Say Hello to Horatio "Grumps" Rainbow, the grumpy knitting needle stopper bear. I wonder why he was so grumpy. He hasn't been on a knitting needle in ages, instead he enjoyed the sunshine on my window sill, because the sun makes his translucent plastic body shine so nicely. And unlike his same-sized brothers (2,5 cm / 0,98 inches from head to toe), the gummi bears, he isn't edible, either, so he won't ever share their, admittedly gruesome, fate. I should admit, though, that I ate a few of his brothers during the photoshoot (tangerine flavour, mmmmmmh, cranberry flavour, yummmm...) which probably was a little insensitive from my end... Grumps also needed considerable patience, since this has been my very first, ahem, professional portrait photoshoot ever. He had to adopt several poses (and wait endlessly while I arranged the lights): "Horatio, let's try another one head-on. You know, Michael Schoeller style" – "Yet anoth...grrrrmm, yes, Silke...", "No wait, maybe you look better from the side, turn slightly to the left, please!" - "Oooh Kaaay, Silke"; "No wait, I think right is better!" – "Are. We. Done. Yet?!?"; "OK, another one head-on, I think the light looks nicer!" – "Silke, we are still friends, aren't we?"... and so on, and so on. Well, Grumps ("It's Horatio, Silke!"), I really hope that we are still friends. You were a great model! Enjoy the sunshine on the window sill :)

Now to the technical: Grumps' body is of a cool-green, soft, translucent, dust-attracting plastic. So I took him to the "bear wash" before the photoshoot to remove all those lints he'd collected during his window sill retirement. Grumps sat on a black, slightly matte lid of a small spice jar. I used three different light sources, a flashlight which I'd put right behind Grumps, and my bigger LED lights, again equipped with my makeshift colour filters, and this time I also used an intensely royal blue glass tealight holder together with the red plastic chocolate box lid. All of it combined, plus a little yellowish light from a shelf across the table, created these nice rainbow colours. This is another single image shot wide open in the fantastic 40 MP High-Res Mode.

Mesh fabric: A material that consists of many thin (nylon) strings, which in turn consist of even thinner, obviously only very loosely twisted together individual strings, which were obviously also only loosely knitted together afterwards, but still make an absolutely tearproof fabric. Amazing, isn't it? This is an extreme close-up of my rainjacket's purple mesh lining. Each of those larger holes is 1 mm / 0,039 inches in diameter. I've used both extension tubes (=26mm) together with my 60mm macro lens. You can see the rainjacket's waterproof membrane (original colour: white) behind the knitted nylon strings; the colours were again achieved by the (partial) use of my red and blue makeshift colour filters and warm light from the living room ceiling lamp. The image is another 40 MP High-res JPG which I've slighty sharpened in Topaz Sharpen AI (method: sharpen), next I moved into ON1 Photo Raw where I'd applied the HDR filter, method "Subtle" at 67% opacity, and tweaked the Color Enhancer filter sliders for the background colours, and as final touch I've removed some colour noise in Topaz DeNoise AI.

Happy Macro Monday, Everyone, stay safe, take care!

Haworthia cymbiformis is a species of the genus Haworthia in the family Asphodelaceae, endemic to the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa.

Plants are small and grow clumps of rosettes of thick, fleshy, light green leaves. As one of the soft green group of Haworthias it is frequently confused with its relatives (e.g. Haworthia cooperi which shares a similar distribution range, as well as Haworthia mucronata and Haworthia marumiana to the west).

A distinctive feature is the soft, "boat-shaped" leaves ("cymbiformis" actually means "boat-shaped"). Its leaves are not recurved like the "retuse" Haworthias (e.g. Haworthia mirabilis or Haworthia retusa).

Another feature is that the leaves usually have transparent streaks around their tips. In the wild, the sun is very bright, and the plant grows mostly buried by sand with only these transparent tips above the ground.

Haworthia cooperi diamonds are nothing more than their transparent tipped leaves. This characteristic of the plant is much appreciated for its beauty, and it becomes clearer in contact with light.

Its leaves start green from the root and start to dissolve in small threads, and on top of the leaf, a crystalline "jewel" is sustained, which looks like a drop of water protected by a light and thin film. In its natural habitat, it is all covered by the earth, leaving only its diamonds out, as it only needs them for the photosynthesis process.

The morphology of Haworthia cooperi is very interesting, as I mentioned earlier, the process of photosynthesis is done through its diamonds. It has a small stature and a short trunk, its stem is barely visible, as the leaves are all stuck to it like a bouquet. Its leaves are predominantly green, but there can be variations.

Depending on the time of year, the leaves may turn reddish or brown. The growth form of Haworthia does not work for the vertical, but for the horizontal, because its leaves do not get bigger nor its trunk taller, what happens is the birth of new leaves, which make the bouquet become more and more full and expand sideways.

Take a close up, note as soon as the beak strike the surfece of the tree, the eyes is protected by the "nictitating membrane"

The nictitating membrane is a transparent or translucent third eyelid present in some animals that can be drawn across the eye for protection and to moisten it while maintaining vision. The term comes from the Latin word nictare, meaning "to blink". It is often called a third eyelid or haw, and may be referred to in scientific terminology as the plica semilunaris, membrana nictitans, or palpebra tertia. Unlike the upper and lower eyelids, the nictitating membrane moves horizontally across the eyeball. -source:wikipedia
