The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, locally known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling (India). It is still operated by vintage British-built B Class steam locomotives. Operations between Siliguri and Kurseong have been temporarily suspended since 2010 following a Landslide at Tindharia (view photos of the landslide).

On April 7, 1987, Dad shot O&W SD40-2 9952 (to BCOL 745, to DME 6201) & 3 more leading a northbound unit coal train at Fairy, Georgia.

O&W power, cars and caboose were all owned by Shamrock Coal Company and used to haul coal to power plants in South Carolina and south Georgia. The SD40-2s were built to L&N specs, and crewed by L&N or Clinchfield crews (later SBD crews). The power would eventually be sold to British Columbia Railroad.

Amtrak's Coast Starlight as viewed from the train itself. The train is rounding a horseshoe curve just north of Serrano, California. Amtrak SDP40Fs 551 & 5?? pull a train consisting of old, second-hand cars in the era before the Superliner came into use.

Taken along US Route 27 in SE Indiana.

I wish I knew what was going on here. When we stopped at a rural Indiana farm Co-op. I noticed this locomotive not too far away, but unseen from the highway. I walked over as close as I could get, but it was behind a locked fence. What strikes me as strange is that it has no identifying logos on it and the trucks are painted silver, something I don't remember ever seeing. Also, there was another engine behind it and a set of wheels in the foreground. I concluded that the engines must have been worked on on this siding.

When I got home, I looked at Google Earth and found the siding these engines were on. The aerial view does not reveal any building, shop, cranes or other large tools on the siding or anywhere near. Who was working on it behind the fence and what were they doing? Got me.

Glendale suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. I love the heat waves coming off the engines.

Not a great shot, I know. But if I think I may never see a particular unit again I'd rather have a bad shot than no shot at all. This high-nose SD45 still wears Guilford paint. It was originally built for the Norfolk & Western.

A rockslide outside of Libby, Montana this morning caused a BNSF freight to derail, and has traffic on the Hi-Line at a crawl. While I was in Shelby, Montana today I found a pair of BNSF SD40-2s that normally work as helpers out of Essex idling away in the yard.

Photo shot by my Dad, Jay Thomson, at Gee Creek, TN in April 2008

On April 11, 2008 Dad found Knoxville & Holston River GP9 2391 sitting at Gee Creek, TN with three restored passenger cars. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum leases this unit - which was built as L&N 511 - for use on their "Hook & Eye" line tourist train to Copperhill, TN.

On this day Dad found 2391 sitting with one car from the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, GA, one lettered TVRM and one in L&N blue and lettered for L&N.

Dad talked to a TVRM employee working to get this train ready for the upcoming weekend and the guy told Dad that TVRM will be letting this unit go back to KXHR soon because of the expense. TVRM has another Geep of their own under restoration that will join TVRM (NC&StL) 710 on this run and the new unit will be painted in Southern Railway colors. The guy didn't know if it was a hi-nose geep (we can hope!) or if it would be green or black (I hope green!).
