Christmas Cactus and Crab Leg Cactus shows the weather is right for blooming under shelter in my Gold Coast hinterland garden.
False Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata)
For my 100 Flowers Project - 2024 Kath has a couple of these in pots on her back deck.
This Schlumbergera truncata, was given to me by my mother in law, she in turn got it from her father in law. She had the plant for about 50 years so it’s a pretty old cactus.
This is only part of the flower, about 5cm wide.
Happy Macro Monday.

Known commonly as 'zygo' or 'zygo cactus' Schlumbergera is a genus of about six species from the Brazilian east coast. I think this one is a cultivar from the 'truncata' species.
At home
I have already posted a couple of shots of this variable species but I particularly liked the markings on this individual.
Sinonimi o altri nomi:

The Cactus with many names. While photographing Kath's Purple Rain Bromeliad yesterday I noticed her Pink Cactus was also flowering.

The Nepenthes pitcher plant has numerous species spread across the tropics. This variety is a cross between truncata (Philippines) and ephippiata (Borneo) and is 60mm in diameter and 320mm in length.I like it because like other pitcher plants it demonstrates the remarkable possibilities of leaf evolution — of form, size, pattern, and colour. To get orientated, the original leaf top surface constitutes the inside of the barrel and the leaf edges are fused down the length of the barrel on the left of the image. Artificial illumination is necessary to capture the complexity of the convolutions and colour. The plant hangs under shelter in my Gold Coast home garden and regularly catches an insect or two to satisfy its carnivorous cravings.
