A few of us River Relief’ers found ourselves in the Meramec Bottoms on February 15th of this year. Even though there was still a little snow on the ground, and temperatures would barely reach above freezing, no way the “211” was backing off or canceling this event. What intrigued me most was the “untouched floodplain” part of the clean-up. Whereas I am usually driving volunteers around on the Big Muddy in a boat, and picking up tons of “single-use” plastic bottles, this was a chance for me to romp around the woods, finding unique and very old treasures for River Relief’s future “Trash Museum”. Finding treasures is actually one of the best things about picking up trash.

This 2-day clean-up turned out to be a huge success, with a one 40 cubic yard dumpster crammed full of trash, plus many plastic and metal 55-gallon drums kept out of the trash dumpster. Now, for the tires, Stream Team 211 filled one dumpster with 27 passenger tires, 12 tractor trailer tires, 255 tires with rims and a whole pile of tires that still need to be loaded up in trailers on Monday. Just incredible!

Picked some weeds and grass in the morning, and the grass stalks caught my eye as they lay in the trash can catching some reflected morning light...

This photo was taken by and is courtesy of professional photographer Thomas Schwab of Moments by Thomas (www.momentsbythomas.net) and they show the 153 volunteers hard at work in Bread and Cheese Creek in the North Point area between Willow Road and North Point Boulevard as they braved a rainy day on September 24, 2011 to help clean up the creek. We can’t begin to think all our wonderful volunteers enough for all the hard word they did today in Bread and Cheese Creek! Despite constant deluges Friday and the threat of more rain today volunteers showed up today early in the morning with smiles on their faces and ready to work! Together we filled one forty yard dumpster with trash and debris, on forty yard dumpster with metal (which included 33 shopping carts), 22 tires, 4 bicycles, 2 computer monitors, 3 car batteries, 1 tiller, and a weather-vane and much more!

Oxnard California

Jill's room had this bag of trash taped to the door with a note claiming the bag was traced back to her room. However, we're pretty sure it wasn't their trash.

Many new additions — there was only one small carrier bag there yesterday.
