Pedn Vounder beach, Porthcurno, St. Levan, Cornwall. October 27, 2022.

It's often said in this part of the world that if you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes. It was certainly true this day. Having spent the morning wandering around Penzance in grey, windy drizzle, I got back to Porthcurno just as it was beginning to clear, so after a quick bite to eat I went out again in the afternoon in brilliant sunshine, and warm too. Knowing that the tide would still be low, I headed straight for Pedn Vounder, as I was determined to go for a swim...

This is the schooner Mildred, which sunk in Treen Cove, Cornwall, United Kingdom on 8 April 1912.

The three-masted, 350-gross-ton ship was taking a load of Kaolinite (aka "china clay", used in paper-making) from Swansea, Wales to London, England. As she sailed along the Cornish coast, she a hurricane force wind, and then dead calm and thick fog.

The captain was unsure of how close he was to the coast, and no lights could be seen or foghorns heard. He thought he was past Zennor Head.

The next obstacle was Gurnard's Head, which thrust northward for a quarter-mile into the sea.

But the Mildred was much too close to the shore; she was actually deep within Treen Cove. At 12:30 AM on 8 April 1912, she struck a rock. The captain ordered the helm swung about, and she cleared the rock. She immediately hit another rock, almost bow-on. The ship could not move.

With the tide coming in, the Mildred began grinding against the rock. The captain feared she would sink, and ordered the six hands to abandon ship at 1:30 AM.

The poor crew bobbed about in pitch blackness and fog until 6:30 AM, when the rising sun began to burn off the fog. They realized they were west of the town of St Ives, and rowed six miles to get there.

Low tide was at 10 AM. Local farmers were astonished to see the Mildred was almost high and dry. But the tide was coming in, and by mid-day her decks were awash.

The crew returned to the ship in the afternoon to retrieve their personal belongs, but the ship was already breaking up.

All of the parlour furniture is home-made, apart from the Chinese coffee table. The metal picture frames were flea market finds.

The wooden coffee set is an addition. The dresser, table, stove and shelves are all stuck down; this appears to be the original arrangement.

Dolly's dress is home-made from a scrap of a cast-off man's fine cotton shirt and embroidered with old silk sewing thread inherited from my German grandmother-in-law.

The "plates" in the rack over the stove are antique glass buttons from the flea market.

Ped-n-Vounder beach in 1990. At this time this relatively inaccessible beach 1 mile east of Porthcurno was designated a naturist beach. As the tide recedes a calm, warm pool appears protected by a sandbank. In the distance is the Logan's Rock.

Copied from a slide. Original taken on a Zorki 4K with a Jupiter 50/F2.

In the early 1980s there was no sand on this beach hence it was designated a naturist beach. See:

They are somewhat surprised by the meagreness of the parlour - there isn't even space for an extra armchair for a visitor!

My daughter gave me this inlaid wooden box for Christmas 2011. I frequently use the pens & pencils which I keep in it.

Our Daily Challenge group has chosen Made of wood as today's topic.

The Saturday Self-Challenge group has chosen Box of Tricks for today's theme.

Recent wooden German tea-set, probably by Dregeno (Erzgebirge).

The wallpaper seems to me to be very old, and is probably a scrap of human paper. On the edge of a piece of the floor paper the words "MADE IN ITALY" can be seen. This paper may be newer, but I'm not sure.

Difficult to miss when driving past. And I do like a business name painted on the roof.

A stunning place and a personal favourite.
