I love the flaky texture of this tree, it's like it's shedding scales

Toward the end of Section A of the Billy Goat Trail, the trail descends from the rocks along Mather Gorge and comes closer to water level. Littered across the ground are ancient tree trunks worn bare by the currents of the river that brought them there.

I love how atmospheric these trees are. And to think, they've been here for over a hundred years.

Santa Monica National Recreation Area. Close-up of a tree that Paige wanted me to capture for her.

It must have been a miserably wet day. Seems i resorted to just taking a picture out the bedroom window.

At least the wetness helps show up the lovely colours that develop in the tree's trunk. Good timing, taking a picture of the bark at this stage, as the tree sheds all its outer bark in summer, stripping back to pale cream bark that gradually colours up over the year.

Looking out the bedroom window now, i can see the process of the old bark flaking off has already started.

Along the New River there were beautiful boulders and gnarly trees and such.

Lichen altered tree trunk

While out in the woods, we spotted a caterpillar on a tree trunk. Not having a macro lens, or my tripod with me it turned out to be tricky to shoot.

It's January, what more can I say......
